Substance Use Disorders & Ethical Considerations For Social Workers, John Orwat, Lynn Boyle, Michael Dentato, Tamara Faulkner-Beard Dec 2013

Substance Use Disorders & Ethical Considerations For Social Workers, John Orwat, Lynn Boyle, Michael Dentato, Tamara Faulkner-Beard

Michael P. Dentato, PhD, MSW

A code of ethics are central to professional social work practice, setting standards by which social workers seek guidance and direction with their work.  Such codes guide ethical decision making and educate professionals about their ethical behavior and challenges and, to some extent, standards of practice.  Practice with substance use disorders, however, encompasses several unique factors that warrant elucidation and discussion. With a focus on the substance use disorder treatment system, this chapter will focus on the various macro, mezzo, and micro level issues that present situations in which ethical principles conflict.  The goal is not to identify “correct” ethical …

Well-Being And Health Considerations For The Aging Lesbian Community: Understanding Age Cohorts, Partnerships And Caregiving Among Other Unique Needs, Michael Dentato, Shelley Craig, Lauren Mcinroy Dec 2013

Well-Being And Health Considerations For The Aging Lesbian Community: Understanding Age Cohorts, Partnerships And Caregiving Among Other Unique Needs, Michael Dentato, Shelley Craig, Lauren Mcinroy

Michael P. Dentato, PhD, MSW

Effectively exploring the well-being, health and mental health needs of the aging lesbian community can often be difficult and multi-leveled, while insuring a competent and comprehensive assessment of needs.  A limited amount of research has specifically attended to the lives and unique experiences of aging lesbians, along with those of the larger LGBT community, therefore such matters remain poorly understood.  Regardless, insuring any dialogue surrounding the needs of older lesbians must underscore their resilience - which for many has included becoming actively engaged as advocates for visibility and change - especially during the late 1960s and Stonewall Inn revolution, as …

The Information In Aggregate Data, David Steel, Eric Beh, Raymond Chambers

Professor David Steel

Ecological inference attempts to draw conclusions concerning individual-level relationships using data in the form of aggregates for groups in the population. The groups are often geographically defined. A fundamental statistical issue is how much information aggregate data contain concerning the relationships and parameters that we are trying to estimate. The information affects the standard errors of estimates as well as the power of any tests of hypothesis. It also affects the ability to tell, from the aggregate data, which different models under consideration are supported by the data. In this chapter likelihood-based methods are considered. We show in general how …

In Search Of A Good Rotation Pattern, David Steel, Craig Mclaren Jun 2013

In Search Of A Good Rotation Pattern, David Steel, Craig Mclaren

Professor David Steel

A key element in the design of a repeated sample survey is the rotation pattern, which affects the variability of the time series of survey estimates and the seasonally adjusted and trend estimates produced from them. This paper considers the choice of rotation pattern for seasonally adjusted and trend estimates obtained from a repeated survey, using XII based methods.

Drug Trafficking In The Pacific, Charles Hawksley

Charles M Hawksley

This case study examines the organized trafficking of drugs into the Pacific region. The Pacific is small in population but massive in area. Relative to the size of states, there are significanl movement of drugs in the region. The flow is generally from the developing to the developed world for heroin and cOCc1ine, but the ecstasy and amphetamine market is more mixed, with manufacture in Europe, South East Asia and Pacific Island states. Dating In Landscape, Archaeology, Richard Roberts, Zenobia Jacobs

Richard G Roberts

A common need in archaeology is for objects and events of interest to be dated, so that they can be arranged in the correct temporal sequence. Here we briefly review several methods available to the archaeologist to assist in age determination of the "target" object or event-comprehensive treatments of the subject are given by Aitken 0990, 1999), Wagner (998), and Walker (2005).

Ethnicity And Class, Evan Poata-Smith

Evan S. Te Ahu Poata-Smith

Class does not exist as an isolated dimension of our social lives. A range of factors such as ethnicity, nationality, gender and sexual orientation intersect and collectively shape our experiences of class. Furthermore, as active and conscious historical beings, we experience class and class struggles through our own inherited set of cultural values and social expectations.

He Pokeke Uenuku I Tu Ai: The Evolution Of Contemporary Maori Protest, Evan Poata-Smith

Evan S. Te Ahu Poata-Smith

Historically, the intensity and momenlUm of Maori political activism has never been consistent. Upturns in protest activity are followed by downturns in struggle and vice versa. 1lle 1970s were witness to a dramatic upsurge in Maori activism which had a profound effect on New Zcaland society. The political turbulence created in the wake of the 1975 land march on Parliament, Bastion Point, Raglan and the regular protests at Waitangi once again revealed the exploitative and oppressive foundations on which capitalism had been established in Aolearoa. The decline of working-class movements internationally and the fisc of the New Right coupled with …
