Large libraries share a common challenge--helping patrons find materials. The Wayne State University Library System launched its library mapping application in February 2010, designed to help locate materials in the five WSU libraries. The system works within the catalog to show the location of materials, as well as provides a web form for use at the reference desk to lookup items by call number. Developed using open-source technology, it requires only minimal effort to update using a unique call number overlay mechanism. Faculty may be unaware of how many library resources are available to support their course assignments. Additionally their assignments may not be designed in a way that makes the best use of library resources. “Shopping list” assignments may cause students to spend too much time searching and not enough time engaging with the material and developing higher order thinking skills.

Turning the attention of librarians and technologists away from digitization and implementation of digital projects, this program will examine development trends after a digital project has been launched. Arguing that a digital project is never "complete", the presenters explore and demonstrate recent library initiatives to develop services that improve a digital collection's visibility and value. Academic libraries support their universities' goals of developing and maintaining successful research programs. As the information landscape and researcher practices change, recognition of the library's role in supporting research may be diminishing. This article will explore some aspects of the academic research enterprise and identify opportunities libraries can use to position themselves as key members of the research enterprise as well as increase their visibility among the research community. In recent years, College of Nursing faculty and students have visited the Science and Engineering Library (which houses the Nursing Collection) less frequently to obtain reference assistance and research support. In partnership with Michigan cultural institutions, and state and national funding agencies including the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Library of Michigan, the Wayne State University Library System's New Media & Information Technology unit has been a pioneer developer of digital library collections, including the Virtual Motor City, Digital Dress, and Herman Miller Collections. These collections are accessed thousands of times per month. However, technological barriers and an ad-hoc knowledge base result in hit-and-miss use in online instruction by both faculty and students. The session reports on two institutional initiatives for connecting first-year students with the library. The first project, situated in a research university environment, Wayne State University, utilized technology to create a first-year webpage (http://www.lib.wayne.edu/sites/fye/) that brought together library information and resources with relevant university-wide services. The presenters begin with a demonstration of the webpage, discussing the impetus for the project, the literature review and other research that went into the design and development. They report on the findings of the usability studies conducted with the webpage. Using a think-aloud protocol reviewed by the university’s institutional review board, students completed a …

Manufacturing Menopause: An Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Menopause And Information Content On Pharmaceutical Web Sites, Deborah H. Charbonneau

Consumer-targeted prescription drug advertising serves as an interesting lens through which we can examine the portrayal of menopause in online drug advertisements. The aim of this study was to explore the portrayal of menopause on web sites sponsored by pharmaceutical companies for hormone therapies (HT). To unravel this question, a qualitative content analysis of web sites for FDA-approved hormone therapies was employed. A total number of 608 printed pages of web site content from eight web sites (N=8) were analyzed. Key findings elucidated how menopause was portrayed on the pharmaceutical web sites. Purpose – This paper summarizes the importance of rare materials for academic libraries including developments since the arrival of the Internet and the effects of declining library budgets.

Design/methodology/approach – The authors reviewed the literature on the subject coupled with their experiences with collection development.

Findings – Collecting rare materials remains important for scholarly research though harder to justify during a period of budget stringency. Academic libraries should discover creative ways to discover and add rare materials to their collections. Rare materials require special expertise in their acquisition, processing, storage, and use. For most of their development as disciplines, the social sciences were fragmented, often contested subjects in academia. Their fields of concern – humanity, society, and human relationships with the environment – placed them in both the humanities and natural sciences camps of the academic world. Indeed, specializations in the broader field of the social sciences did not occur until the Twentieth century, causing a splinter of subject areas that refused to have anything to do with one another. However, this era of retrenchment has ended, and the traditional boundaries between the social sciences has once again become indistinct. But there …

Citizenship in the Humanities and Social Sciences is a selective bibliography consisting of citations to works published during the years 2000-2009 on citizenship-related topics in the humanities and social sciences. Primarily consisting of books/chapters and scholarly journal articles, the bibliography also includes other materials (case studies, reports, dissertations, and working papers) for which scholarship, authority and relevance have been established. Most cited works are published in the English language, although articles published in other languages using a Latin alphabet are also included. Wayne State University’s Digital Learning and Development Environment was a research and development project aimed at developing a prototype for a systematic approach to digital learning using image repositories. The repositories used in the project were two of the Wayne State University Library System’s (WSULS) Digital Collections: Virtual Motor City and Digital Dress. The Collections are web portals providing universal access to digitized objects of cultural history from dispersed holdings of WSULS’s institutional partners.
