Adjusting Imperfect Data: Overview And Case Studies, Lars Vilhuber
Adjusting Imperfect Data: Overview And Case Studies, Lars Vilhuber
Lars Vilhuber
[Excerpt] In this chapter, instead of using the similarity in the cleaned datasets to investigate economic fundamentals, we focus on the differences in the underlying ‘dirty’ data. We describe two data elements that remain fundamentally different across countries, and the extent to which they differ. We then proceed to document some of the problems that affect longitudinally linked administrative data in general, and we describe some of the solutions analysts and statistical agencies have implemented, and some that they did not implement. In each case, we explain the reasons for and against implementing a particular adjustment, and explore, through a …

Mp3s Are Killing Home Taping: The Rise Of Internet Distribution And Its Challenge To The Major Label Music Monopoly, Kembrew Mcleod
Kembrew McLeod
The phrase “home taping is killing music”—a slogan invented and heavily promoted by major labels to combat the unauthorized duplication of music in the early-1980s—now sounds quaint after the rise of digital distribution. Because the legal arguments surrounding the trading of copyrighted music on file-sharing networks have been extensively debated elsewhere, this article primarily focuses on the way this alternative distribution system poses a very real challenge to major labels. That music monopoly, which has been in place for a century, was able to secure its dominance because it controlled the means of production—something that is no longer the case, …

Health Locus Of Control And Depression In Chronic Kidney Disease: A Dynamic Perspective, Jamie Cvengros, Alan Christensen, William Lawton
Health Locus Of Control And Depression In Chronic Kidney Disease: A Dynamic Perspective, Jamie Cvengros, Alan Christensen, William Lawton
Alan J. Christensen
Participants in the present study were 207 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who completed internal HLOC and depression measures at baseline and at an approximately 16-month follow-up period. Regression results indicated that after controlling for baseline level of depression, baseline internal HLOC was not a significant predictor of depression at follow-up. However, increases in internal HLOC over the 16-month follow-up were predictive of depression at follow-up. Furthermore, this relationship was qualified by an interaction between change in internal HLOC and disease progression. These results suggest that changes in internal HLOC over time may be a particularly important determinant of …

Compensation For Quality Difference In A Search Model Of Money, Yuk-Fai Fong, Balazs Szentes
Compensation For Quality Difference In A Search Model Of Money, Yuk-Fai Fong, Balazs Szentes
Yuk-Fai Fong
We study an economy in which there is always double coincidence of wants, agents have perfect information about qualities of goods, and there are no transaction costs. The hold-up problem arises because efforts invested in improving quality prior to search may not be compensated in the market. Situations in which barter fails to motivate quality improvement are identified. With money, however, the extra effort in quality improvement will be compensated when high-quality good producers trade with agents holding both the low-quality good and money. Injection of money can induce almost all agents to produce the high-quality good.
