Gretchen Rae Beach

The purpose of this proposal is to identify the need for establishing an Institutional Repository at Marshall University to facilitate the collection, preservation, and dissemination of the intellectual output of the students, faculty, and administrative offices of the University. Institutional Repositories (IRs) provide a digital ‘storehouse’ for academic institutions to house a wide variety of scholarly material created by students, faculty, and administrators. They also provide a readily accessible depository for selected archival material, video and still images, current news and events, procedural and policy guidelines, and other information that benefits the university community and other users, including the public. …

Introduction/Theory

The persistent and well-documented problem of health inequalities has challenged public health researchers since the relationship between income and health was first established. In the context of austerity measures leading to public-sector funding cuts, and faced with continuing, even growing, inequalities, more innovative, community-based solutions have gained prominence. With this in mind, social enterprises - businesses which, rather than distributing profits to shareholders, re-invest their profits in fulfilment of a social mission – could prove to be a potentially innovative response. Awareness During Narrative Comprehension And Potential Acquisition Of Aspectual Meanings By Non-Native English Speakers, Andreas Schramm Jun 2012

Awareness During Narrative Comprehension And Potential Acquisition Of Aspectual Meanings By Non-Native English Speakers, Andreas Schramm

Andreas Schramm

In second language acquisition there has been sustained interest in input processing and the role of cognitive resources. Much of it has been on form within meaningful context, not semantic meanings. This study investigates cognitive resources readers employ during comprehension and potential acquisition of aspectual meanings and their pragmatic use in narratives. Data from 24 college age non-native English speakers on the cognitive status of semantic content is examined to determine whether awareness occurred in STM and intake during inferencing in STM and LTM. Questions are discussed whether aspect had been acquired before or reading triggered awareness and incidental intake.

Disillusionment In Afghanistan. A Five Country Study Into Plots By Soldier-Authors, Esmeralda Kleinreesink

Esmeralda Kleinreesink

It is often said that the majority of stories written by war veterans in the 20th century are disillusionment plots. But is that still the case in the 21st century? Are young men and women still going into, for example, Afghanistan with high ideals that are shattered during their deployment, and write books about their disillusionment? In this paper, the preliminary results are presented from a study into military books. Based on Friedman’s plot theory, this study compares all 54 autobiographical books published between 2001 and 2010 by Afghanistan veterans in three different languages from five different countries (the Netherlands, …
