Suburbocentrics Leave Behind Concerns For City, Chester Smolski
Suburbocentrics Leave Behind Concerns For City, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
"The column written by Jean Slaughter Doty for this page, "Love Suburbia or Leave It Alone," recently was beautiful. Mrs. Doty, author, housewife and mother in a Connecticut suburb, aptly described the problem of groth, both planned but more commonly unplanned, that has taken place in American suburbs and which has too often destroyed the advantages these places initially offered."
A Statistical Analysis Of The Residential Distribution Of Blacks In Nashville, Tennessee, Kenneth Szymanski
A Statistical Analysis Of The Residential Distribution Of Blacks In Nashville, Tennessee, Kenneth Szymanski
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of the study was to explain the temporal variations of the residential distribution of Blacks in Nashville, Tennessee. A stepwise regression model revealed that Black occupancy exhibits positive relationships with substandard units and overcrowded units and an inverse relationship with average monthly rent. While the quality of housing became more equitable in the period of 1950 to 1970, overcrowding increased in severity. During this period of Black population augmentation, residential expansion took place. One of the three areas of ghetto growth was chosen as a study area in which to simulate residential diffusion in the 1960 - 1970 …
The Feasibility Of Annexation: A Cost-Revenue Approach For Bowling Green, Kentucky, Jeanne M. Dibble
The Feasibility Of Annexation: A Cost-Revenue Approach For Bowling Green, Kentucky, Jeanne M. Dibble
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The United States is becoming a country of urban dwellers. Much of this urbanization is occurring outside of the legal city in what is called the urban fringe. Among the solutions advanced to deal with the problems of urban sprawl is the annexation of such areas by the central city. Before annexation can become a reality, its feasibility from a cost-revenue approach must be assessed. This was accomplished by dividing the urban fringe of Bowling Green, Kentucky, into nine study areas and investigating the costs incurred by the city for the provision of services associated with annexation as compared to …
A Quantitative Analysis Of The Spatial Distribution Of Substandard Housing In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Robert Harding
A Quantitative Analysis Of The Spatial Distribution Of Substandard Housing In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Robert Harding
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of the study was to determine the degree and intensity of the factors affecting the spatial distribution of substandard housing in Bowling Green, Kentucky. A stepwise regression model revealed that straightline distance from the CBD, overcrowded units, average number of rooms per dwelling unit, renter occupancy and non-white occupancy accounted for only 37 percent of total explained variation. A filtering process based on blocks exceeding ten percent Black population was utilized to divide the universe. New analyses on Black and White sectors within the city did not increase the coefficient of determination. They did, however, reveal a great …
The Fresh-Water Mussel Industry Of The Lower Tennessee River: Ecology & Future, Randall Grace
The Fresh-Water Mussel Industry Of The Lower Tennessee River: Ecology & Future, Randall Grace
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The fresh-water mussel industry of the Tennessee River is nearing an end. Overharvesting, habitat alterations, and pollution are the major contributors to the depletion of the mussel resource, upon which the shell industry is based. A history of unconcern by shell harvesters and weak conservation enforcement by governmental agencies, has left the major waterways of the United States nearly void of commercial clams. The lower Tennessee River presently supplies the mussel industry with nearly all the important species of mollusks. If this industry is to be maintained in the United States, ways to preserve and propagate the mussel population must …
Logging In The Upper Cumberland River Valley: A Folk Industry, Steven Schulman
Logging In The Upper Cumberland River Valley: A Folk Industry, Steven Schulman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this study is to examine the logging industry found along, the upper Cumberland River from the 1870s to the 1930s. Because the industry was very much a part of the economic lifeblood of the people of the region, the study will focus upon the loggers and raftsmen who worked with the timber. Any attempt to describe the lumber business alone would be futile due to the nature of the industry. It is impossible to separate the logging industry of the Cumberland from the general folk life of the area, because of the involvement of the people in …
Geographical Analysis Of The State-Administered Roads In Kentucky, 1920 To 1970, Sudesh Singla
Geographical Analysis Of The State-Administered Roads In Kentucky, 1920 To 1970, Sudesh Singla
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There are several problems in the study of the growth and analysis of roads and highways. The first purpose of the study is to determine the stages of expansion in the State Highway System of Kentucky with respect to the density and the types of roads in Kentucky. A comparison has been made with other states of the nation with regards to percentage of roads paved and the total road mileage during the same stages.
The second purpose of the study is to determine the structure of growth, locational pattern of roads and major nodal points. The third purpose of …
An Analysis Of Land Values In Bowling Green, Kentucky, James Frymark
An Analysis Of Land Values In Bowling Green, Kentucky, James Frymark
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Hypothesis 1. Land values and distance from the central business district are inversely related.
This hypothesis proved to be true for the city of Bowling Green. Although there was no pronounced peak of land values as found in many of the larger cities, there was found in the central business district the highest land values in the city. This particular theory is applicable to Bowling Green and probably other cities of the same size.
Hypothesis 2. Land values and distance from the nearest shopping center are inversely related.
Because the first attempt at testing this relationship was considered invalid for …
The Banana Regions Of East Africa: The Regional Distribution & Cultural Significance Of A Traditional Food Crop, Henry Randiga
The Banana Regions Of East Africa: The Regional Distribution & Cultural Significance Of A Traditional Food Crop, Henry Randiga
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The study of bananas in East Africa by geographers has been neglected. Some study has been made by agriculturists and anthropologists on a small scale. The anthropologist have concentrated their work more on ethnic groups than on the spatial pattern of the crop as such. In none of the studies has distribution been correlated with the Bantu people in East Africa. For a long time the banana has been a staple food la the region. The present study points out that in spite of the many changes which have occurred the banana continues to serve as the staple food crop …
A Historical Description Of The Areal Distribution Of The Churches Of Warren County, Kentucky, Neilam Adams
A Historical Description Of The Areal Distribution Of The Churches Of Warren County, Kentucky, Neilam Adams
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Religion is a part of man and his culture. We cannot understand the totality of man if we do not understand his religion. The church structure is the visible expression of man's religion.
The purpose of this study is to describe the distribution of churches in Warren County, Kentucky, and to examine the factors that contribute to this areal pattern. In an attempt to further clarify this human-religious expression the following points will be considered: (1) the reasons for denominational change through time; (2) the association of church location and population with corresponding rural -urban shifts; and (3) the style …
