Effects Of Instructional Set On The Comfortable Loudness Range, Jay R. Lucker May 1978

Effects Of Instructional Set On The Comfortable Loudness Range, Jay R. Lucker

Jay Lucker

Ten normal-hearing young adult subjects measured their Comfortable Loudness Ranges (CLRs) using two instructional sets. The first instructional set (range tracking) was similar to the Bekesy Comfortable Loudness tracking method described by Jerger and Jerger (1974). The second instructional set (limit tracking) required the subjects to perform separate trackings of each limit (upper and lower) of their CLRs. Results demonstrated a 34.4 dB difference between CLRs for the two instructional sets. The range tracking method yielded the narrowest CLR. Both instructional sets yielded similar upper limits of the CLR. The results of the present investigation demonstrate the importance of instructions …

Schooling And Inequality In Pre-Revolutionary Ethiopia, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1977

Schooling And Inequality In Pre-Revolutionary Ethiopia, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

"In the past, the naive observer could only be impressed that Ethiopia offed free education through the university level. In many cases, students were even furnished small stipends to subsist (Abir, 1970). However, an examination of the educational profile of prerevolutionary Ethiopia reveals that it was characterized by a low school attendance and sexual inequality. The dropout rate was very high, and unemployment among high school graduates was quite conspicuous. The purpose of this study is to highlight the lack of educational opportunity that existed in prerevolutionary Ethiopia." ~ from the article

The Conceptual Determinants Of Two Archetypal City Forms, Nicholas Patricios Dec 1973

The Conceptual Determinants Of Two Archetypal City Forms, Nicholas Patricios

Nicholas Patricios

The two urban spatial forms analyzed from a cosmological point of view are the circular and the orthogonal. The circular symbolism of the Near Eastern cities is considered first followed by the Plato's theoretical city of Atlantis and then the ideal cities of the Renaissance architects. Circular cities of the 19th century, those of the Utopian Socialists, had in contrast an ideological basis. In addition to the practical basis for the orthogonal layout conceptual influences are evident in the grid cities of the ancient Greeks, in the Spanish Laws of the Indies, and those cities designed later to express the …

Some Improvements To The Minimop Multi-Access Operating System, Michael Rees Dec 1970

Some Improvements To The Minimop Multi-Access Operating System, Michael Rees

Michael J Rees

The MINIMOP Multi-Access system provides a range of on-line facilities particularly suitable for a university environment. Programs in ALGOL and FORTRAN can be written and tested under MINIMOP; a conversational subsystem, derived from JOSS, considerably enhances the usefulness of the Multi-Access system. After one year's operation at the University of Southampton, it was considered desirable to attempt to expand the facilities of MINIMOP, and correct some of the faults still present in the system. This paper, after a brief description of the basic system, describes the modifications that have been made, and presents some extensions that may be possible in …
