Assessing The Strategic Credibility Of Special Collections, Erin Passehl, Rick A. Stoddart
Assessing The Strategic Credibility Of Special Collections, Erin Passehl, Rick A. Stoddart
Rick A Stoddart
In this time of often precarious funding at many colleges and universities, any case that can be made to illustrate how a department strategically fits into the overall university mission is not only worth merit, but an essential survival technique. This “strategic credibility” within the university is a vital form of currency in determining institution-wide resources prioritization, collaboration opportunities between organizational units, and overall direction of departments. This paper presents a case study of academic special collections in the Northwest and examines the methods these departments use to demonstrate value to the university. This paper considers how well do special …

The Role Of Information Literacy In Service Learning Courses: A Case Study And Best Practices, Christopher A. Sweet
The Role Of Information Literacy In Service Learning Courses: A Case Study And Best Practices, Christopher A. Sweet
Christopher A. Sweet
Service Learning is a quickly growing movement within higher education that empowers students to utilize classroom knowledge to solve a problem or effect a change within their local community. Information Literacy is critical for getting students to understand the “why” and “how” that should ground all service learning projects.
This presentation will begin with an overview of the service learning movement. Next, I will present a case study of my experiences as an embedded librarian in an Environmental Studies Senior Seminar. The presentation will conclude with a summary of emerging best practices for incorporating information literacy into service learning courses.

When you’ve made a serious mistake, sometimes it is best to step forward and confess before the government regulators find out on their own. The federal Stark Law, governing physician self-referral, provides a mechanism for voluntary disclosing a violation, but using that option requires a carefully crafted game plan.

The Cyprus Peace Process:Alternative Power-Sharing Designs, Neophytos Loizides
The Cyprus Peace Process:Alternative Power-Sharing Designs, Neophytos Loizides
Neophytos Loizides
The presentation will focus on the “d’Hondt system”, a Northern Irish approach to power-sharing which has contributed to broad inclusive coalitions and political stability in the province since 2007. By including all major parties to government, d’Hondt skips a problematic and time-consuming aspect of consociationalism that of forming inter-ethnic majority coalitions. The presentation will then make a twofold argument, firstly that the d’Hondt executive would likely ‘replace’ current cross-voting proposals in the Cypriot negotiations and secondly that the d’Hondt system could be more suitable and effective in capitalizing on the specific advantages of Cyprus as a federation. Finally, the presentation …

Institutional Repositories (IRs) provide a digital ‘storehouse’ for academic institutions to house a wide variety of scholarly material created by students, faculty, and administrators. They also provide a readily accessible depository for selected archival material, video and still images, current news and events, procedural and policy guidelines, and other information that benefits the university community and other users, including the public. …
