Predicting The Effects Of Extrinsic And Intrinsic Job Factors On Overall Job Satisfaction For Generation X And Baby Boomers In A Regional Healthcare Organization, Cheryl J. Curry Nov 2005

Predicting The Effects Of Extrinsic And Intrinsic Job Factors On Overall Job Satisfaction For Generation X And Baby Boomers In A Regional Healthcare Organization, Cheryl J. Curry

Public Management and Policy Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic job factors on overall employee job satisfaction for two generation cohort groups, Baby Boomers and Generation X, in a small rural healthcare organization. Eight job factors were selected for the study, reflecting popular characteristics associated with the two groups. The job factors were classified as intrinsic or extrinsic using Hertzberg’s two-factor theory. Intrinsic factors studied were: work itself, promotion, and recognition. Extrinsic factors studied were: pay, supervision, people, technology, and work-family balance. The Job Descriptive Index (JDI) scale was used to assess employee satisfaction with certain job factors; work itself, promotion, …

Up To No Good? Recent Critics And Critiques Of Ngos, Kim D. Reimann Nov 2005

Up To No Good? Recent Critics And Critiques Of Ngos, Kim D. Reimann

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter examines the various criticisms of NGOs and calls attention to both the validity of these criticisms as well as contradictions and inconsistencies. Critics of NGOs can be found across the political spectrum, ranging from rightists who object to NGOs in principle to leftists who criticize NGOs for their failures to advance a progressive agenda or for deferring to government preferences. Despite their ideological differences and ultimate objectives, however, critics are remarkably similar in terms of many of their main complaints about NGOs. During the course of the 1990s and early 2000s, a clearly defined set of critiques of …

e examined competing feminist discourses regarding women’s involvement/portrayal in the sex work industry. Grounded in feminist theoretical and methodological perspectives, our discussions were guided by the following considerations: (1) What are the competing feminist discourses regarding sex work, and what are the similarities/differences between these discourses? (2) How are these competing discourses deployed in a global context, and what issues/concerns arise within a global consideration of sex work? (3) Is sex work inherently degrading/objectifying to women, or can one allow that it may also be sexually liberating? (4) How might one’s social situatedness (i.e. social class, race/ethnicity, gender, education, non-sex …

The Power Of The Weak State: Domestic Determinants Concerning Africa's Response To U.S. Article 98, Deborah Helen Cotton Aug 2005

The Power Of The Weak State: Domestic Determinants Concerning Africa's Response To U.S. Article 98, Deborah Helen Cotton

Political Science Theses

The literature on the capabilities of weak states to withstand pressure from strong states suggests that more often than not, weaker states tend to give into the stronger power. What are the motivating factors that enable weak states to withstand pressure from strong states? To ensure that the International Criminal Court (ICC) does not gain jurisdiction over its nationals, the United States is currently seeking to sign Bilateral Immunity Agreements (BIAs) with all countries under the rubric of the American Servicemembers' Protection Act. This thesis examines through a comparative case study analysis how a number of African Countries are able …

Fiscal Decentralization And Corruption In The Public Sector, Bayar Tumennasan Aug 2005

Fiscal Decentralization And Corruption In The Public Sector, Bayar Tumennasan

Economics Dissertations

This dissertation explores the relationship between fiscal decentralization and corruption. Theoretically, it is shown that decentralization has a potential to induce public officials to reduce the bribes they charge from entrepreneurs. That would encourage firms to enter the economy. Consistent with the theoretical model, we find empirical evidence that suggests that fiscal decentralization causes public officials to reduce the bribes they charge per firm; thus decentralization lowers the bribery cost to entrepreneurs. Empirical analysis is based on cross country study and panel data study where appropriate. Secondly, not all aspects of fiscal decentralization have an equal impact on corruption. Based …

The Effects Of Environmental Contamination On Commercial And Industrial Property Values: Do Perceptions Matter?, Peter Edward Grigelis Aug 2005

The Effects Of Environmental Contamination On Commercial And Industrial Property Values: Do Perceptions Matter?, Peter Edward Grigelis

Economics Dissertations

The effects of severely contaminated properties (e.g. NPL sites) on residential property values are well documented. However, most contaminated sites are not so severe to warrant placement on the NPL, and little is known about the impacts to commercial and industrial property markets. Furthermore, perceptions may be developed about different types of land-uses as a result of information made public about sites placed on lists. If perceptions matter, then properties with no known contamination may be viewed as undesirable neighbors in a way similar to listed sites. Therefore, property value impacts could be even more substantial as compared to only …

The Relationship Between High Ozone Days And Atmospheric Patterns In Atlanta, Georgia, Edward Eugene Unger Aug 2005

The Relationship Between High Ozone Days And Atmospheric Patterns In Atlanta, Georgia, Edward Eugene Unger

Anthropology Theses

Tropospheric ozone pollution is a world-wide problem, based on studies reported from locations as diverse as India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Germany, Spain, Greece, Canada, and the United States. Ozone is a serious pollutant in the troposphere due to its adverse effects on the health of plants, and on the respiratory systems, eyes, and mucous membranes of humans. Due to the seriousness of the issue, the ozone problem in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area was investigated. A review of the literature revealed a research deficiency, since no environment-to-circulation analysis of the ozone problem in the Atlanta metropolitan area could …

The Process And Meaning Of Sexual Assault Disclosure, Sharon G. Smith Aug 2005

The Process And Meaning Of Sexual Assault Disclosure, Sharon G. Smith

Psychology Dissertations

Disclosure of sexual assault is a complicated process which depends upon a host of factors, such as assault characteristics, the victim’s interpretation, and the level of distress she experiences. Comprehensive theories of adult sexual assault disclosure have not been proposed. Most studies concentrate on a particular aspect of disclosure, such as outcomes of disclosure and reasons for disclosing versus not disclosing. A number of gaps exist in the current literature on adult sexual assault disclosure. These include the conceptualization of disclosure as a discrete or continuous variable; how it may evolve during stages of recovery; the progression of disclosure (e.g., …

A Comparison Of Consumer-Controlled And Traditional Hiv Counseling And Testing: Implications For Screening And Outreach Among Injection Drug Users, Bradford Noyes Bartholow Aug 2005

A Comparison Of Consumer-Controlled And Traditional Hiv Counseling And Testing: Implications For Screening And Outreach Among Injection Drug Users, Bradford Noyes Bartholow

Psychology Dissertations

Recent advances in HIV antiretroviral therapy and the availability of prophylaxis for opportunistic infections, combined with the opportunity to prevent perinatal HIV infection, underscores the value of early diagnosis of HIV infection. HIV antibody home test kits offer individuals the opportunity to collect a blood sample, send it anonymously to a laboratory, and receive counseling and referral over the phone. Home HIV testing may reduce barriers to testing that have precluded individuals from learning their HIV serostatus, and if seropositive, from taking advantage of efficacious therapeutic and preventive regimens. This study employed a randomized-controlled prospective field trial design to determine …

Developing A Modular Hydrogeology Ontology Extending The Sweet Ontologies, Ajay Tripathi Aug 2005

Developing A Modular Hydrogeology Ontology Extending The Sweet Ontologies, Ajay Tripathi

Geosciences Theses

Application of ontologies in the environmental science will allow experts in this field to model their domain knowledge for more efficient exchange and reuse. This thesis presents a modular approach in reengineering existing upper-level ontologies to conceptualize specific domain knowledge. The aim of extending these upper-level ontologies is to tailor and transform the existing conceptual models into new ones designed for the use in a specific domain in the earth sciences. This thesis extends the upper-level Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET)ontologies to develop ontologies for part of the hydrogeology domain. The existing SWEET ontologies are developed by …

The Mediating Role Of Receptive Language In The Relationship Between Verbal Memory And Language Production In Preschool Children, Anjali Vandrie Aug 2005

The Mediating Role Of Receptive Language In The Relationship Between Verbal Memory And Language Production In Preschool Children, Anjali Vandrie

Psychology Theses

Research has demonstrated a close relationship between verbal short-term (STM) and working memory (WM) and receptive language in children (Baddeley, Gathercole, & Papagno, 1998; Ellis & Sinclair, 1996). Few studies have examined the relationship between memory and language production, and these studies focus on STM only. Though correlations have been found between verbal STM and production, the nature of the correlations are unclear. The current study examined the possibility that receptive language mediates the relationship between memory and language production. Children between 3;0 and 5;11 were administered tests assessing receptive vocabulary, receptive grammar, expressive vocabulary, verbal STM, and verbal WM. …

The Effects Of Prenatal Cocaine Exposure On The Mutual Regulation Of Attention In Mother-Infant Dyads, Traci Golbach Aug 2005

The Effects Of Prenatal Cocaine Exposure On The Mutual Regulation Of Attention In Mother-Infant Dyads, Traci Golbach

Psychology Dissertations

Mutual regulation of attention was investigated in a group of prenatally cocaine-exposed and non-exposed mother-infant dyads during a 5-minute videotaped free play session. Mutual regulation was measured using a state-based coding scheme designed to categorize dyadic interactions into three mutually exclusive and exhaustive states: maternal bid, mutual engagement, and non-involved. Results revealed no significant differences between cocaine-exposed and non-exposed dyads in overall amount of mutual engagement displayed. Cocaine-exposed dyads exhibited significantly longer mutual engagement episodes. Mothers in the two groups did not differ in the number or quality of bids for mutual engagement, and infants in both groups were equally …

The Role Of Eye Movements In The Relationship Between Rapid Automatized Naming And Reading Ability, Rebecca Eisenberg Doyle Aug 2005

The Role Of Eye Movements In The Relationship Between Rapid Automatized Naming And Reading Ability, Rebecca Eisenberg Doyle

Psychology Theses

The Rapid Automatized Naming test (RAN) has been shown to be a strong predictor of reading ability (Bowers and Wolf, 1993), however, the nature of this relationship remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the visual scanning and sequential components of the continuous RAN format are similar to those same visual scanning processes required in reading, and whether these processes partially account for the relationship. The sample consisted of 57 undergraduate students (63.2% female). The majority of the sample was either Caucasian (33.3%) or African American (29.8%). The eye movement measures consisted of three short stories …

Recovering A Sense Of Place In The Edge City, Michael Chance Page Aug 2005

Recovering A Sense Of Place In The Edge City, Michael Chance Page

Anthropology Theses

The edge city is often criticized as being a center of placelessness. It is the devaluation and commodification of place in contemporary approaches to urban design and planning that is stifling the prosperity of place identity and subsequently the ability for edge cites to create 'a sense of place'. It is probable that a broadened understanding of the situational context and the role of human experience in place making can suggest alternatives to current practices that reduce place to location. Capturing the essence of place inspires superior strategies for producing place identity and a grasp on the meaning of how …

Geographic Analysis Of Two Suburban Mega Church Congregations In Atlanta: A Distance And Demographic Study, Ulrike Krampe Ingram Aug 2005

Geographic Analysis Of Two Suburban Mega Church Congregations In Atlanta: A Distance And Demographic Study, Ulrike Krampe Ingram

Anthropology Theses

This thesis examines the spatial distribution of church members of two suburban mega churches in Atlanta. The research question concerns why people are choosing to drive thirty minutes or more to attend a mega church. A cost-benefit analysis weighs the costs of going to a distant church against the benefits of attending those churches. Examination focuses on the worship style, as well as the sense of community imparted by the two churches. The author also examines demographic factors such as gender, age, marital status, and socio-economic factors such as race, education, and occupation. The findings of the analysis demonstrate that …

Spatial Precipitation Variability, Snowfall, And Historical Bison Occurrence In The Northwest United States, Heather Anna Williams Aug 2005

Spatial Precipitation Variability, Snowfall, And Historical Bison Occurrence In The Northwest United States, Heather Anna Williams

Anthropology Theses

Throughout the Holocene, bison have always been more abundant east of the Rocky Mountains with considerably fewer bison found west of the Rocky Mountains. It is likely that drought frequency and snowfall characteristics have influenced the pattern of historical bison occurrence across the northwest United States. Using monthly average snow and precipitation data from the past several decades, average April snow water equivalent (SWE) and summertime drought frequency were analyzed at sites across the northwest United States. A climatic stress index (CSI) was developed by combining average SWE and drought frequency for sites, as these are the climate factors that …

The Effect Of Parental Congruence On Preadolescent Problem Behavior In African American Families, Alana K. Miller

Psychology Theses

The current study examined the effects of parenting congruence on child outcome behaviors. Participants were 144 African American families with a child between 9 and 12 years old. Mothers and fathers provided self report on their behavior regarding monitoring, positive parenting, and parental beliefs. Children provided self report regarding child problem behavior, and sexual intentions. Results revealed the more congruent parents were on positive parenting behaviors the more boys thought about sex; however, results for girls were not significant. Additionally, moderation trends suggested when both parents are high on monitoring behaviors girls have thought about sex less, whereas boys think …

The Effect Of The Death Of A Child On Midlife Mental And Physical Health: An Exploration Of Risk And Resilience Factors, Catherine Hilary Rogers Aug 2005

The Effect Of The Death Of A Child On Midlife Mental And Physical Health: An Exploration Of Risk And Resilience Factors, Catherine Hilary Rogers

Psychology Dissertations

The study examined the long-term effects of a death of a child on a variety of parental psychological and physical outcomes, incorporating several methodological and conceptual innovations over previous research. Prior bereavement research typically has focused on functioning within a short time period after the death and often has utilized self-selected samples of grieving parents; thus current models of grief may be inadequate. In contrast, this study broadened the timeframe in which bereavement is studied (average time since death= 20 years), and examined a sample of bereaved parents who were not self-selected. Participants were members of the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study …

Preserving The American Community Newspaper In An Age Of New Media Convergence And Competition, Stephen Michael Wilson

Communication Theses

The intention of this project is to provide broad based and practical advice for American community newspapers. Print editions of papers have experienced stagnation and decline over the past several decades and today face an increasingly complex media environment, and as a result there is the potential for them to be rendered obsolete. Competition with technology based media, or technomedia, is the primary catalyst for this decline. Through a combination of background research and interviews with industry professionals, this project will attempt to develop tools for print newspapers to remain relevant and even profitable in the American media landscape of …

Would You Like Values With That?: The Role Of Chik-Fil-A In Character Education, Deron R. Boyles Jul 2005

Would You Like Values With That?: The Role Of Chik-Fil-A In Character Education, Deron R. Boyles

Educational Policy Studies Faculty Publications

I explore three main lines of inquiry: (1) the specifics of “Core Essentials” as a strategy for teaching character; (2) the role (and ironies) of private businesses influencing public school curricula; and (3) the assumptions inherent in the kind of teaching of character outlined by “Core Essentials.” Girding this inquiry is a concern about the problematic enterprise of teaching character, itself, as if it were an unquestionable domain. Further, the oddly-but-related contexts of childhood obesity findings and Christian influences (both general symbolism and fundamentalist indoctrination) on and in public spheres will be considered via Theodore Brameld’s Ends and Means in …

America's #1 Fan: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Presidential Sports Encomia And The Symbolic Power Of Sports In The Articulation Of Civil Religion In The United States, Michael David Hester

Communication Dissertations

White House ceremonies honoring sports champions -"presidential sports encomia" - have become common events in presidential communication since the Carter Administration. In the last quarter-century, more than one hundred presidential sports encomia have taken place, with US presidents honoring both professional and intercollegiate athletes. Presidential sports encomia not only afford Chief Executives an opportunity to stand alongside champions, creating a "winner-by-association" effect, but also allow them to articulate the importance of sports in American society. Whether addressing civic responsibility, patriotism, or race relations, presidential sports encomia ultimately connect athletic achievement to American ideals. In this way, the symbolic power of …

Cartography, Discourse, And Disease: How Maps Shape Scientific Thought About Disease, Stacey L. Martin May 2005

Cartography, Discourse, And Disease: How Maps Shape Scientific Thought About Disease, Stacey L. Martin

Anthropology Theses

This research examines public health mapping over two time periods, 1944-1954 and 2000-2004 and explores how mapping disease shaped scientific knowledge about disease. During World War II, the Atlas of Diseases was produced by cartographers and geographers well versed in the subjectivity of maps. Today professionals in a variety of disciplines use digital mapping software to produce maps of disease. This research takes a look at how public health maps and mapping of disease have changed over time and discusses the political implications of public health mapping as an aspect of geographic governance.

The objectives of this project included 1) establishing that pollution transport from Atlanta to Stone Mountain occurs, 2) determining the magnitude of ozone concentrations near Stone Mountain and 3) assessing sensitive plant species on …

Gender Images And Power In Magazine Advertisements: The Consciousness Scale Revisited, Lorie N. Bonham May 2005

Gender Images And Power In Magazine Advertisements: The Consciousness Scale Revisited, Lorie N. Bonham

Communication Theses

This study re-evaluates the Consciousness Scale originally formulated by Pingree et al. in 1976. The element of assumed power was added to the Consciousness Scale, which was then used to evaluate 516 magazine advertisements from 1999 to determine if the Consciousness Scale still accurately evaluates sexism in media. A set of advertisements was culled which had contradictory Consciousness Scale and power ratings. The set was evaluated, revealing common themes, which created difficulty in coding these modern images. The study revealed that while the Consciousness Scale can still provide a valuable tool in evaluating media images, the change in the social …

Sense Of Community And Participant Engagement In A Group-Based Parenting Intervention, Catherine Ann Lesesne

Psychology Dissertations

This study examined sense of community (SOC) and participant engagement in the first 12 months of a longitudinal, group-based intervention program for parents, Legacy for ChildrenTM. Previous research in self-help/mutual support groups and alternative living environments for recovering addicts suggested SOC may positively influence engagement in programs and may be an active ingredient to the success of such programs. Literature on SOC has been limited by cross-sectional investigations and lacked a developmental perspective of changes in SOC over time. This study examined the following questions: 1) Does SOC with the parenting program differ between intervention and control participants at 6 …
