Empty Ritual: Young-Adult Stepchildren's Perceptions Of The Remarriage Ceremony, Leslie Baxter, Dawn Braithwaite, Jody Kellas
Dawn O. Braithwaite
This qualitative study investigated 80 young-adult stepchildren’s talk about one of their parents’ remarriage ceremony. The remarriage event was celebrated in six types of ritual enactments, five of which celebrated the couple’s marriage and one of which was family-centered in its celebration of the beginning of the new stepfamily. Three factors led stepchildren to find the remarriage ceremony empty: (i) a ritual form that was too traditional or not traditional enough; (ii) a ritual enactment that failed to pay homage to either the stepchild’s family of origin or the stepfamily as a unit; and (iii) a ritual enactment that failed …

A Childe Bibliography: A Hand-List Of The Works Of Vere Gordon Childe, Terry Irving, Peter Gathercole
A Childe Bibliography: A Hand-List Of The Works Of Vere Gordon Childe, Terry Irving, Peter Gathercole
Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)
A hand-list devoted to the published writings of Vere Gordon Childe (1892-1957). It includes political writings, letters to newspapers, and reviews, as well as his books, articles and contributions to books. It covers his Australian years as well his academic career in Britain. Because its aim is to create an historical record of both Childe's work and the continual contemporary interest in his ideas, the list is arranged year by year to highlight his productivity and the periods when attention to his work was greatest. There are four sections: (i) books and monographs; (ii) articles and chapters; (iii) reviews; and …

Paul A Soderdahl
The rapidly expanding digital library network Crisis, Tragedy and Recovery (CTR) was funded in 2009 by the National Science Foundation through a three year grant. CRT captures and stores information for spontaneous events so users can access, search, analyze, and study these collections and learn from events and tragedies that happen around the world and across cultures and languages.
The panel will discuss the need for this distributed digital library and the project’s objectives, as well as some of the challenges faced. Topics will include lessons learned, best practices, and the connections between automated text mining, storytelling technologies, expert recommendations, …

Maria Ibanez
This project presents rent models for flexible, industrial, retail and office properties in the Unites States. Panel data are used covering the largest fifty metropolitan areas in the U.S. for 27 years (1982-2009) to analyze the determinants of rents.
A Limited Engagement: Mexico And Its Diaspora, Roger D. Waldinger
A Limited Engagement: Mexico And Its Diaspora, Roger D. Waldinger
Roger D Waldinger
Responding to migrants’ many, ongoing involvements with their home communities, sending states have increasingly adopted policies of diaspora engagement, seeking both to retain the emigrants’ loyalties and shape their attachments so as best to meet home state leaders’ goals. This paper seeks to gain traction on the politics of diaspora engagement by studying two contrasting aspects of the Mexican experience – expatriate voting, a relatively new development, and provision of the matrícula consular, a long-standing component of traditional consular services, though one that has recently been transformed. Focusing on the complex set of interactions linking migrants, sending states, and receiving …
Do Profit Maximisers Take Cold Showers? Another Look At Protection And Technical Efficiency, Neil Campbell, Jeffrey Kline
Do Profit Maximisers Take Cold Showers? Another Look At Protection And Technical Efficiency, Neil Campbell, Jeffrey Kline
Neil Campbell
In this paper we consider whether a 'cold shower' is possible if the firm we are analysing is a conventional neoclassical profit-maximising firm facing competitively determined prices. In the context of this analysis, the term 'cold shower' refers to a situation where the removal of a protective subsidy induces investment in a cost-reducing technology. First we show that if the investment lowers marginal cost everywhere, then our firm will never respond to the removal of the subsidy by making the investment. We then use this result to carefully construct examples where the investment does not lower marginal cost everywhere. These …

Predicting Police Support For A Gang Prevention Program, Marc Ruffinengo
Predicting Police Support For A Gang Prevention Program, Marc Ruffinengo
Marc A. Ruffinengo
A gap is present in the police performance literature that exists due to the use of performance measures that are more in line with the reactive aspect of the police mission. The present study seeks to determine which individual officer and departmental characteristics are more indicative of tolerance and attitudinal compatibility with a proactive crime prevention program. Using surveys from police officers participating in the GREAT (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program, this study focuses on identifying officer and departmental characteristics that are indicative of tolerance and belief (i.e. support) in the potential for the program to reduce gang membership …

Photos And Field Notes From Visual Research, Kenneth Tunnell
Kenneth Tunnell
This paper describes ongoing visual field research by focusing especially on its self-reflective and auto-ethnographic constituents. The presentation relies on photographs, field notes and personal encounters from the field as the process of doing research is described. Recognizing the simbiotic order of the personal and political, the author details confrontations and emotions from ongoing efforts at recording visually.

Using Evidence-Basedresearch To Redirectaconversation: Newspapers’ Coverage Of Strategies To Address College Binge Drinking, Michelle Campo, Natoshia Askelson, Mary Slonske, Teresa Mastin
Michelle L. Campo
This study examines selected newspapers’ coverage of college binge drinking while also serving as an example of evidence-based practices that can be of use to public relations practitioners and health care professionals working to draw attention to important factors that are not being addressed in either public or policy conversations related to this issue. We examine newspaper coverage in 32 newspapers from 1997 to 2006 to determine which strategies to address college binge drinking are being covered and which of those are evidence-based and implemented by colleges. The mix of individual versus environmental strategies was examined based on Social Cognitive …

Cooperation Before Contract: The Law And Policy Of Expenses Incurred During Negotiations In Comparative Perspective, Luigi Russi
Cooperation Before Contract: The Law And Policy Of Expenses Incurred During Negotiations In Comparative Perspective, Luigi Russi
Luigi Russi
Pending negotiations for a contract, one party may begin to incur expenses in fulfilment of the proposed economic operation in anticipation of the finalisation of a formal contract, which is a common practice in many settings, from building and lease contracts to contracts for services in general. This book, therefore, focuses on controversies that may arise when an expected contract collapses after one party withdraws from negotiations, with an ensuing attempt to determine what liability, if any, the withdrawing party should face regarding expenses incurred by the other. The laws of England and Italy, along with several non-legislative codifications – …

Inequitable Jeopardy: Exploring The Criminality And Culpability Of Child Sex Trafficking Victims, Joan A. Reid, Shayne Jones
Inequitable Jeopardy: Exploring The Criminality And Culpability Of Child Sex Trafficking Victims, Joan A. Reid, Shayne Jones
Joan A Reid, Ph.D.
While the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 and its reauthorizations in 2003, 2005, 2008 safeguard all prostituted minors under the age of 18 as vulnerable victims of child sex trafficking unable to legally consent to being trafficked, local systems continue to treat U.S. minors as criminals. In such instances, the prostitution of a minor is categorized as a public nuisance crime by local law enforcement and juvenile justice agencies and the minor is arrested and adjudicated on prostitution charges. A review of the historical, neurological, and developmental vulnerabilities typical of child sex trafficking victims entrapped by sex traffickers reveals …
Homeland Calling? Political And Social Connectivity Across Borders, Roger D. Waldinger, Nelson Lim
Homeland Calling? Political And Social Connectivity Across Borders, Roger D. Waldinger, Nelson Lim
Roger D Waldinger
This paper seeks to understand the paradox of large-scale migrant connectivity with the significant others still at home, alongside far more limited engagement with the homeland polity left behind. We argue that, in the expatriate situation, homeland political involvement yields a decidedly unfavourable mix of costs and benefits for most migrants. On the one hand, the costs of expatriate political involvement are higher than the costs that would be entailed when “in country”; on the other hand, the home state can do much less for migrants than the state where they actually live. While the great majority of migrants consequently …
Limitations Of Functional Analysis: The Case For Including Valued Outcomes Analysis In The Investigation Of Difficult Behaviour, Vicki Bitsika
Limitations Of Functional Analysis: The Case For Including Valued Outcomes Analysis In The Investigation Of Difficult Behaviour, Vicki Bitsika
Vicki Bitsika
Effective behaviour change is based on understanding the reasons for difficult behaviour. However, current functional analytic technology is often limited in its effectiveness in the clinical setting because the focus is on labelling and classifying behavioural outcomes rather than conducting a detailed analysis of the manner in which these outcomes assist the client to operate in the environment. The effectiveness of existing functional analytic techniques might be enhanced by moving the focus of the investigation from identifying the consequent variables that impact on behaviour to systematically exploring client–environment interactions as well as the manner in which the client experiences the …

Stress, Anxiety And Depression Among Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Vicki Bitsika, Christopher Sharpley
Vicki Bitsika
In a replication of a previous study of the incidence and contributing factors in anxiety, depression and stress in Victorian parents of a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a sample of 107 Gold Coast parents completed a questionnaire that assessed their demographic backgrounds, anxiety and depression scores on standardised inventories, and also tapped several aspects of those factors that may have contributed to their wellbeing. Over 90% of parents reported that they were sometimes unable to deal effectively with their child's behaviour. Nearly half of the participants were severely anxious and nearly two thirds were clinically depressed. Factors that …
Treating The Client Rather Than The Symptoms: Moving Beyond Manualised Treatments In Psychotherapy, Vicki Bitsika, Christopher Sharpley
Treating The Client Rather Than The Symptoms: Moving Beyond Manualised Treatments In Psychotherapy, Vicki Bitsika, Christopher Sharpley
Vicki Bitsika
There have been some challenges to the reliance upon data from randomised controlled clinical trials when identifying ‘evidence-based’ psychotherapy treatments. Similarly, data show that use of treatment manuals does not result in uniform and beneficial outcomes, that some evidence-based treatments are little better than non-specific counselling and that the search for those therapies or components that are effective has been largely fruitless. In an attempt to extend the debate about evidence-based treatments and drawing upon those aspects of cognitive and behavioural therapies that have been shown to be effective in most settings, this article describes valued outcomes analysis and therapy …
"But I'M Not Really Bad": Using An Idiographic Versus A Nomothetic Approach To Understand The Reasons For Difficult Behaviour In Children, Vicki Bitsika
Vicki Bitsika
The number of students who are identified as experiencing behavioural difficulties in the mainstream school setting is growing. However, current efforts by teachers to address these behavioural difficulties are seriously limited because of lack of training in the procedures for assessing and working with difficult behaviour. This paper will argue that the apparent failure of traditional "behaviour modification" in producing positive changes in difficult behaviour lies in its prescriptive application of general strategies to specific student problems. This approach to behaviour change is ineffective because it is not based on an understanding of the reasons for difficult behaviour. The functional …

Assessment And Treatment Of Fire-Setters, Rebekah Doley, Katarina Fritzon

Extract: I am malicious because I am miserable. -Frankenstein, Mary Shelley Within clinical literature there has been an assumption that the above quote typifies a large proportion of individuals who deliberately commit arson. In other words, that psychological disorders of some kind can be found in the majority of such persons (Geller, Fisher, & Moynihan, 1992). For example, early conceptualisations of the condition pyromania meant that any individual who set more than one fire was considered to suffer from an 'irresistible impulse'- merely for the fact that they did not resist the impulse to set a fire. Now, however, a …
