Creating A Library Research Prize To Reward And Encourage Information Literacy, Ray Bailey, Helen Beaven Sep 2009

Creating A Library Research Prize To Reward And Encourage Information Literacy, Ray Bailey, Helen Beaven

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Student research papers and other similar projects have traditionally been the “bread and butter” of academic libraries. Even in this digital age, the campus library remains the best place to find appropriate resources for these projects, as well as for getting necessary assistance with the scholarly research process. It is an ongoing challenge for academic libraries to make this fact known to the campus community, and to find novel ways to entice students to utilize the library and all it has to offer, rather than depending on less reliable sources. To encourage our students to perform academic research and writing …

Yes, Virginia, There Are Full-Text Articles In That Bound Periodical!: Helping Students Make Connections About Locating Journal Articles, Camille Mccutcheon, Michael W. Wilson

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The overall theme of the program concerns the methods of instruction librarians are using to teach basic information about the following: journal formats, such as current, bound, microfilm, and electronic; elements of journal citations, such as publication date, volume numbers, and issue numbers; and why it is essential for students to understand this information in order to locate articles in print and electronic formats. The presenters will discuss their experiences and active learning activities used to introduce journal formats, the elements of journal citations, and journal locator tools, such as EBSCO A to Z and SFX, during library instruction sessions. …

Assessing Student Learning, Julie Housknecht, Adrienne Button, Pete Bursi

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Assessment is crucial to knowing if your students are learning the information literacy skills they need. Learn about the experiences of three librarians with evaluating their students’ learning using active learning as a method of assessment, in-class exercises in one-time instruction sessions, and collaborating with classroom faculty to embed information literacy skills into course rubrics. Participants can join in an interactive discussion of assessment to identify assessment methods you can incorporate into your teaching. We will cover developing learning outcomes, class activities, and various assessment approaches.

Citation Generators: Helpmate Or Hindrance In The Information Literacy Classroom?, Shaunna E. Hunter, Lizabeth A. Rand

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In our ever-expanding digital culture, citation generators are becoming increasingly popular sites for student-researcher-writers whose professors require specific, and often, different, citation styles as part of the assignments that they give. Citation generators are, in effect, “workhorses,” performing one of the more tedious aspects required of the researcher-writer; that is, the need for him or her to convey, accurately, and, in fact, precisely, a “record” of his or her information for others to consult. Jane Kessler and Mary K. Van Ullen, library scholars and authors of “Citation Generators: Generating Bibliographies for the Next Generation,” echo this sentiment, partly, pointing out …

Information Seeking Behaviors Of Academically Under-Prepared Community College Students: An Exploratory Study, Glen Phillips Sep 2009

Information Seeking Behaviors Of Academically Under-Prepared Community College Students: An Exploratory Study, Glen Phillips

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Glen Phillips, Georgia Military College As the information age matures, the generation of students currently in college will need excellent skills in information literacy in order to find meaningful employment. This exploratory study focuses on the information literacy needs of academically under-prepared, college students in a small, rural community college in the Southeastern United States. Students were interviewed to learn more about their research habits and their approaches to seeking information related to academic assignments. The researcher explores similarities and differences in the information-seeking behaviors of students in a community college environment with studies of academically better prepared students at …

Collaborating With Faculty: Give Them What They Want Or Give Them What They Need?, Michele Santamaría Sep 2009

Collaborating With Faculty: Give Them What They Want Or Give Them What They Need?, Michele Santamaría

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Michele Santamaría, Delaware County Community Despite greater academic commitment to information literacy, professors frequently request content in an information literacy session without fully understanding the types of skills librarians are trying to teach. Should librarians use the customer service model and teach what professors want or should they teach the information literacy skills which they know students need? This paper will not argue for a simple solution to this question, but instead explore the underlying variables and assumptions influencing this dilemma. As such, this paper will address how both parties are operating under different pedagogical models, with librarians frequently prioritizing …

The Digital Literacy Contest: Evaluating Higher Level Information Literacy Skills, Helga B. Visscher, Karen S. Croneis

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In April 2009 the University of Alabama (UA) Libraries in conjunction with Global Networked-Intelligence Contests (GNIC) sponsored the Digital Literacy Contest (DLC) http://DigitalLiteracyContest.org. DLC is a web-based game in which students compete to find and document answers to questions using only information they find online. Participants have called this competition “awesome” and “lots of fun” while agreeing that “it was fun and frustrating which means I KNOW I learned something.” Join us as we talk about the Digital Literacy Contest, discuss the role of GNIC, report contest results and participant feedback, explain data analysis conclusions, and share recommendations and next …

Embedding With A Purpose, Harold Goss Jr. Sep 2009

Embedding With A Purpose, Harold Goss Jr.

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The Summer of 2008 ended with a decision to more actively participate in the classroom. Some of our objectives were more interaction, relationship building, additional opportunities to expose students to our resources, and strengthen student information literacy. We wanted to do it in such a way as to make it meaningful for the students, helpful for the professors, and useful to us. More interaction was an obvious initial objective to begin with. Library instruction limited to an hour in the Fall and an hour in the Spring is very constraining. It is simply not possible to adequately expose students to …

Active Scholarship: Integrating Research And Writing In The Extensible Classroom, Sara Steger, Robin Waharton, Laura Adams Weaver, Caroline Cason Barratt

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The proliferation of digital media has created a need for college instructors to cultivate in students the skills required to navigate and participate effectively within an information- and communication-rich environment. In addition, digital technologies open up new opportunities for integrating research-intensive instruction specifically designed to incorporate information literacy into the core curriculum. This panel will discuss a pedagogical experiment in which we created an “eXtensible” classroom that integrated a number of institutional resources. Our team worked with the instructor of record for an upper-division course to develop a support model that encouraged students to engage in “active scholarship.” Beginning with …

Throw Away The Map: Blazing New Trails Between Information Literacy And The Disciplines, Carrie Donovan, Brian Winterman Sep 2009

Throw Away The Map: Blazing New Trails Between Information Literacy And The Disciplines, Carrie Donovan, Brian Winterman

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

There have been many approaches to information literacy education at academic institutions, and many positive outcomes from these efforts. Still, there is need for more research, exploration, and professional communication among librarians to identify information literacy teaching methods that have a consistent and long-lasting impact. Librarians at Indiana University-Bloomington embraced the announcement for information literacy in the General Education requirements as an opportunity to evolve the instruction program from an ad-hoc, decentralized program into one that is based on measurable and achievable learning outcomes for every discipline. When we began asking ourselves what it would take to achieve this on …
