The Perils Of Industrial Pig Farming, Richard A. Lobban

North Carolina is one the nation's several major meat-producing states. Why should we be much concerned about the lives of animals that were being raised for slaughter in the massive food industry? In fact, there is very much more at stake.
Extended Stratification: Immigrant And Native Differences In Individual And Family Labor., Pidi Zhang, Jimy M. Sanders
Extended Stratification: Immigrant And Native Differences In Individual And Family Labor., Pidi Zhang, Jimy M. Sanders
Faculty Publications
The article outlines a theoretical system of extended stratification in order to account for differences between immigrants and natives in the amount of time individuals devote to paid work and the number of family members participating in paid work. The extended stratification theory contends that because people have different socio-economic frames of reference, they vary in their willingness to work long hours in an effort to achieve modest improvements in their current socioeconomic circumstances. Thus, immigrants from relatively poor societies tend to see their richer host society as abundant in opportunities for getting ahead through hard work. Immigrants will often …

The Effects Of Music On Mood And Perception Of A Visual Stimulus, Elizabeth J. Vella Phd, Michael D. Irvin, Jason Solle, Scott Berendt, Erin E. Ramirez

We examined the influence of music on mood by instructing 81 undergraduate students to complete the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List–Revised (MAACLR) both before and after watching a 15-min video that was or was not paired with a piece of music. The 2 music categories were pleasant or depressing. Participants from the depressing group experienced a drop in positive affect, whereas participants from the pleasant group showed an increase on this measure. Men from the pleasant group had the highest pretreatment and lowest post treatment anxiety scores, whereas the women displayed no change in anxiety. The results indicate that music …

In this report I will begin by presenting (Part I) the background to the project, since the work performed during the fellowship period was a continuing part of a larger endeavor, begun in 1993. This sketch will be followed by (Part II), a characterization of my activities and their results at the Museum, and (Part III), a discussion of work remaining to be accomplished and plans for the future. Thirteen appendices (Part IV) will provide detailed information of various kinds that might be useful in whatever applications Museum staff choose to pursue resulting from this work.

KNOWLEDGE DISCOVERY IN DATABASES (KDD) revolves around the investigation and creation of knowledge, processes, algorithms, and the mechanisms for retrieving potential knowledge from data collections. Related issues include data collection, database design, the description of entries in the database using the most appropriate representation, and data quality. This article is an introductory overview of knowledge discovery in databases. The rationale and environment of its development and applications are discussed. Issues related to database design and collection are reviewed.

The Religious Right In Court: The Decision Making Of Christian Evangelicals In State Supreme Courts, Donald R. Songer, Susan J. Tabrizi
Faculty Publications
Much has been written recently about the emergence of evangelicals and others often labeled the "new Religious Right" in American politics. However, little attention has been paid to whether officials who have been socialized in the denominations characterized as being part of this Religious Right actually behave differently in office from those brought up in other religious traditions. The present study begins such an inquiry by examining differences in the voting behavior of state supreme court justices in three issue areas. Evangelical justices were found to be significantly more conservative than mainline Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish justices in death penalty, …

Law And Politics In Judicial Oversight Of Federal Administrative Agencies, Martha Anne Humphries, Donald R. Songer
Law And Politics In Judicial Oversight Of Federal Administrative Agencies, Martha Anne Humphries, Donald R. Songer
Faculty Publications
Administrative agencies play a substantial role in the formulation and implementation of national policy Central to this role is their exercise of discretion. A normative consensus exists that such discretion should be constrained by administrative deference to the rule of law. The courts of appeals are expected to insure that such discretion is constrained. The analysis reported below examines how effectively they fulfill that expectation The findings suggest that agency success is related to political considerations, with agencies being successful when their decisions are consistent with the policy preferences of the judges. However, variables that captured elements of the legal …

Because of its deleterious effects on individuals and society, and the important role that it has been given in several theories of human behavior (e.g., psychoanalytic theory, social learning theory; Freud, 1930; Bandura & Walters, 1959; Bandura, 1986), aggression has been one of the most widely researched topics in the past several decades. Although many important advances have been made in our understanding of aggressive behavior, most of this knowledge has been gained through the study of aggressive males only (Crick & Dodge, 1994; Parke, 1992; Robins, 1986) and through the study of forms of aggression that are more characteristic …

Are There Ways To Enhance China's Food Security?, B. Gardner Delworth, Yahui Zhao

Chinese officials and newspapers express considerable concern about the country's capacity to feed its huge and still growing population. The rhetoric will be familiar to people in Western countries as a blend of "agrarian fundamentalism" and "Malthusianism." But beyond the official rhetoric, we will argue that reforms in land ownership and irrigation water pricing and management could have highly salutary impacts on agricultural output that could alleviate food shortages far into the future.

Native American groups across the country have been protesting the use of their symbols and heritage in sports arenas for over a decade. Yet, particularly in the realm of professional sports, these protests have not generated significant changes in attitudes and practices. This critical essay examines several Native American protest events to reveal the factors contributing to the failure of the reform movement and to suggest some strategies for rhetorically reformulating the campaign.

Graphic Novels And The Reluctant Reader, Gail De Vos

What has happened to influence this change? First, the quality of comic books, particularly graphic novels, is now formally acknowledged. Graphic novels, the sturdy, lengthy comic books that contain one story or a set of related stories, are now being sporadically reviewed in selection journals as well as being the focus of a large number of recent articles. But the most compelling reason is wider awareness of our highly visual culture and its impact on our youth. Far from receiving stories from television and film passively, readers of comic books are actively constructing meaning from the text and illustrations and …

Questions Of Race And Gender: Evangelina Cisneros And The Spanish-Cuban-American War, Anne Fountain

At the turn of the century, the name "Evangelina Cisneros" (known in Cuba as Evangelina Cossio) was a household term throughout the United States. Newspapers and books described her daring escape from a Havana prison, and pleas on her behalf flourished--including a request for clemency by Queen Victoria and an eloquent letter from the wife of Jefferson Davis. Although the Cisneros saga has all but disappeared in the general historical references to the eighteen nineties, her prison predicament and her prominence in the press of the times reflect fundamental issues of race and gender that are part of the socio-political …

In this article we intend to focus on the narrow but increasingly more signif icant issue of retractors in malpractice actions against therapists. It is generally believed that people do not make confessions unless they are actually guilty. It is also generally believed that retractors who recant their earlier statements must now be telling the truth. Courts have allowed expert testimony to be admitted on the issue of why people will falsely confess. In this paper we argue that expert testimony on why people falsely recant should also be admissible.
