Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
Utah State University Libraries hosts a thriving institutional repository, DigitalCommons@USU. The Library and Physics department developed a partnership to transcend traditional repository structures and emphasizes faculty research groups within the department.
This poster session highlights the features of the University's repository and describes what is required to establish a similar structure at an academic institution. We anticipate several long-term benefits of this new structure, which benefits students, the department, and the library.

"Google is the most interesting institution in the world right now. It is working its way into our consciousness and daily lives at a remarkable rate that is unmatched by any company in human history. And it is doing so in a fairly novel way through the aggregation of our choices. We are choosing to use Google every day. We are not forced or seduced into using it" according to Siva Vaidhyanathan. This presentation may help you to be understood what Google is and how it dominates Internet. Happy reading

The transition to electronic resources and the changing role of the collection development librarian are having a tremendous impact on the manner by which libraries select and acquire new materials. The goal of this research project was to further elucidate the current trends of collection development policies in members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) as well as gage current use and future efficacy. The survey was designed and sent to librarians responsible for collection development at university-affiliated ARL libraries in order to obtain a current picture of academic collection development policies, and how they are changing due to …

Western Libraries Presentations
Western Libraries, an academic library with an FTE of 34,000, and Ingram Coutts, have worked together to implement an e-preferred Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) program at Western Libraries. This implementation has required collaboration between Coutts and Western Libraries collection librarians to develop effective profiles. These profiles allow the PDA collection to be filtered according to subject and non-subject parameters.
There are several aspects of this project that make it unique. First, every e-book that is selected by a PDA-preferred profile will automatically be loaded into the catalogue for PDA. Patrons will trigger a purchase if the book is accessed twice. …

Using Technology And Online Counseling: The Future Is Now, Oscar T. Mcknight, Gregory Pollock, Kerri Carmichael
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
This research addresses how technology is transforming the world; specifically, how we live, communicate and interact. Two questions posed for counselors: first, should counselors avoid, minimize, maximize or embrace the online environment; and second, how does on-line counseling fit within the profession. In addition, reviewed are professional standards, certifications and in-practice issues. Findings suggest that counselors should embrace new technologies and assess best-practice protocols.

In this session, the presenters will discuss their roles in e-publishing and their respective university presses and library publishing programs. How have their libraries reorganized to provide resources for supporting these new roles? The daily work of an e-publishing librarian will be reviewed, including an overview of working with Digital Commons …

Designing International Institutions For Global Security, Rupayan Gupta
Fall 2012 Faculty Showcase
This talk focuses on the challenges inherent in designing international institutions for global security. The area of inquiry is interdisciplinary in nature, incorporating insights from economics, international relations, and mathematics (game theory). It is argued that this line of research would benefit from greater incorporation of techniques from bargaining theory and mechanism design. An agenda is proposed for interdisciplinary collaboration and some interesting results are presented from author’s published and ongoing research.
