The Aphasia Friendly Business Campaign: Program Expansion And Evaluation, Julia Borsatto Sep 2023

The Aphasia Friendly Business Campaign: Program Expansion And Evaluation, Julia Borsatto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Aphasia Friendly Business Campaign (AFBC) is a training program that was created to address the lack of public knowledge of aphasia. Previous work has demonstrated that the in-person delivery of the AFBC was efficacious in achieving training outcomes (i.e., improve trainee’s knowledge of aphasia and perceived ability to communicate with people with aphasia; Borsatto et al., 2021). This dissertation describes the expansion of the AFBC training program to a virtual platform, assesses its efficacy, and investigates how the virtual delivery compared to its in-person counterpart. In addition, outcome and impact program evaluations (i.e., post-tests and semi-structured interviews [SSI], respectively) …

More Than A Game: Sports Branding In Canadian Politics And The Canadian-American Relationship, Tyler Joseph Rohleder

Major Papers

The topic of sports and politics is extremely relevant in today's world. This paper looks at how sports branding within Canadian politics provides a tangible advantage to former athletes turned politicians, while these branding efforts also provide politicians who associate themselves with the phenomenon of sport a strategic advantage, termed the “Athlete Advantage.” These advantages are in a multitude of areas such as name recognition, higher approval ratings, and further political aspirations. This “athlete advantage” of sports branding is then expanded on in the form of sport diplomacy. With sport diplomacy and branding the concept of the “Athlete Advantage” is …

Romantic Relationships In Young Adults: The Influence Of Parents And Friends, Jenna Elizabeth Thompson Sep 2023

Romantic Relationships In Young Adults: The Influence Of Parents And Friends, Jenna Elizabeth Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Romantic relationships occur in the context of family and friend relationships and in the context of the greater culture. Studies using a variety of methods have found that young adults are more likely to be interested in a romantic partner, have longer relationships, and have more satisfying and more loving relationships when their parents and friends approve of their romantic relationship (e.g., Parks et al., 1983 Le et al., 2010; Sinclair & Ellithorpe, 2014). Evolutionary psychology provides motives for parents and friends to form opinions and attempt to influence romantic relationships (Trivers, 1974). Developmentally, emerging and young adults navigate changing …

Emotion Profiles In Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: Early Observations Anticipate Treatment Outcome, Florencia Andrea Cristoffanini Sep 2023

Emotion Profiles In Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: Early Observations Anticipate Treatment Outcome, Florencia Andrea Cristoffanini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can have various clinical presentations and is also difficult to treat. Researchers have investigated whether subtypes of BPD could explain variability in clinical presentations and outcomes after treatment. Previous research has identified subtypes of BPD based on temperament, which explain some variation in symptoms and outcomes. However, subtypes have typically been created using extensive self-report or structured-interview data. Instead, creating identifiable emotion profiles based on observational data could have a wider range of clinical and research applications, while helping to explain heterogeneity in BPD presentations and outcomes. This thesis is designed to look at emotion profiles …

Academic Stress And Cultural Coping: The Moderating Effect Of Heritage Language Proficiency On Well-Being In A Multilingual Sample, Noah Marcel Philipp-Muller Aug 2023

Academic Stress And Cultural Coping: The Moderating Effect Of Heritage Language Proficiency On Well-Being In A Multilingual Sample, Noah Marcel Philipp-Muller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Coping is a set of behaviours that enable stress management. Traditional theories of coping have examined engagement coping and avoidant coping, but recent work has begun to shed light on culture-specific collective coping strategies. Collective coping varies between cultural groups, but generally helps preserve well-being and reduce psychopathology by affirming an individual’s connection to the rest of their cultural group. Experiments testing this model show that collective coping partially explains the relationship between academic stress and well-being. Language plays a vital role in both the transmission and preservation of cultural information. Given the role of language and communication in regulating …

However, few have investigated the challenges international graduate students face in maintaining academic integrity, a major issue affecting international students’ academic …

Engagement, Satisfaction, And Positive Student Outcomes: The Most Prevalent Factors At Canada's Public Universities, Denise Deblock Aug 2023

Engagement, Satisfaction, And Positive Student Outcomes: The Most Prevalent Factors At Canada's Public Universities, Denise Deblock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests that higher levels of student engagement are positively correlated with higher levels of student satisfaction. The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) benchmark measures have been found to be significantly correlated with institutional outcomes related to student satisfaction, such as graduation rates and retention. Although there has been an extensive amount of research conducted on ranking HEIs, student satisfaction, and student engagement, there remained a noticeable gap in the literature: the examination of the ranking of Canadian institutions’ student satisfaction, student engagement and positive student outcome variables. As such, we offer a novel study in the context of …

What Do You Want Your Teachers To Know? Using Intergenerational Reflections In Education Research, Catherine Vanner Jul 2023

What Do You Want Your Teachers To Know? Using Intergenerational Reflections In Education Research, Catherine Vanner

Education Publications

The Intergenerational Reflections technique was developed to bring together the voices of connected stakeholders of different ages and positions—in this case, students and teachers—to create recommendations that build on both groups’ perspectives. This article describes its use and results as piloted in the Time to Teach about Gender-Based Violence in Canada project. The project gathered 11 teacher participants in a participatory workshop to mobilize teachers’ reflections on student-produced cellphilms responding to the prompt: “What do you want your teachers to know when teaching about gender-based violence?” Framed using hooks’ engaged pedagogy, analysis describes teachers’ identification of potential pedagogical adaptations responding …

Revealing The Invisible Cage: Understanding Coercive Control Through The Eyes Of Survivors In The Era Of Covid-19, Chloë Elizabeth Eidlitz Jul 2023

Revealing The Invisible Cage: Understanding Coercive Control Through The Eyes Of Survivors In The Era Of Covid-19, Chloë Elizabeth Eidlitz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Coercive control (CC) is a pervasive, systematic pattern of behaviors used by an intimate partner to exert power over, manipulate, intimidate, control, and undermine a victim’s ability to leave the relationship. Compared to intimate partner violence (IPV) involving physical violence alone, abusive relationships marked by CC are linked with more long-lasting psychological consequences and an increased risk for more severe physical injuries, including domestic homicide. Dutton and Goodman (2005) created a theoretical model outlining distinct and interrelated components involved in the development and maintenance of coercively controlling relationships. In this qualitative study, I investigated whether components of this model reflect …

Homelessness And Intimate Partner Violence: Women’S Barriers And Experiences With Accessing Formal Support Services And The Impact Of Their Intersecting Identities, Marissa Marie Rakus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Women experiencing homelessness and intimate partner violence (IPV) can endure many hardships, including a lack of shelter and necessities, financial issues, unemployment, and physical and mental illnesses (Acosta & Toro, 2000; Hwang, 2001; Ponce et al., 2014). Despite these adversities, many women experiencing homelessness and IPV do not use formal support services due to factors related to finances, inaccessibility, controlling partners, and stigma, among other factors (Campbell et al., 2015; Fugate et al., 2005; Narendorf, 2017). The current literature lacks studies that examine the formal service experiences of women who have undergone both homelessness and IPV the potential barriers they …

Exploration Of The Relationship Between Social Support And Healthcare Utilization Among Adult Immigrants To Canada, Naomi Ruth Levitz Shobola Jun 2023

Exploration Of The Relationship Between Social Support And Healthcare Utilization Among Adult Immigrants To Canada, Naomi Ruth Levitz Shobola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Healthcare is only a protective factor regarding health outcomes if it is used. While differences exist across various populations regarding healthcare utilization, this study focuses on people born outside of Canada, specifically landed immigrants (permanent residents), using the Canadian Community Health Survey 2017/2018 (CCHS). Those born outside of Canada are an increasingly large segment of the Canadian population. Therefore, their healthcare use represents an increasing portion of healthcare utilization. For a variety of sociodemographic and systemic reasons, utilization rates for this population are likely to vary. This study explores two potentially protective factors and their interaction in predicting healthcare access, …

The Neoliberal Implementation Of Housing First Principles And Chronic Homelessness In Women, Natalie Weir Jun 2023

The Neoliberal Implementation Of Housing First Principles And Chronic Homelessness In Women, Natalie Weir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The existing literature has consistently established that homelessness is a status arrived at intersectionally (Calsyn and Morse 1991). Although the lack of adequate housing is a clear problem, the provision of housing may not solve the problems that may have contributed to rendering an individual homeless (Lenon, 2000). Downplaying the contributing factors, such as a lack of social capital, substance abuse, as well as the highly influential gendered inequalities of a male-dominated society that economically and socially disadvantaged women, allows for the problem of chronic homelessness to persist (Calsyn and Morse, 1991; Lenon, 2000). This research study explores gender, policy, …

Mental Illness Through The Eyes Of Iraqi Ontarians: Unheard Voices For Conventional Mental Health Supports, Mohamad Musa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While the influx of Middle Eastern migrant groups continues to grow around the world, displaced Iraqis make up a significant portion of this inflow as they flee Iraq’s internal conflict and corruption, leaving behind political, economic, and environmental disparities. The 2011 National Household Survey found that Canada is home to 49,680 Iraqis, with more than 37,000 refugees who arrived between 2003 and 2018. The author conducted an exploratory qualitative research study to explain the perceptions of mental illness among Iraqi migrant groups in Ontario, Canada. Utilizing critical realism as the philosophical framework for this study, the author used a combination …

The Eye At Your Door: The Responsibilized Citizen-Consumer In The Expanding Surveillant Assemblage, Rebecca Anne Croucher Jun 2023

The Eye At Your Door: The Responsibilized Citizen-Consumer In The Expanding Surveillant Assemblage, Rebecca Anne Croucher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explored the emergence of smart-home technologies, such as Amazon Ring, and investigated the impact of these technological devices in relation to surveillance, policing, and consumption practices. It asked to answer the overarching question: how is the home, through smart-home tech devices exemplified by Amazon Ring, being attached to the surveillant assemblage? Building on existing theories and concepts, including the surveillant assemblage (Ericson and Haggerty, 2000), responsibilization (Garland, 1996), and the citizen-consumer (Cohen, 2003), this thesis posited that the citizen-consumer has become responsibilized by both state agents and private corporations to consume smart-home technologies, and that this has consumption …

The Psychedelic Dasein: Modelling The Effects Of Psilocybin With Heidegger’S Phenomenology, Eamon Robert Stuart Macdougall May 2023

The Psychedelic Dasein: Modelling The Effects Of Psilocybin With Heidegger’S Phenomenology, Eamon Robert Stuart Macdougall

Major Papers

This paper argues that the mystical experience induced by psilocybin (understood through the tradition of Heideggerian phenomenology) modulates the attuned understanding of oneself, the world, and how the individual relates to the world. This kind of particular experience is not accessible to the individual through ordinary consciousness, therefore psilocybin may give us access to a new kind of understanding. This understanding may offer a solution to the empirical deficiencies surrounding the short-term and long-term effects of psilocybin, such as how a meagre two to three high doses have yielded unprecedented results in the treatment of tobacco addiction, and in the …

The Unique Challenges Of The Carbon Offsetting And Reduction Scheme For International Aviation (Corsia), Olajumoke Abisola Rosemary Oginni May 2023

The Unique Challenges Of The Carbon Offsetting And Reduction Scheme For International Aviation (Corsia), Olajumoke Abisola Rosemary Oginni

Major Papers

Air transportation is a particularly contentious issue in climate disputes. This concern is because they emit emissions like those produced by the combustion of fossil fuels. Consequently, the aviation industry is recognized as one of the top ten emitters in the world, with emissions expected to soar. As the emissions from the industry begin to rise, the increase raises serious environmental concerns about its global impact and influence on people on the ground. When non-CO2 effects are excluded, aviation emissions began to account for 2.1% of global emissions, leading the aviation industry, national governments, civil society, and international organizations to …

Specialization Vs Diversification: The Rise And Fall Of Windsor-Essex’S Automotive Industry, Mikal Fakhreddin May 2023

Specialization Vs Diversification: The Rise And Fall Of Windsor-Essex’S Automotive Industry, Mikal Fakhreddin

Major Papers

There is a longstanding debate between economic specialization, focussing on the production of a limited set of goods, and economic diversification, producing a wide variation of goods and services. While economic diversity boasts a stable and resilient economy, specialization claims to lead to rapid growth. This study explores both schools of thought, examining the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches, and applies them to Windsor-Essex as a case study on the city’s reliance on the automotive industry. This paper explores the rise of the automotive industry from the 1970s, examines unemployment rates following economic downturns, analyzes the economic state of …

The Tax Effects Of Intergenerational Transfers: A Quantitative Exercise., Belinda Ewuraadwoa Arhin Boateng May 2023

The Tax Effects Of Intergenerational Transfers: A Quantitative Exercise., Belinda Ewuraadwoa Arhin Boateng

Major Papers

Economists predict transfer of wealth from one generation to the next due to increased global wealth. This transfer of wealth is predicted to widen already existing poverty gaps in some economies. Some economists have suggested the taxation of intergenerational transfers in a bid to increase government revenue and reduce the widening gaps between the poor and the rich. This study captures the key mechanisms at work in assessing the labour earnings reaction to changes in unearned income, emanating from gifts and bequests that heirs receive. Three theoretical models are developed to understand the labor earnings reaction with varying unearned income …

The Effect Of Quantitative Easing On The Financial Market In Canada, Ashiqur Rahman May 2023

The Effect Of Quantitative Easing On The Financial Market In Canada, Ashiqur Rahman

Major Papers

This empirical study examines the effects of quantitative easing (QE) on the Canadian financial market. Specifically, the study focuses on the Bank of Canada's Government of Canada Bond Purchase Program (GBPP), conducted during COVID-19 between 2020 and 2022. I use two analytical methods, e.g., event study and time series analysis, to quantify the impact of the Bank of Canada's large asset purchases on the 10-year government bond yield's term premium. The results indicate that the Bank of Canada's $260 billion asset purchases in 2020 would reduce the 10-year term premium by 34 basis points, which suggests the significant impact of …

Cuban Embargo: An Insufficient Measure To Encourage Us Foreign Policy Interests, Esme Jm Prowse May 2023

Cuban Embargo: An Insufficient Measure To Encourage Us Foreign Policy Interests, Esme Jm Prowse

Major Papers

This major paper examines the Cuban embargo as an ineffective hard power policy and explores the potential of soft, hard, and smart power as alternative approaches to resolve the failures of the 60-year-old blockade. The paper analyzes the historical context and rationale behind the embargo and assesses its impact on Cuban-American relations, regional stability, and U.S. national interests. The study argues that the embargo has failed to achieve its intended goals and has instead perpetuated a cycle of hostility, isolation, and human rights abuses. By drawing on the theoretical frameworks of soft, hard, and smart power, the paper presents policy …

Amending Amendments: Digital Colonialism, Bill C-11, And Assessing The Call For Improvement, Kayla Victoria Destiny Clarke May 2023

Amending Amendments: Digital Colonialism, Bill C-11, And Assessing The Call For Improvement, Kayla Victoria Destiny Clarke

Major Papers

Media scholars Nick Couldry and Ulises Mejias (2019) define digital colonialism as the “term for the extension of a global process of extraction that started under colonialism and continues through industrial capitalism, culminating in today's new form: instead of natural resources in labor, what is now being appropriated is human life through its conversion into data” (p. 22). This research will critically analyze the Canadian government’s ill-received Bill C-11: the Amended Consumer Privacy Protection Act by using digital colonialism as a conceptual framework to reveal the Bill’s essential limitations. It will consist of two sections: 1) an in-depth exploration of …
