Health Locus Of Control And Depression In End-Stage Renal Disease, Alan Christensen, Charles Turner, Timothy Smith May 1991

Health Locus Of Control And Depression In End-Stage Renal Disease, Alan Christensen, Charles Turner, Timothy Smith

Alan J. Christensen

Research on the association between health locus of control and depression in chronic illness has produced contradictory findings, perhaps because of a failure to consider contextual variables. In this study of 96 hemodialysis patients, the belief that one's health is controllable was associated with less depression among Ss who had not previously experienced a failed renal transplant. This belief was associated with greater depression for Ss who had returned to dialysis following an unsuccessful transplant. This interactive effect occurred among severely ill Ss, but health locus of control was unrelated to depression among Ss with less severe disease. This pattern …

Health Science Information Management. An Approach To Improving Qa And Clinical Practice, J Williamson, E. Reerink, A Donabedian, C. Turner, Alan Christensen

Alan J. Christensen

To help quality assurance (QA) professionals and clinical practitioners keep up with advances in health care knowledge and technology, we describe a prototype Health Science Information Management (HSIM) publication. We conceptualize HSIM to include: (a) identification of unique science information needs; (b) rapid retrieval of valid needed information; and (c) use the information to improve health care benefits. To more adequately accomplish these functions, we suggest that five specific categories of information will be essential: (1) reports of recent advances in Science Information Management methods; (2) original reports of Science Information Syntheses (SISs) providing information immediately applicable for QA; (3) …

A Ritual For Attempting Leave-Taking In Colombia, Kristine Fitch Dec 1990

A Ritual For Attempting Leave-Taking In Colombia, Kristine Fitch

Kristine Muñoz

This article presents a conversational enactment of a leave-taking ritual, an archetype for Colombian spoken life, for the purpose of conversational analysis. This conversational enactment is drawn from audiotaped, naturally-occurring conversation recorded in Colombia in 1987. The purpose of analyzing this conversation is both to describe a conversational sequence which performs a symbolic activity among Colombians during leave-taking from social gatherings, and to elucidate what ethnographic information may (and may not) emerge from conversation analysis. The author of this article hopes to demonstrate that in this speech pattern an interpersonal ideology is revealed which revolves around the crucial importance of …

C. G. Jung In The Light Of Asian Psychology, Philip Novak Dec 1990

C. G. Jung In The Light Of Asian Psychology, Philip Novak

Philip Novak

"I think it is fair to say that in the first half of this century much of what the West learned about the Asian understanding of mind came, in one way or another, through Jung. Jung was open to the possibility that Asian religious doctrines and methods might contain valuable psychological insight, and he wrote and reflected on the wisdom of the East fairly extensively. We owe him a debt of gratitude for breaking interesting ground, but now doubt whether his pioneering speculations on these matters have lasting value. To see the East through Jung's eyes is , finally, to …

Sexually Aggressive Murder: A Case Study, Kenneth Tunnell, Terry Cox Dec 1990

Sexually Aggressive Murder: A Case Study, Kenneth Tunnell, Terry Cox

Kenneth Tunnell

This paper, from research of a larger qualitative case study, describes a random abduction and murder that involved both sexual and aggressive components. The social-psychological and psychiatric history of the of fender and the interactive effects associated with the murder episode are described. This study reveals the complexities of a capital case involving an offender with overt psychiatric and psychological disorders. Further more, we demonstrate the complexity of a capital case with the components of sex and aggression and situate this offender as one who potentially could have become a serial murderer.

The Interplay Of Linguistic Universals And Cultural Knowledge In Personal Address: Colombian Madre Terms, Kristine Fitch

Kristine Muñoz

The question may usefully be pursued through the investigation of the personal address. Previous research; A study of `Madre' terms in Colombia; Results; Conclusion

Marketing Margins, Market Power, And Price Uncertainty, John Schroeter, Azzeddine Azzam Dec 1990

Marketing Margins, Market Power, And Price Uncertainty, John Schroeter, Azzeddine Azzam

Azzeddine Azzam

This paper provides a conceptual and empirical framework for analyzing marketing margins in a noncompetitive food-processing industry facing output price uncertainty. The framework allows for the decomposition of observed margins into components reflecting the marginal cost of the processing industry, oligopoly/oligopsony price distortions, and an output price risk component. The empirical procedure is applied to a time series of spreads between wholesale pork prices and farm prices of market hogs. The principal finding is that, while farm/wholesale margins are more consistent with competitive performance now than they were fifteen years ago, the output price risk component persisted throughout the sample …
