Identifying Professional Development Opportunities For Remote Healthcare Interpreters On A Shared Network, Suzanne M. Couture
Identifying Professional Development Opportunities For Remote Healthcare Interpreters On A Shared Network, Suzanne M. Couture
Instructional Design Capstones Collection
Many healthcare organizations are faced with the challenge of complying with an unfunded mandate to provide language services free of charge to individuals with limited English proficiency or those who are deaf or hard of hearing. One method of increasing efficiencies and reducing disparities for these vulnerable populations is to provide access to remote audio/video interpreters on a shared network. The Health Care Interpreter Network (HCIN) is a non-profit organization based in California that comprises more than forty member hospitals and offers service in twenty languages. To support the need for on-going professional development of HCIN’s interpreters, a front-end analysis …

The Psychology Of Performance: A Growing Art, Shaina Hammer
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Somehow, though Chapman University is relatively small, there is a great deal of distance between each of its academic fields; the actors don't know what the music building looks like, the musicians have no idea what the dramatists are up to, and no one has any idea where the dance classes are held. But not only do the students of Chapman University's College of Performing Arts not know one another, they don't understand one another. More than once I have encountered a student with the same self-confidence issue as another. Without a doubt, performance majors have a lot to talk …

Issues In Central Bank Communication, Williams D. Kareem
Bullion
This article examines salient issues in communication which is a key aspect of Central Banking. Although, the value of communication has been hitherto ignored, it has become evident over time that, for a central bank to succeed in achieving its set objectives and mandates, it must put in place effective and efficient mechanisms needed in crafting, and disseminating information about its policies. The ability of the central banks to identify their stakeholders and address their unique communication needs will enable them to earn the trust of their stakeholders and portray them as transparent and accountable entities.
I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends: A Qualitative Study Of Nurse Close Work Friendship And Social Support, Jennifer Ptacek
I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends: A Qualitative Study Of Nurse Close Work Friendship And Social Support, Jennifer Ptacek
Masters Theses
The nursing profession is laden with numerous job, emotional labor, and communication stressors, which come from both patients and healthcare organizations. These frequent and simultaneous pressures can result in nurse burnout and turnover (Tracy, 2009). Socially supportive workplace communication has been identified as a solution to reducing nurse stress, burnout, and turnover (Apker & Ray, 2003), but has not specifically considered social support in nurse work friendships. A mixed qualitative method study was conducted with five nurse best friend pairs, using job observations of participants’ work friendship communication and individual and joint interviews. Two major communication themes emerged from the …
Consumer Perceptions Of A Brand's Social Media Marketing, Taylor Michelle Smith
Consumer Perceptions Of A Brand's Social Media Marketing, Taylor Michelle Smith
Masters Theses
This project seeks to inform corporate marketing efforts, as well as add to the growing body of literature on social media marketing. The purpose of this project is to assess consumer perceptions of a brand’s social media marketing. Participants were obtained from the PetSafe® brand Facebook fan page, and a total of 195 respondents completed all measures and were included in the study. The results show that brands must be actively engaging their consumers via social media in order to compete in a competitive marketplace. Engagement can be promoted through entertaining and interactive posts, useful and relevant content, word of …
Effective Interreligious Dialogue, Caleb Fugate
Effective Interreligious Dialogue, Caleb Fugate
Communication Student Scholarship
As the world is becoming more and more globally connected, it is becoming increasingly important for religious people to be able to dialogue effectively with the religious other. What is the most effective way to have interreligious dialogue? Should this dialogue focused on conversion of the religious other to a particular religious view or is dialogue focused on solely building relationships to mutual grow in their knowledge of the divine and its relationship to the world. This question of what is most effective is what will be addressed in this essay by analyzing how invitational rhetoric may be a good …

Dr John Ainley
The International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) studied the extent to which young people have developed computer and information literacy (CIL) to support their capacity to participate in the digital age. ICILS is a response to the increasing use of information and communication technology (ICT) in modern society and the need for citizens to develop relevant skills in order to participate effectively in the digital age. It also addresses the necessity for policymakers and education systems to have a better understanding of the contexts and outcomes of CIL-related education programs in their countries. ICILS is the first crossnational study …

The Role Of Media In Political Communication: The Case Of Kosovo, Gjylije Rexha
The Role Of Media In Political Communication: The Case Of Kosovo, Gjylije Rexha
UBT International Conference
There can be no all-encompassing communication between politics and citizens without the multi-dimensional involvement of the media. As a result of the great influence the media exert, politics makes use of instruments of influence and establishes complex relations with the mass media. In this process, a journalist for politics is an important factor, albeit with the most difficult status.Journalist should establish multilateral relations with several stakeholders simultaneously: with the media, with the community and with the political factors. These are the circumstances that place the journalist at the heart of political communication. In the era of Internet, political communicators have started …

Love And (M)Other (Im)Possibilities, Summer Renee Cunningham
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a performative interrogation of the disagreement and (dis)interest, communication issues, surrounding motherhood in contemporary U.S. culture. Textual analysis of Mary Kelly's Post-Partum Document (PPD) plays a key role in my inquiry. I juxtapose documentation from my lived experiences and academic projects with Kelly's work to build upon the themes and ideas introduced throughout PPD. This project is guided by the concepts love and (im)possibility, and I will argue that, together, they are central to understanding mothering/caregiving as a site of communication inquiry. Love and (im)possibility are inherent to both mothering and communication, but they also are essential …

Expectancy Violation Theory, Caleb Fugate
Expectancy Violation Theory, Caleb Fugate
Communication Student Scholarship
Whether someone is standing too close when conversing or an unexpected kiss because it is someone else’s cultural norm, expectancy violations happen often. Expectancy Violation Theory understands communication as an exchange of content that violates another person’s expectations. This violation is then perceived by the violated person as either good or bad. Understanding the different aspects of this theory will shed light on how people react when their expectations have been violated. To understand this theory this essay will describe Burgoon’s understanding of expectancy and violation, as well as give an example of an expectation violation.
Crime Control, Due Process, & Evidentiary Exclusion: When Exceptions Become The Rule, Elizabeth H. Kaylor
Crime Control, Due Process, & Evidentiary Exclusion: When Exceptions Become The Rule, Elizabeth H. Kaylor
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
This paper uses the dichotomy between Herbert Packer’s (1968) two models of criminal justice advocacy – “crime control” and “due process” – as a rhetorical paradigm for understanding policy debate about the exclusion of relevant evidence at trial. Understanding the opposition between crime control and due process advocates as a rhetorical controversy, in which commonly-used ideographs camouflage dramatically different constructions of the concepts at stake, helps to illuminate the way each side mobilizes public support for their narrative of doing . While both the exclusionary rule (which prohibits the use of illegally-obtained evidence in criminal cases) and the “fruit of …
