This report (Transmission Reconnaissance Studies) discusses alternative transmission facilities needed to connect the project with the New England grid, and describes the study area involved. It supplements the Transmission System PI anning Study prepared by the Department of Interior (DOI) (February 1977) and the Assessment of Alternative Power Transmission Corridors prepared by VTN Consolidated (VTN) of Boston Mass., for the Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes project.

An overview of The Dickey-Lincoln Project in northern Aroostook County, Maine is a proposed Federally financed hydro-electric power generating facility. Electric energy generated by the facility would be introduced into the New England Power Pool system through construction of new transmission lines across northern Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Responsibility for investigation and construction rests in the two Federal agencies, i.e. dams and reservoirs in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and transmission lines in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This report is in partial fulfillment of the requirement of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. It is a study of the existing and proposed land use impacts which would likely occur as a result of construction of the Dickey-Lincoln Transmission Line in con-junction with the Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Project at Lincoln School in Northern Maine. This report is organized and follows basically a topical summary as outlined in the National Environmental Policy Act.

This report is an account of research progress on rock glaciers of Afghanistan, Colorado, and Utah. Because of the preliminary nature of this work, some speculation is present; nevertheless, we think there is evidence for each major, new point expressed. The main thesis of our work is that rock glaciers are polygenetic and appear to be part of a continuum of similar landforms grading morphologically and, presumably, mechanically from one type to another type.

"Finally, on September 29, more than two years after the initial correspondence and subsequent competition, design, debate, public hearings and more public hearings, the proposal for the Kennedy Plaza auto restricted zone (ARZ) was passed by the Providence City Council. This necessary approval cleared the last barrier before the September 30 deadline of the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) so that Providence may be considered for nearly $5 million of federal funds to implement this project."

Mortality data from two populations, Bowling Green and Lexington, Kentucky, were correlated with atmospheric conditions for this region. The mortality data included the cause of death by respiratory disease, age, sex and race. The respiratory diseases considered in this study were emphysema, tuberculosis, pneumonia, asthma, influenza, acute and chronic bronchitis. The atmospheric conditions considered t have an effect on health were temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity and precipitation. Mean temperature, mean barometric pressure, and mean precipitation per month were correlated with the death rate per thousand but proved no significance at the .05 level in either study area. This study deals with the Holocene environmental dynamics experienced by a seasonally wet-dry landscape of tropical Columbia. In light of a high ecological sensitivity, the study area is also analyzed as the resource of man. This is done by intensive study area reconnaissance, mapping, altimeter survey, and radiocarbon dating of fluvial landforms. Also, samples of soil, pasture, and water were collected for later study, and several interviews were completed with local residents.

Many of the facets of fallow deer introduction to the United States have previously received considerable attention. Significant factors concerning naturalization have been studied in part, but no previous attempt has been made to investigate the range of this animal nor to compare the various habitats into which it has been introduced with its native land. This study was undertaken for that purpose. An attempt was made to investigate naturalization on the basis of herd growth in a given environment.
