First-year students—particularly first-generation, in underrepresented groups, or are socioeconomically-disadvantaged—often struggle to transition from high school level writing and researching to college level. Representatives from the University of Memphis Libraries, English Department, Center for Writing and Communication, and TRiO Student Success Programs collaborated with colleagues in academic and student support across campus on improving the success of first-year writers and researchers. Science librarians at Brigham Young University have hosted a student poster competition for the past several years to showcase student research on campus and to promote science information literacy and scholarly communication skills. As part of this competition, students receive constructive feedback on both their poster design and their oral presentation skills during an in-person open house. In 2020, COVID-19 threw a curveball as the campus shut down just two weeks before the scheduled competition open house. From a Presentation given at ELUNA Learns, September 8, 2021. This presentation discusses the importance of using quality data in describing non_English Language material, as often errors negatively impact searching and public displays. By correcting the language codes, add 800 paired MARC fields, and correcting Diacritics the library can improve the quality of these records.

This preliminary research examines the health information practices of South Carolina LGBTQ+ communities. Findings have the following implications for LIS education at a global level: building cultural competency regarding the role of information in marginalizing certain populations, and training students to engage in user outreach and advocacy. These implications address a global need for LIS education to encompass social responsibility and inclusion into program curricula.

An online instructional framework, called “decision-based learning,” helps students learn to think like an expert through making a series of simple decisions that the expert has trained into his or her thought patterns. This framework is currently being tested in one-hour information literacy workshops for engineering and technology students. This lightning talk briefly describes the decision-based learning method and results of this study so far.

Courtney Turner received an honorable mention at the undergraduate academic poster competition sponsored by the Black Doctoral Network, which held its national conference on October 25-27, 2018 in Charlotte, N.C. The poster, “The Black Panther Effect: Movie Ups Aggie Swag,” summarized survey results from a pilot study of nearly 260 N.C. A&T students about their reaction to the movie. It was the first time in the history of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department that a student has placed in a national undergraduate research poster competition. I was Courtney's mentor.

A library construction project led our library’s Science & Engineering Department to take on a massive evaluation of the entire science print collection and reduce the collection footprint by at least 36% within a 12 month period. In order to improve access, reduce the footprint, strengthen the robustness of our collection, and complete the project in an effective and timely manner, a methodology of how to choose, select, evaluate, and move the entire collection of over 360,000 items had to be established and vetted. Archives and libraries are seen as public hubs of information on demand. As expectations for digital information grows, it is imperative that archives and libraries strive to accommodate users' growing needs for effective online access, while ensuring the longevity of digitized and born-digital primary sources. As physical archival materials age and begin to degrade, there is a push to digitize for further access so that the originals can be better preserved. By making digital collections available online, scholarship is made more widely known. This workshop covers the process of completing successful digitization projects. The presentations will include selecting and evaluating materials to digitize, scanning and appropriate formats, ingesting digital surrogates for accessibility, storage and preservation, and copyright issues for digitized materials. During the course of 2016 and 2017, the Louisiana Digital Library is undergoing migration from CONTENTdm to Islandora. The presentation will illustrate many changes for both users and collection administrators through side by side comparisons of tasks in the old and new versions of the LDL, ranging from searching for subject terms to uploading collections. The presentation will detail the process of metadata transformation and will conclude with a discussion of anticipated features.

The presentation will give an overview of the migration of the Louisiana Digital Library (LDL) from CONTENTdm to Islandora. Metadata transformation, file conversions, workflows, and useful tools will be covered. The presenter will provide a tour of the new software from the user's perspective, and will highlight improved features such as faceting, search capabilities, and viewers. A comparison of the uploading and editing processes in Islandora versus CONTENTdm will be offered. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of features in development.

National Louis University (NLU) provides access to local collections through an Institutional Repository and Special Collections and Archives digital collections. We use open access as an effective and value-added method for contributing to scholarship and outreach to different communities, including alumni. As NLU celebrates our 125th anniversary this year, we utilize digital collections to promote and provide access to our unique history. This presentation will discuss materials selected for inclusion and the multiple ways open access collections can contribute to a university's scholarship and reputation.

Many of the challenges librarians face in the 21st century have existed for years and reflect the nature of higher education and society in the United States. The English translation of the title is: "What's the Point of Outreach in Lean Times? Case Study at a University Library in the Western USA." During the recession after a worldwide housing bubble, this presentation was itself about library outreach as well as library outreach itself, using the case of the Harold B Lee Library.
