Media Now: A Historical Review Of A Media Literacy Curriculum, Yonty Friesem, Diane Quaglia Beltran, Ed Crane

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The Elizabeth Thoman Archive at the Harrington School of Communication and Media, University of Rhode Island, has the last complete kit of one of the milestones in the early chronology of media literacy, the 1972 Media Now curriculum. This curriculum was the first of its kind, using self-contained lesson modules that were part of a larger series of kits, text references, and accompanying workbook. Its self-directed learning model gave students the opportunity to learn about the media, by doing, responding to, and reflecting on core concepts of media production. Using physical artifacts from the Media Now kit, historical documents, promotional …

Native American Empowerment Through Digital Repatriation, Michelle L. Fitch Dec 2013

Native American Empowerment Through Digital Repatriation, Michelle L. Fitch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Following the Enlightenment, Western adherence to positivist theory influenced practices of Western research and documentation. Prior to the introduction of positivism into Western scholarship, innovations in printing technology, literary advancements, and the development of capitalism encouraged the passing of copyright statutes by nation-states in fifteenth century Europe. The evolution of copyright and positivism in Europe influenced United States copyright and its protection of the author, as well as the practice of archiving and its role in interpreting history. Because Native American cultures practiced orality, they suffered the loss of their traditional knowledge and cultural expressions not protected by copyright. By …

There’S Got To Be Some Kind Of Way Out Of Here: Music, Information, Categorization, And Commodification, Jason R. Neal Oct 2013

There’S Got To Be Some Kind Of Way Out Of Here: Music, Information, Categorization, And Commodification, Jason R. Neal

Jason R. Neal

The increasing ubiquity of digital technologies has facilitated the merging of media content and their metadata within multiple indexing and retrieval systems. In the case of recorded music, individuals can download and store digitized audio (as well as video) content on computers and portable media devices. Conversely, with the emergence of social networking platforms, users can share files, as well as textual content (e.g. comments, reviews, and tags), by uploading them to Websites with music-related content. Ideally, these conditions allow users to connect with others who share similar musical interests, to interact with a greater diversity of music than in …

Search, Share, & Embed: Multimedia Resources For Popular Culture Research, Julie A. Decesare

Julie A DeCesare

The Internet has provided a wealth of multimedia and video content to teachers, students, and researchers. It is saturated by user-created materials (YouTube, Vimeo), digitized or born digital special collections by non-profit institutions (ArtBabble, Arkive, Duke AdViews), educational distributors and producers (Learner.org, WGBH), for-fee providers of on-demand streaming media (NetFlix, HuluPlus, Amazon Instant), and library database vendors (Swank Digital, Alexander St. Press) -- and more. Educators are often challenged by searching for and access to digitized feature film content. Copyright is always a consideration, but also just the ability to find the materials in the format they need, can be …

The Enclosure And Alienation Of Academic Publishing: Lessons For The Professoriate, Wilhelm Peekhaus Jan 2012

The Enclosure And Alienation Of Academic Publishing: Lessons For The Professoriate, Wilhelm Peekhaus

Wilhelm Peekhaus

This paper interrogates and situates theoretically from a Marxist perspective various aspects and tensions that inhere in the contemporary academic publishing environment. The focus of the article is on journal publishing. The paper examines both the expanding capitalist control of the academic publishing industry and some of the efforts being made by those seeking to resist and subvert the capitalist model of academic publishing. The paper employs the concepts of primitive accumulation and alienation as a theoretical register for apprehending contemporary erosions of the knowledge commons through the enclosure effects that follow in the wake of capitalist control of academic …

Shamanic Knowledge: The Challenge To Information Science, Jay H. Bernstein Sep 2011

Shamanic Knowledge: The Challenge To Information Science, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

Shamanism, a form of healing involving soul travel and trance found in many traditional societies the world over, has been studied by anthropologists and scholars of religious studies. Shamanic traditions are characterized by specialized, restricted, and esoteric knowledge domains that are encoded and communicated through condensed and mystified symbols and reproduced in ceremonies. Shamanic knowledge is acquired through direct experience of the numinous, usually in the process of overcoming personal affliction. Information science so far has been silent on shamanic knowledge. This is understandable given the latter discipline's focus on formal documentary information systems and advanced information technologies. But in …

The Neoliberal University And Agricultural Biotechnology: Reports From The Field, Wilhelm Peekhaus Jan 2010

The Neoliberal University And Agricultural Biotechnology: Reports From The Field, Wilhelm Peekhaus

Wilhelm Peekhaus

Following in the footsteps of a variety of previous research that elaborates on the current state of affairs in academia, this article sets out the argument that neoliberalism and its corresponding iterations of science and technology and research funding policies in this country have implications for the types of knowledge that can be generated within and communicated without contemporary institutions of higher education. Using agricultural biotechnology as the lens through which to focus analysis, the article outlines a number of empirical examples that illustrate how the free flow of knowledge either critical of or not readily appropriated by capital is …

Monsanto Discovers New Social Media, Wilhelm Peekhaus Jan 2010

Monsanto Discovers New Social Media, Wilhelm Peekhaus

Wilhelm Peekhaus

As a number of critical commentators have pointed out for some years now, the Internet and other information and communication technologies are subject to capture by actors motivated less by calls for openness and democratic communication practices than by control, power, and profit. Employing the concept of “framing,” this paper offers a case study of how one company in particular, Monsanto, recently has engaged in vigorous efforts to develop and implement new communication and public relations strategies employing various forms of new social media. The findings are based on interviews with key communications personnel at Monsanto’s corporate head office in …

Primitive Accumulation And Re-Appropriation Of The Information Commons, Wilhelm Peekhaus Jan 2009

Primitive Accumulation And Re-Appropriation Of The Information Commons, Wilhelm Peekhaus

Wilhelm Peekhaus

This paper suggests that LIS might benefit from critical political economy as a way of theorizing and responding to enclosures of information commons. The autonomist Marxist re-invigoration of ‘primitive accumulation’ offers a register for apprehending contemporary erosions of the commons. Autonomist Marxism also helps conceptualize resistance to enclosures.

Privacy For Sale - Business As Usual In The 21st Century: An Economic And Normative Critique, Wilhelm Peekhaus Jan 2007

Privacy For Sale - Business As Usual In The 21st Century: An Economic And Normative Critique, Wilhelm Peekhaus

Wilhelm Peekhaus

In this paper the author sets out to analyze and critique the commodification of privacy model advanced by Kenneth Laudon. Situating this marketbased model of privacy within the context of the resurgence of neo-classical economics of the last two decades, the author asserts that contemporary economic models, and in particular the intellectual property regime, have difficulty in adequately conceptualizing and treating information. When considering the implications extended by the commodification of privacy model for social and power relationships in society, the author argues that the model gives rise to increased surveillance and greater opportunities for social control and decentering of …
