This article examines libraries’ responsibility to engage with and support communities of color as they challenge systemic racism, engage in the political process, and exercise their right to free speech. Many libraries have ignored the Black Lives Matter movement, citing the need to maintain neutrality. Despite extensive scholarship questioning the validity of this concept, the framing of library neutrality as nonpartisanship continues. This article examines librarianship’s engagement with, and disengagement from Black communities through the lens of the Black Lives Matter movement. It also explores the implications of education, engagement, and activism for people of color and libraries today. …
The Library As Safe Space, Rachel S. Wexelbaum
The Library As Safe Space, Rachel S. Wexelbaum
Library Faculty Publications
Purpose: This chapter will explain how libraries define safe space through policies, procedures, and professional codes of ethics. The chapter will generate a history of the concept of libraries as safe space, will explain how libraries attempt to create safe spaces in physical and online environments, and will show how library practices both help and harm patrons in need of safe space.
Design/methodology/approach: This chapter provides a review of the literature that illustrates how libraries provide safe space—or not—for their patrons. The author will deconstruct the ALA Code of Ethics and Bill of Rights to demonstrate how libraries remain heteronormative …
Purdue Data Reuse Checklist: An Archival Approach For Data Producers, Carly Dearborn
Purdue Data Reuse Checklist: An Archival Approach For Data Producers, Carly Dearborn
Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials
The Data Reuse Checklist is intended to help a data producer verify their research data is well-described and read for reuse by a third party. It was developed from the perspective of an archivist working with research data and borrows best practices from archival processing and research.
Archivists at Purdue University Libraries have been working with data curation initiatives since the mid-2000s. Early in the Libraries’ work with managing research data, Dean of Libraries James Mullins saw the value of archivists’ knowledge in areas such as raw “data” collection, sensitive or personal information management, and defining user groups. Mullins brought …

Purdue Data Orientation Checklist: An Archival Approach For Data Users, Carly Dearborn
Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials
The Data Orientation Checklist is intended to help a data user navigate an unfamiliar dataset, research material or digital collection. Whether joining a new research lab or downloading data from a public repository, navigating new data can be confusing and frustrating. This checklist was developed from the perspective of an archivist working with research data and borrows best practices from archival processing and research.

"Afterword" In Library Information And Resource Sharing: Transforming Services And Collections, Beth Posner
Publications and Research
The concept, practice, challenges and opportunities of information sharing through libraries is explored. Traditional interlibrary loan lending and borrowing remain essential, as do new ways of sharing information among libraries and information seekers.
More Than A Mausoleum: The Library At The Forefront Of Digital Pedagogy, Dylan Burns
More Than A Mausoleum: The Library At The Forefront Of Digital Pedagogy, Dylan Burns
Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
Some of the more nostalgic set have opined about the “death” of the traditional library and how universities need to “Save the stacks.” Are we losing the traditional library to chase digital trends?
This paper will argue that the incorporation of Digital Humanities into the library is leading to an explosion of new collections adventures. If we take one definition of Digital Humanities as the presentation of humanities research through digital means as Josh Honn suggests ("Never Neutral: Critical Approaches to Digital Tools & Culture in the Humanities" [2013], 6), a shift in focus toward the Digital is providing new …
Creating Spaces For Innovation In The Workplace, Michael Rodriguez
Creating Spaces For Innovation In The Workplace, Michael Rodriguez
Published Works
When libraries create innovative spaces—or spaces for innovation—they are mostly public-facing spaces. They might be learning commons, makerspaces, collaboration rooms, digital production labs, 3D printing stations, innovation studios, kiosks, incubators, and other buzzwords for physical spaces designed to foster creative productivity through technology and collaboration. At the same time, these transformations have the effect of framing library innovation as heavily public-facing and presenting innovation in terms of technology adoption. Spaces that foster intraorganizational, entrepreneurial innovation by library workers are no less essential yet are largely overlooked in the literature and in practice. This chapter draws on studies, concepts, and models …

Stak – Serendipitous Tool For Augmenting Knowledge: A Conceptual Tool For Bridging Digital And Physical Resources, Kim Martin, Brian Greenspan, Anabel Quan-Haase
FIMS Publications
Humanities scholars have long claimed the importance of browsing in the library stacks as part of their research process. The digitization practices of libraries and archives, while meant to assist with preservation and access, make the physical browsing experience impossible. While there have been various attempts to recreate this experience online, none as yet has created a digital tool which users can interact with as they move through the physical material in the library. This paper aims to introduce the concept of the Serendipitous Tool for Augmenting Knowledge (STAK), a geolocative app that allows users to access material complementary to …

This is the introduction to a book that I edited: Library Information and Resource Sharing: Transforming Services and Collections. It presents the thesis that with enough staff and budgetary support, interlibrary loan specialists can work with others in their libraries to provide many innovative services to their library users. Chapters covered include, "Interlibrary Loan Services Today", "From Discovery to Delivery: Providing Access to Library Collections", "Thinking Locally and Sharing Globally: The Impact of Library Policies on Collection Sharing", "Library Collection Building: The Interlocking Functions of ILL, Acquisitions and Collection Development", "Facilitating Information Sharing Through Library Collection Maintenance and Preservation", …
An Examination Of The Convergence Of Theory In Libraries And Archives, Eric Willey
An Examination Of The Convergence Of Theory In Libraries And Archives, Eric Willey
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
While the convergence of libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) has received considerable attention, a literature review indicates that integration has primarily occurred around digitization projects, exhibits, and budgets, while professional identity serves as a barrier to integration of scholarly work. The present study examines to what extent scholarly theory between archives and libraries has converged by surveying citations from 2008-2016 for top-rated library journals in archival journals (and vice-versa), examining Library of Congress Subject Headings of cataloged books and dissertations in OCLC WorldCat from 2008-2016, and examining papers generated by special projects related to convergence in LAMs. Findings indicate that …
Visualizing Space, Your Depository As Place, Aimée C. Quinn
Visualizing Space, Your Depository As Place, Aimée C. Quinn
Library Scholarship
A decade ago, libraries began to reimagine their roles from traditional institutions of knowledge storehouses and repositories to social organisms of growth. With the advent of social media and an ever-increasing demand for information, today’s users request more flexible spaces for a variety of uses including the traditional library, but also for e-government services, information literacy education, social liaisons, gaming, safe and neutral spaces for all kinds of public discourse and a host of other societal projects for all ages. An outstanding study of the library as place was captured a decade ago by John Buschman and Gloria Leckie.[i] …

Beyond The One-Shot: Intensive Workshops As A Platform For Engaging The Library In Digital Humanities., Nicole Kong, Susan Powell
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
This article explores how librarian participation as instructors in week-long intensive classes—a common workshop format in Digital Humanities (DH)—can advance a variety of library objectives, while also uniquely supporting the DH community. Intensive workshops fall between the one-shot session and credit course formats more commonly found in library instruction. Drawing on case studies from Geographic Information Systems (GIS) instruction at DH institutes at the University of California Berkeley and Purdue University, the authors explore the origins of librarian involvement, course topics, pedagogy, and library services. Based on their instruction experiences in the DH summer institutes and student surveys, the authors …

Ownership Of Intellectual Property In The Library Complex, Patrick Roughen
Ownership Of Intellectual Property In The Library Complex, Patrick Roughen
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In order to broadly explore intellectual property in the context of the library complex, this research examines the patents produced by companies that provide goods and services to libraries, as well as patents associated with international libraries. This paper also surveys the trademarks and copyrights held by Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. This research suggests ways in which development of intellectual property by U.S. libraries might evolve in the future, with evidence obtained primarily through the searching of online databases.
