Campaign Contributions And Congressional Voting: A Simultaneous Probit-Tobit Model, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Campaign Contributions And Congressional Voting: A Simultaneous Probit-Tobit Model, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Faculty Publications
Full-information maximum likelihood (FIML) estimates of the simultaneous probit-Tobit (SPT) model suggest that effects of campaign contributions on voting are smaller than single equation probit estimates would indicate. The author has generally unable to conclude that contributions have a significant impact on voting decisions, apparently votes are most often decided on the basis of personal ideology or preferences of constituents. These findings differ markedly from earlier results of economists Gary C. Durden and Jonathan J. Silberman, whose single equation models showed a substantial impact of contributions on voting decisions. Despite the lack of significance according to model SPT, it would …
Urbanization And Malnutrition In The Sudan, Richard A. Lobban Jr.
Urbanization And Malnutrition In The Sudan, Richard A. Lobban Jr.
Faculty Publications
The complex and contradictory nature of the process of urbanization is manifest in a wide variety of ways. Inherent within the process are patterns of socio-economic differentiation such as class formation, social stratification and complex division of labor. Topics such as urban health and nutrition demand an anthropological perspective insofar as they are products of human culture and specific relations of production at specific periods. In short, a study of human health would be very limited without an understanding of its anthropological and its epidemiological context. The search for causality and correlation would likewise be frustrated. Remarkably, many inquiries into …
The Role Of Economic Analysis In Public Range Management, B. Delworth Gardner
The Role Of Economic Analysis In Public Range Management, B. Delworth Gardner
Faculty Publications
Economic analysis has a vital, if not indispensable, role to play in the management decisions of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM} if the national welfare is to be served effectively. This rather sweeping conclusion is justified by the nature of the management problems faced by the BLM and by the unique view of the world provided by the field of economics.

Newspaper Errors: Reporters Dispute Most Source Claims, William A. Tillinghast
Newspaper Errors: Reporters Dispute Most Source Claims, William A. Tillinghast
Faculty Publications
The article presents a study related to the newspaper errors. Deep probe of disagreements suggests errors are really differences of opinion between sources and reporters. Research on newspaper accuracy has shown that news sources contend that about half the newspaper articles citing them contain at least one mistake, usually a misquote, omission or distorted emphasis. But, most of the half dozen studies which examined errors in newspapers excluded the reporter from the analysis, concentrating almost entirely on the perceptions of news sources. One study which did look at reporter response found that a reporter's focusing on a particular element of …

Consensus, Community, And Exoticism, John W. Adams
Consensus, Community, And Exoticism, John W. Adams

Anthropological concepts, which have been taken out of context and applied without full understanding, have been misused by historians of colonial North America. Part of the difficulty is due to the normal hazards of incorporating the work of another field in one's own; and part is due to the reluctance of historians to employ monothematic explanations. This latter difficulty has led historians to favor those concepts of anthropology which are not easily measured.

Third Annual Report Of The Independent Evaluation Of The California Master Plan For Special Education, Patricia Craig
Faculty Publications
This is the Third Annual Report on the independent evaluation of the California Master Plan for Special Education, which was mandated in Assembly Bill 1250 and Senate Bill 1870. It contains the findings from follow-up studies in six Master Plan (MP) and four non-Master Plan (NMP) areas during 1979-80. The findings are based on responses of administrators, support personnel, and special education and regular classroom teachers to question naires and to questions asked during interviews conducted by SRI staff mem bers during 1-week visits to each of the 10 sites. The following topics were explored in greater depth during the …

The Law Of Elephants And The Justice Of Monkeys: Two Cases Of Anti-Colonialism In The Sudan, Richard A. Lobban Jr.
The Law Of Elephants And The Justice Of Monkeys: Two Cases Of Anti-Colonialism In The Sudan, Richard A. Lobban Jr.
Faculty Publications
So often the English language literature accepts the "civilizing" mission and "even-handed" governance of the colonial authorities. My research has shown that such judgments are difficult to support. Since this special commemorative issue of Africa Today is celebrating a quarter century of national independence of the Sudan I have sought to use the case study method to reconstruct something of the perception of colonial rule from the eyes of the colonized rather than colonizer. Although it should go without saying, the British forces arrived in the Sudan as a result of military conquest with battlefields anointed in Sudanese blood. Despite …

Channel Instability In A Braided Sand Bed River, William L. Graf
Channel Instability In A Braided Sand Bed River, William L. Graf
Faculty Publications
The Gila River of central Arizona is representative of braided, sand bed rivers in alluvial valleys that have inherent unstable behavior and destructive channel migration. The 112-year record of channel conditions along a portion of the Gila River provides data for the construction of locational probability maps for main flow channels. Zones of stability and hazardous instability alternate with each other at 3.2 km (2 mi) intervals. During the past century the overall sinuosity of the main flow channel has remained close to 1.18, despite numerous changes in actual location. Spatial and temporal variation of sinuosity have occurred in subreaches …

Diffusion, Reinforcement, Geopolitics, And The Spread Of War, Benjamin A. Most, Harvey Starr
Diffusion, Reinforcement, Geopolitics, And The Spread Of War, Benjamin A. Most, Harvey Starr
Faculty Publications
The discussion reports the results of an examination of the possible diffusion of new war participations during the 1946-65 era. A theoretical argument is developed to yield more precise expectations about when, where, why, and how diffusion processs might operate. Four diffusion-related processes (positive spatial diffusion, positive reinforcement, negative spatial diffusion, and negative reinforcement) are discussed and analyzed. A series of simple turnover tables and a focus on nations' borders are used to go beyond the authors' previous stochastic modeling efforts. The results provide strong evidence that is consistent with both the authors' theoretical argument and the general war diffusion …

Second Annual Report Of The Independent Evaluation Of The California Master Plan For Special Education Volume 1, Patricia Craig
Faculty Publications
This two-volume Second Annual Report presents the results of the data collection activities during the first year. The first volume is a nontechnical presentation of the research findings. We have tried to keep it as free of technical jargon as possible and have assumed that readers have some familiarity with the California Master Plan. Volume II is a technical appendix that discusses in detail the methodological aspects of the work. The purpose of this report is to describe concisely, informatively, and objectively the status of special education programs in districts, RLAs, and counties. Most of the information presented is based …

For Papua New Guineans,l as well as for those who wish to understand them better, traiditional knowledge of the local natural environment is a priceless resource. In the face of increasing commitments to a cash economy, however, many communities are rapidly losing their awareness and appreciation of the rich animal and plant worlds which are immediately available to them. As Powell has recently observed (1976), the recorded information regarding traditional plant knowledge and uses has tended to be widely-scattered in the literature and relatively difficult to access, especially for those who stand to benefit the most from it. A recent …
Water Use In Agriculture Now And For The Future, B. Gardner Delworth
Water Use In Agriculture Now And For The Future, B. Gardner Delworth
Faculty Publications
Water is the primary limiting factor in agriculture in the United States and the world. The western states have gained importance in agricultural production only through extensive use of irrigation from surface and groundwater sources. With the increase in population, these water supplies are facing new pressures for reallocation. Accurate scientific information concerning water availability, behavior, management, and value is essential in optimizing water allocation on farms, in agriculture, and among agriculture and the various other uses. This report is an overview of the physical, institutional, economic, and sociological aspects of the water issue from the standpoint of agriculture. It …
