Persistent Low Wages In New Orleans’ Economic Resurgence: Policies For Improving Earnings For The Working Poor, Marla Nelson, Laura Wolf-Powers, Jessica Fisch Aug 2015

Persistent Low Wages In New Orleans’ Economic Resurgence: Policies For Improving Earnings For The Working Poor, Marla Nelson, Laura Wolf-Powers, Jessica Fisch

Marla Nelson

Despite New Orleans’ economic resurgence post-Katrina, many workers remain stuck in low-wage jobs. Nearly 60 percent of jobs in the region fail to pay high enough wages to cover the post-Katrina cost of living. In 40 census tracts in Orleans Parish, 80 percent or more of working residents are employed in low-wage jobs. Among the region’s low-earners, almost half commuted long distances to jobs outside of their home parish for work. This essay lays out specific policies to alleviate working poverty and lift the working poor into the middle class. Clearly, the task of improving outcomes for low-earning workers is …

Considerações Acerca Do Aglomerado Metropolitano De Curitiba Na Perspectiva Da Cidade-Região Global, Alceli Ribeiro Alves

Alves Ribeiro Alves

The aim of this paper is to critically analyse the hypothesis that the Agglomerated Metropolitan area of Curitiba (AMC) represents a spatial scale of analysis characteristic of world or global cities and, therefore, have great economic and political significance on the world stage. Amongst some of these world cities have figured in previous discussions the cities of London, New York and Tokyo, but also Los Angeles and São Paulo. Making use of a theoretical-conceptual repertoire called Global City- Regions, formulated by SCOTT et al. (2001), and a variety of quantitative data retrieved from different databases, the work presented here obtained …

Globalization And Governance: Impact On Environmental Sustainability In Nigeria’S Niger-Delta Region, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D, Olarewaju Oluseyi Ifatimehin Ph.D

Dr. Fanan Ujoh

With the discovery of oil in commercial quantities in 1958 in the Niger-Delta region came intense oil exploration within the region. Consequently, various Multi-National Oil Companies (MNOCs) commenced oil exploitation in the region. Steadily, cases of pollution, resulting from oil spillages, increased as the quantities of oil production increased over time. Almost 50 years of exploration has resulted in widespread environmental degradation in the form of land, surface and ground water pollution. This has affected the region’s livelihood capacity from farming to fishing, which reflects in endemic and systemic poverty among the communities within the region. This study focuses on …

Appraisal Of Social And Health Impact Of A Cement Plant At Host Communities In Yandev, Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D, Frederick Terkuma Ujoh Mr

Dr. Fanan Ujoh

Nigeria has extensive mineral and natural resources hence, developmental projects are being proposed and executed on a daily basis, many of which involve large-scale alteration of human, animal and plant ecosystems. Limestone mining and cement production commenced in 1980 at the study area, Yandev, without an environmental impact assessment to ascertain the extent of impact these activities could bring to bear on the physical and living conditions of the host environment. This study was carried out to appraise the social and health impact that mining of limestone and production of cement has inflicted on the host communities. Descriptive statistics and …

Population Growth And Land Resource Conflicts In Tivland, Nigeria, Fanan Ujoh Ph.D

Dr. Fanan Ujoh

The complex issues of population-resources pressure vis-à-vis communal conflicts in Tivland is the focus of this study. Field interviews and observations were carried out while Census figures for 1953, 1991 and 2006, and Land Use/Land Cover (LU/LC) data of study area for 1987, 1997 and 2007 were used to calculate the Land Consumption Rate (LCR) and Land Absorption Coefficients (LAC). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Post Hoc comparisons using Tukey HSD test were applied. The results reveal that: (i) greatest increase in LCR (0.019) was recorded between 1987 and 1997 while the later period between 1997 and 2007 recorded a …

Structured Transformation And Natural Resources Management In Africa, William G. Moseley Jan 2014

Structured Transformation And Natural Resources Management In Africa, William G. Moseley

William G Moseley

This chapter examines recent trends in African resource-based economies, explores the risks of an economy overly focused on primary production, reviews the theoretical literature on the reasons countries get stuck as peripheral producers, and interrogates past approaches that have been undertaken to pursue economic diversification (failed and successful). In sum, the chapter seeks to answer a few fundamental questions. Given the recent commodity boom, and soaring economic growth rates in many African countries, why should there be cause for concern? How fragile is economic growth based on primary production? Do natural resources intrinsically impede economic diversification? Under what conditions can …

Are Green Cities Nice Places To Live? Examining The Link Between Urban Sustainability And Quality Of Life, David S. Bieri Sep 2013

Are Green Cities Nice Places To Live? Examining The Link Between Urban Sustainability And Quality Of Life, David S. Bieri

David S Bieri

The growing importance of nonmarket assets such as the environment, combined with the unprecedented availability of high-resolution data, has renewed broad interest in quantifying sustainability at different spatial levels. Policy-related decision making requires that potential sustainability measures meet three key requirements; (i) sustainability metrics need to be comprehensive such that they reflect the experience of representative households; (ii) sustainability indices need to be comparable across different geographic scales, and; (iii) measures of sustainability need to be economically meaningful, ideally tying into the larger system of national accounts. However, conventional sustainability indices do not tend to meet these criteria, rendering them …

Symposium Report: Findings From The Research Roundtable On The Economic And Community Impact Of Broadband, Edward Feser, John Horrigan, William Lehr

Edward J Feser

In December 2012, a group of experts spanning disciplines and practice in the field of broadband policy met to discuss how the research community can better serve state and local policymakers and other stakeholders. This group of subject matter experts was convened to examine how best to measure the economic impact of state and national broadband deployment and capacity/adoption building efforts. The impetus for the symposium stemmed from the widespread view that there is a deficit of research, standards, and measurements to adequately inform the widely acknowledged view that broadband Internet is a driver of sustainable economic and community development. …

The Unsustainable Nature Of Ignorance: Measuring Knowledge To Effect Social Change - Measuring Knowledge To Effect Social Change. First Results Of An On-Line Survey Of Aboriginal Knowledge In An Ontario University, Jennifer Massey

Jennifer Massey

Based on research carried out at Queen's University, Ontario, this paper argues that one of the principal problems for Native Education in Canada is the unawareness about Aboriginal people in Canada. Through consultation with Aborigial educators and community members, educators and survey design soecialists, the authors designed an awareness survey and delivered it to over 3000 first-year university students. The results of the survey and a discussion of its impact are presented. The results are provocative as are the workds of these students. They performed poorly on the test, failing it on average by over 22%. They performed best on …

Entrepreneurship Education In The Research-Intensive Entrepreneurial University, Edward Feser Jan 2013

Entrepreneurship Education In The Research-Intensive Entrepreneurial University, Edward Feser

Edward J Feser

Knowledge commercialisation and commodification are important components of universities’ “Third Mission” to contribute to the development of their home regions by strengthening their engagement with the public, private, and third sectors. Entrepreneurship education programmes have tended to develop in parallel to such “entrepreneurial university” initiatives, rather than in intentional alignment with them. This is reflected in the research literature as well, where the analysis of the “entrepreneurial university” and studies of entrepreneurship education have little overlap. This paper examines the evolution of the entrepreneurship education initiative of a single research-intensive institution—the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom—and the ways …

Isserman's Impact: Quasi-Experimental Comparison Group Designs In Regional Research, Edward Feser Jan 2013

Isserman's Impact: Quasi-Experimental Comparison Group Designs In Regional Research, Edward Feser

Edward J Feser

Applications using quasi-experimental comparison group designs in regional science and geography have increased substantially over the last three decades, inspired by the work of Andrew Isserman and colleagues in the 1980s and 1990s, robust literatures on quasi-experimental design in fields like education and psychology, a vast program evaluation literature, observational studies methodology in statistics, and the growing interest in experimental and non-experimental (natural) designs in empirical economics. This paper discusses the state of quasi-experimental comparison group research today, with a primary focus on studies in which regions—Census tracts, counties, cities, metropolitan areas, provinces, or states—are the units of analysis. There …

Rural-Urban Relations In The Context Of Sustainable Development. Case Study: Cuejdiu Valley Basin, Neamt County, Andreea Ghiurcă, Andreea Lămășanu, Florin C. Mihai

Florin C MIHAI

Rural and urban development in sustainable context is a complex process that requires an improvement of the existing situation and a removing of the dysfunctions. Over time, the rural area was not addressed as much as urban area, rural analysis is often fragmentary explained and incomplete argued. The system of values owned by rural area is overshadowed by an economic, social and cultural subordination to the city. The connection that is established is a support for the systems analysis of settlements and is the consequence of the functional differentiation between cities and villages, evidenced by the natural, social and economic …

The Law Of The Sea Convention, The Eastern Mediterranean, And Clinton’S Testimony, Zenonas Tziarras

Zenonas Tziarras

Since the U.S. is still the world’s sole superpower, its participation in international conventions is very important for both itself and the better function and implementation of the various International Legal Frameworks. As such, a possible future ratification of the [Law of the Sea] Convention by the U.S. would have broad politico-legal implications for other states and areas in the world, where the Treaty has not been signed or ratified and maritime disputes are in place. One such region is the Eastern Mediterranean. This paper firstly looks at the development of the Law of the Sea, the contested provisions of …

Η Τουρκική Περιφερειακή Πολιτική Ασφάλειας Σε Νέο Γεωπολιτικό Περιβάλλον, Zenonas Tziarras

Zenonas Tziarras

Productivity Gains And The Limits Of Tropical Ranching In Colombia, 1850-1950, Shawn Van Ausdal Jan 2012

Productivity Gains And The Limits Of Tropical Ranching In Colombia, 1850-1950, Shawn Van Ausdal

Shawn Van Ausdal

Contrary to the common assumption that Colombian ranchers were uninterested or unable to improve their cattle operations before the 1950s, this article provides evidence of slowly rising productivity indices from the mid-nineteenth century. These improvements were based on the diffusion of African grasses, new breeds of cattle, barbed-wire fencing, and better ranch management. However, despite such gains, Colombian ranchers failed to break into the international beef trade; their productivity levels did not rise sufficiently to compete against major exporters such as Argentina. Nonetheless, the gains they made suggest that this failure was not simply rooted in the backward and non-productive …

Turkey's Syria Problem: A Talking Timeline Of Events, Zenonas Tziarras Jan 2012

Turkey's Syria Problem: A Talking Timeline Of Events, Zenonas Tziarras

Zenonas Tziarras

This article analyzes the stages of the Syrian crisis’ escalation and the various Turkish reactions. Each stage of Turkey’s management of the crisis reveals certain features of its foreign policy. By examining its reactions throughout the crisis we can observe the gap between the capabilities and aspirations of Turkish foreign policy. The result is a “talking timeline of events” which shows that the Syrian crisis has been a “reality check” for Turkey.

Findings – There is no single campus that has fully embraced every facet of sustainability, but …

Regional Industrial Structure And Agglomeration Economies: An Analysis Of Productivity In Three Manufacturing Industries, Joshua Drucker, Edward Feser Jan 2012

Regional Industrial Structure And Agglomeration Economies: An Analysis Of Productivity In Three Manufacturing Industries, Joshua Drucker, Edward Feser

Edward J Feser

We investigate whether a more concentrated regional industrial structure – the dominance of a few large firms in a given industry in a region – limits agglomeration economies and ultimately diminishes the economic performance of firms in that industry, especially small ones. In an application to three industries using establishment-level production functions and a combination of confidential and publicly available data sources, we find a consistently negative and substantial direct productivity effect associated with regional industrial structure concentration and only mixed and relatively weak evidence that agglomeration economies are a mediating factor in that effect.

Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette Dec 2011

Daily Stock Market Movement From Oscillating Social Mood Factors, Cari Bourette

Cari Bourette

Since 2006, there has been ongoing research into the correlation of a set of oscillating mood factors and socioeconomic, geopolitical, and natural events with the goal of forecasting increased risks of destabilizing events. While promising results have been forthcoming, it has been difficult to present models that allowed those outside a small circle of specialists to participate. Between July 2007 and June 2010, weekly social mood projections, as published in monthly issues of MoodCompass, were used to develop a model to convert four oscillating mood factors into stock market expectations. This model was modified to generate signals of projected stock …
