Europe: A Civilization On The Edge, Peter O'Brien Oct 2005

Europe: A Civilization On The Edge, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

Our European culture is one that has staked its all on the universal and the danger menacing it is that of perishing by the universal.
Jean Baudrillard1

Rémi Brague rejects common charges of Eurocentrisim leveled against Western civilization. He prefers to characterize the West as "eccentric," meaning off center. He equates Western civilization with Europe and understands it as that civilization which grew out of the western half of the Roman Empire and with time differentiated itself from Byzantine and Islamic civilizations (themselves successors to the Roman heritage). He labels Europe eccentric because it stands (physically and figuratively) on …

Predicting The Path To Recovery From Hurricane Katrina Through The Lens Of Hurricane Andrew And The Rodney King Riots, Robert Baade, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson Oct 2005

Predicting The Path To Recovery From Hurricane Katrina Through The Lens Of Hurricane Andrew And The Rodney King Riots, Robert Baade, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

Hurricane Katrina caused the greatest damage of any hurricane in American history. We look at the rebuilding effort in New Orleans through the lens of two other disasters that occurred in 1992: Hurricane Andrew in Miami and the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles. The rebuilding effort in New Orleans shares similarities with both events, combining the impact of a hurricane on infrastructure and private businesses, and the prospect of an uneven recovery biased against racial minorities and the economically disadvantaged. Using the experience of the King riots, our concern is that the rebuilding effort will be modest at best …

The Theory Of Planned Behavior: Predicting Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Fitness In African American Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna, Nate Mccaughtry, Donetta Cothran, Joe Dake, Gail Frances Fahoome

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of our study was to evaluate the ability of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to predict African American children’s moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and cardiorespiratory fitness. Children (N = 548, ages 9–12) completed questionnaires assessing the TPB constructs and MVPA and then had their cardiorespiratory fitness assessed with the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) test. Commonly used Structural Equation Modeling fit indices suggested the model was an adequate representation for the relationships within the data. However, results also suggested an extended model which was examined and supported. Tests of direct paths from subjective …

Hegemons Of A Lesser God: The Bank Of France And Monetary Leadership Under The Classical Gold Standard, Giulio M. Gallarotti Oct 2005

Hegemons Of A Lesser God: The Bank Of France And Monetary Leadership Under The Classical Gold Standard, Giulio M. Gallarotti

Giulio M Gallarotti

Conventional theories of international hegemony all agree on the fact that the stabilizing functions of hegemons (i.e., nations which use their power to maintain orderly relations in a given issue-area) are positively correlated with their power. The public goods logic upon which this vision is founded posits that as any potential leader becomes more powerful in a given issue area, it will increasingly see its own welfare as synonymous with order in the entire constellation of relations within the issue area itself, and consequently have an incentive to provide the necessary public goods (i.e., the components of stability) to bring …

Retuning The Harmonization Of Eu Asylum Law: Exploring The Need For An Eu Asylum Appellate Court, Ariel Meyerstein Oct 2005

Retuning The Harmonization Of Eu Asylum Law: Exploring The Need For An Eu Asylum Appellate Court, Ariel Meyerstein

Ariel Meyerstein, JD, PhD

This Comment takes as its starting point the adoption of the first five pieces of harmonized legislation created as part of the EU’s asylum regime overhaul of the early 2000s and proposes constructive solutions to compensate for the inadequate results of the May 2004 negotiations in Brussels. Specifically, it is proposed that an EU-wide asylum appellate court could assist the Member States in completing the work they started by creating a comprehensive harmonization consistent with international law.

A Parallel Reality Construction Of War Among Joloano Muslim Survivors In Sulu, Philippines, Frede G. Moreno, Lea U. Laput

Frede G Moreno

The Mindanao conflict in Southern Philippines is a long-standing controversy that has eluded comprehensive solutions. Despite efforts of the Government of the Philippines (GRP) and the representatives from the peoples of Mindanao in undertaking peace initiatives, “the war:” continues. The establishment of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) as embodied in an organic law provided in the 1986 Philippine Constitution has not seemed to bring about the much-anticipated progress. Even with the so-called “autonomy” already in place to substantiate the clamor of the Muslims for self-rule in the Tripoli Agreement, conflict has escalated signifying unrest among the people. Instead …

Unraveling Of Dynamic Sorting, Ettore Domiano, Hao Li, Wing Suen Oct 2005

Unraveling Of Dynamic Sorting, Ettore Domiano, Hao Li, Wing Suen

hao li

We consider a two-sided, finite-horizon model of search and matching with heterogeneous types and complementarity between types. The quality of the pool of potential matches deteriorates as agents who have found mutually agreeable matches exit the market. With automatic participation of all agents in each round, the market performs a sorting function in that attractive types of agents have multiple chances to meet and match with their peers. However, the sorting function of the market is lost if agents incur an arbitrarily small cost in order to participate in each round. The market unravels as almost all agents rush to …

From Pi To Pie: Moral Narratives Of Noneconomic Migration And Starting Over In The Postindustrial Midwest., Brian A. Hoey

Brian A Hoey

Research introduced here examines the impact of social and structural transitions during the past three decades on middle-class working families in the United States. Through the telling narrative of an especially iconic case of urban-to-rural migration and career change, this article explores the meaning of relocation away from metropolitan areas and corporate careers to growing ex-urban, small-town communities. The author interprets this life-style migration as a manner of personally negotiating tension between experience of material demands in pursuit of a livelihood within the flexible New Economy and prevailing cultural conventions for the good life that shape the moral narratives that …

Supercharging Online Instruction: Amplifying Interactivity Using Interactive Simulation Software, Maryellen Allen, Steven Osler, Matthew Torrence Oct 2005

Supercharging Online Instruction: Amplifying Interactivity Using Interactive Simulation Software, Maryellen Allen, Steven Osler, Matthew Torrence

Matt Torrence

As the trend toward online and distance learning courses in higher education continues, educators and instructional designers continually struggle with efforts to engage and motivate learners located in electronically distributed, asynchronous environments. Studies in the professional literature point to active and problem based learning strategies as possible ways to successfully involve students while raising achievement levels, yet importing such methodologies to the online environment is challenging. Emerging technologies offer hope for the integration of active/problem-based learning with the online instructional environment. One of the most promising of these technologies includes interactive simulation software applications.

In-Country Trials Cambodia: Minehound, Arnold Schoolderman Oct 2005

In-Country Trials Cambodia: Minehound, Arnold Schoolderman

Global CWD Repository

In the framework of the in-country trials of the hand-held dual-sensor system Minehound in Cambodia, tests additional to the main trials are executed. In this document two of these additional tests are reported. Both are blind tests. In the first test the ability of the local deminers to discriminate mine-like targets from indigenous clutter with the help of the Minehound is examined. In the second test the ability of these deminers to discriminate adjacently buried low-metal targets and targets that contain a lot of metal, is investigated. These tests were executed mid August 2005 at the test site that was …

A Review Of Ten Years Assistance To The Mine Action Programme In Mozambique, Gichd Oct 2005

A Review Of Ten Years Assistance To The Mine Action Programme In Mozambique, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Mine action has played a role in Mozambique's achievements over the past decade by opening infrastructure networks, reducing the toll of casualties from landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO), assisting landline survivors, and clearing hazards that posed a danger to lives and a constraint on development for many communities. As is true for most activities in Mozambique, observers with the benefit of hindsight can point to many ways in which mine action organisations and the programme overall could have done better. But in broad terms, the outcomes are positive. Casualties are down dramatically, and travel in the country is basically unimpeded …
