Evaluating Zotero, Sherpa/Romeo, And Unpaywall In An Institutional Repository Workflow, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis
Evaluating Zotero, Sherpa/Romeo, And Unpaywall In An Institutional Repository Workflow, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis
ETSU Faculty Works
East Tennessee State University developed a workflow to add journal publications to their institutional repository and faculty profiles using three tools: Zotero for entering metadata, SHERPA/RoMEO for checking copyright permissions, and Unpaywall for locating full-text documents. This study evaluates availability and accuracy of the information and documents provided by Zotero, SHERPA/RoMEO, and Unpaywall for journal publications in four disciplines. The tools were less successful with works authored by arts and humanities and education faculty in comparison to works authored by medicine and health sciences and social and behavioral sciences faculty. The findings suggest that publisher practices contributed to the disciplinary …

Local Language, Local Knowledge, And Local Publishing: What Can We Learn From Latin And South America?, Monica Berger
Publications and Research
Scholarly publishing is hegemonic: a handful of international, commercial publishers dominate. Because the system favors English-language authors at well-resourced institutions, many academics and scientists are left out. But what if there was an alternate vision for scholarship that focuses on research in local languages, where research addresses issues of local concern, and open access occurs without fees to authors? In this presentation, we’ll learn more about initiatives in other countries, why bibliodiversity and local research is so important, and more about how local research is supported internationally.
Latin and South America have proven that they can “do it for themselves.” …

Publication And Evaluation Challenges In Games & Interactive Media, Elizabeth L. Lawley
Presentations and other scholarship
Faculty in the fields of games and interactive media face significant challenges in publishing and documenting their scholarly work for evaluation in the tenure and promotion process. These challenges include selecting appropriate publication venues and assigning authorship for works spanning multiple disciplines; archiving and accurately citing collaborative digital projects; and redefining “peer review,” impact, and dissemination in the context of creative digital works. In this paper I describe many of these challenges, and suggest several potential solutions.

Your Ir As The Centerpiece For Scholarly Communications Outreach At Your Institution, Monica Berger
Publications and Research
Getting buy-in and awareness for your institutional repository can be challenging, especially when we have limited time and staff to devote to the IR. Outreach success requires persistence, flexibility, savvy marketing, and a focus on the long view. Before our IR, Academic Works, went live in 2016, my colleagues and I gave talks and workshops on open access and other topics. With Academic Works, our efforts now have focus and coherence. A varied outreach approach has been very helpful. In particular, print marketing has been effective. We designed a poster and other media promoting our tag line “amplify your scholarship …

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group (DC SEUG) 2019
Since the first free research-sharing site, arXiv, appeared in 1991, the push for open access to combat exorbitant subscription models has seen the number of institutional and research repositories jump to over 4,000. However, with each encased in its own architectural edifice, how is robust research synergy being achieved if researchers are consulting these storehouses of knowledge separately rather than as a collective?
Writing in The Atlantic in 1945, Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, Dr. Vannevar Bush, observed that the “publication has been extended far beyond our present ability to make real use of the record.” …

Introduction: Institutional repository managers are continuously looking for new ways to demonstrate the value of their repositories. One way to do this is to create a more inclusive repository that provides reliable information about the research output produced by faculty affiliated with the institution.
Description of Program: This article details two pilot projects that evaluated how their repositories could track faculty research output through the inclusion of metadata-only (no full-text) records. The purpose of each pilot project was to determine the feasibility and provide an assessment of the long-term impact on the repository’s mission statement, staffing, and collection development policies. …

Scholarly Papers and Articles
Change is the only constant in digital collections work. Evolving technologies, resources, and needs require a constant flexibility in not only what work is done, but how and by whom. Over the course of the 2017-2018 academic year, Grand Valley State University Libraries held a series of facilitated conversations to analyze the workflows, organizational structure, and overall support for the management of digital collections and repositories. This article summarizes the facilitation process and highlights areas of opportunity, aspirations, and future directions.

Successful scholarly communications outreach centers on a consistent, flexible, and holistic approach. We provide training and support throughout the lifecycle of scholarly communications. Our work has had a strong, positive impact at our college and our institutional repository is the centerpiece of our work.
The value of one-on-one is critical. We reach out to faculty when receiving a Google Scholar alert for new publications. Encouraging self-depositing allows us to train on using the IR and discuss author’s rights and using the SPARC Addendum. We have taken the approach that educating faculty is our ultimate goal.

Analysis Of Tweets Mentioning Scholarly Works From An Institutional Repository, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis
ETSU Faculty Works
Altmetrics derived from Twitter have potential benefits for institutional repository (IR) stakeholders (faculty, students, administrators, and academic libraries) when metrics aggregators (Altmetric, Plum Analytics) are integrated with IRs. There is limited research on tweets mentioning works in IRs and how the results impact IR stakeholders, specifically libraries. In order to address this gap in the literature, the author conducted a content analysis of tweets tracked by a metrics aggregator (Plum X Metrics) in a Digital Commons IR. The study found that the majority of tweets were neutral in attitude, intended for a general audience, included no hashtags, and were written …

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
Librarians at Kansas State University and Portland State University recognized a need to document and showcase a more complete view of the digital scholarship from their institution’s faculty, staff, and students; giving each library the ability to elevate the academic research and creative output being produced by their community. The proposed expansion of representation would be accomplished through the addition of metadata only (non full text) records in their institutional repositories (IR), the inclusion of which may run counter to the archetype of open access (OA) IR. The need to provide a more comprehensive view of scholarly activity has been …

Making The Most Of Student Workers: Creative Approaches To Staffing, Kathleen Spring
Faculty & Staff Presentations
When considering and launching an institutional repository, staffing is often the first question on people’s minds. Many libraries are eager to embark on this project but are anxious they’ll need to hire someone to take the wheel. The good news is many institutions have come up with creative staffing solutions that ensure repository growth and development with far less than 1 FTE. In this presentation, Kathleen Spring shares how she manages Linfield College's institutional repository with the vital contributions of student workers. She discusses some of the carefully designed workflows that meet Linfield’s repository needs and talks about how other …

INTRODUCTION The popularity of academic social networks like ResearchGate and Academia.edu indicates that scholars want to share their work, yet for universities with open access (OA) policies, these sites may be competing with institutional repositories (IRs) for content. This article seeks to reveal researcher practices, attitudes, and motivations around uploading their work to ResearchGate and complying with an institutional OA Policy through a study of faculty at the University of Rhode Island (URI). METHODS We conducted a population study to examine the participation by 558 full-time URI faculty members in the OA Policy and ResearchGate followed by a survey of …
