Descriptions in a library archive are the anchoring guide to all information that’s available to those who are researching a subject of their choosing. For hundreds of years, estates, historical documents, artifacts, moving images, and sound material have been donated to libraries and universities for the use of higher education, but without a tool to help one navigate the endless amount of information, knowledge will become doormat if there’s no organizational means of looking it up. The Wayne State University Press Journals program comprises ten scholarly print serials. When the Press sought to deliver its journals electronically, in-house, for the first time, it established a mutually beneficial collaboration with the Libraries to host, format, manage and preserve its content online. This chapter represents a case study of this collaboration, documenting the program, the process, and the unique features of this partnership.

This presentation was delivered at the event, "Converge and Ingest: Learning About Digital Preservation", organized by Wayne State University's National Student Digital Alliance (NDSA) student chapter.

Focusing on the research of a new digital collections platform, this presentation touched on some available open-source options, and what functionality and infrastructure is needed to manage, preserve, and provide access to digital collections.

This panel session reports on a professional development workshop series to prepare librarians to assume a more engaged role in the university. The goal of the program is to re-examine the librarian’s role, focusing on the liaison role as the unifying agent to cultivate engagement with users through the teaching-learning process. Attendees will complete sample activities from the workshops and will learn how this model might be adapted to their own institutional setting.

The session reports on two institutional initiatives for connecting first-year students with the library. The first project, situated in a research university environment, Wayne State University, utilized technology to create a first-year webpage (http://www.lib.wayne.edu/sites/fye/) that brought together library information and resources with relevant university-wide services. The presenters begin with a demonstration of the webpage, discussing the impetus for the project, the literature review and other research that went into the design and development. At a time when universities and colleges are placing emphasis on the first-year experience, there has been an effort on the part of the libraries to address this audience with a customized approach. Involvement with academic orientation programs is one method of reaching these first year students, and as one step the Wayne State University Library System has established a presence in the university’s iStart program (http://www.istart.wayne.edu/). Canada has a long history of adapting United States subject access tools, including the Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), the Dewey Decimal Classification, and the Sears List of Subject Headings, to meet the specific needs of Canadians. This paper addresses the extensions to these American tools for English-speaking Canadians. While the United States and Canada have many similarities, differences exist that require changing terminology and providing greater depth and precision in subject headings and classification for specifically Canadian topics.
