The Relationship Of Hope And Strength's Self-Efficacy To The Social Change Model Of Leadership, Natasha Chapman Dec 2010

The Relationship Of Hope And Strength's Self-Efficacy To The Social Change Model Of Leadership, Natasha Chapman

Natasha H Chapman

The social change model of leadership (SCM) is a widely used leadership model in higher education. StrengthsQuest is conceptually similar to the individual values of the SCM in its aim to identify and grow individual talents. This model is

based on the idea that individuals perform at higher levels when they build upon their identified talents (Clifton & Harter, 2003). Prior studies have not examined the relationship of hope or one’s belief in their identified StrengthsQuest talents to the individual values of the SCM. This study examines that relationship using the adult-trait hope and strengths self-efficacy scales. The relationship between …

Human Rights In Camera, Sharon Sliwinski Dec 2010

Human Rights In Camera, Sharon Sliwinski

Sharon Sliwinski

From the fundamental rights proclaimed in the American and French declarations of independence to the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Hannah Arendt’s furious critiques, the definition of what it means to be human has been hotly debated. But the history of human rights—and their abuses—is also a richly illustrated one. Following this picture trail, Human Rights In Camera takes an innovative approach by examining the visual images that have accompanied human rights struggles and the passionate responses people have had to them.

A Preliminary Assessment Of The Potential For 'Team Science' In Doe Energy Innovation Hubs And Energy Frontier Research Centers, Craig Boardman, Branco Ponomariov

Craig Boardman

President Obama has called for the development of new energy technologies to address our national energy needs and restore US economic competitiveness. In response, the Department of Energy has established new R&D modalities for energy research and development designed to facilitate collaboration across disciplinary, institutional, and sectoral boundaries. In this research note, we provide a preliminary assessment of the potential for essential mechanisms for coordinated problem solving among diverse actors within two new modalities at the DOE: Energy Innovation Hubs and Energy Frontier Research Centers.

Impaired Perceptual Judgement At Low Blood Alcohol Concentrations, Tim Friedman, S Robinson, G Yelland Dec 2010

Impaired Perceptual Judgement At Low Blood Alcohol Concentrations, Tim Friedman, S Robinson, G Yelland

Dr Tim Friedman

Males and females show different patterns of cognitive impairment when blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) are high. To investigate whether gender differences persist at low BACs, cognitive impairment was tested in 21 participants (11 female, 10 male) using a brief computerized perceptual judgment task that provides error rate and response time data. Participants consumed a measured dose of alcohol (average peak BAC: females: 0.052 g/100 mL, males: 0.055 g/100 mL), and were tested at four time points spanning both the rising and falling limbs of the BAC curve, in addition to a prealcohol time point. Comparisons were made against performance of …

A Review Of Social And Economic Drivers Of Community Acceptance And Adoption Of Decentralised Water Systems, Aditi Mankad, Sorada Tapsuwan Dec 2010

A Review Of Social And Economic Drivers Of Community Acceptance And Adoption Of Decentralised Water Systems, Aditi Mankad, Sorada Tapsuwan

Sorada Tapsuwan

The aim of this paper is to highlight key social and economic drivers crucial to understanding community acceptance and adoption of decentralised water systems. The review focused on social science literature pertaining to alternative forms of household water, with an emphasis on research examining decentralised water acceptance. Researchers consistently reported that most communities were open to alternative water sources for domestic applications; however, this was highly dependent upon the level of personal contact with the water. Acceptance and adoption of alternative water technology, such as decentralised systems, was influenced by risk perception, water culture, and threat perception. Motivational drivers were …

Using Examiner Assignment To Estimate Causal Effects Of Ssdi Receipt, Nicole Maestas, Kathleen Mullen, Alexander Strand Dec 2010

Using Examiner Assignment To Estimate Causal Effects Of Ssdi Receipt, Nicole Maestas, Kathleen Mullen, Alexander Strand

Nicole Maestas

We present the first estimates of the causal effect of SSDI receipt on the labor supply generalizable to the entire population of program entrants in the present day system. We take advantage of a unique workload management database to match Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) applicants to disability examiners, and use natural variation in examiners’ allowance rates to estimate the labor supply effects of SSDI. Because applicants are randomly assigned to examiners (conditional on observable characteristics), examiner-specific allowance rates can be used to instrument for the allowance decision in a labor supply equation contrasting denied vs. allowed applicants. We find …

The Status Quo Bias And Counterterrorism Detention, Greg Mcneal Dec 2010

The Status Quo Bias And Counterterrorism Detention, Greg Mcneal

Greg McNeal

Counterterrorism detention policy in the United States is a mess. Commentators on both sides of the political spectrum have decried the U.S. approach. Those on the left have criticized the arbitrary and unfair nature of U.S. policy; they argue that detention policy has unfairly trampled on the rights of individuals, producing results that are inconsistent and, perhaps, counterproductive, especially in the eyes of U.S. allies and the Muslim world. Others have approached this question from a security perspective, decrying the granting of privileges to those who fail to follow the rules of civilized nations yet then demand the protection of …

Marie Y Savundranayagam

StoryCorps’ Memory Loss Initiative was designed to gather oral histories of people with memory loss. This study investigated the StoryCorps interview experience for storytellers who self identify with early stage memory loss and the persons who interviewed them. StoryCorps interviews took place in Milwaukee, Chicago, and New York. Follow-up interviews were conducted with 42 persons with memory loss, along with 27 family members who participated in the StoryCorps interviews. Results revealed that the StoryCorps experience was a meaningful activity that allowed participants to acknowledge the beauty of the present moment, to reflect and engage in meaningful conversations, to re-affirm both …

The Mordida´S Game: How Institutions Incentive Corruption, Rodolfo Sarsfield Dec 2010

The Mordida´S Game: How Institutions Incentive Corruption, Rodolfo Sarsfield

Rodolfo Sarsfield

The study at micro level about in which way individuals’ micro-motives and behaviors influence on an effective rule of law is a deficit in the literature. The analysis of the microfoundations of the law ´s empire is absent in the field of legal studies. In this way, most explanations presented to elucidate the performance of the rule of law has been presented at macro level, emulating properties of countries, such as wealth (Barro 2000; Joireman 2004), ethnic fragmentation (Hayo and Voigt 2005; Hansson and Olsson 2006), religion (Barro 2000; Hayo and Voigt 2005), British legal or colonial tradition (Blake and …

Racial Differences In Multigenerational Living Arrangements In 1910, Cheryl Elman, Andrew London Dec 2010

Racial Differences In Multigenerational Living Arrangements In 1910, Cheryl Elman, Andrew London

Cheryl Elman

We explore racial differences in multigenerational living arrangements in 1910, focusing on trigenerational kin structures. Coresidence across generations represents a public function of the family, and we observe this across different ages or life-course stages through which adults came to be at risk for providing simultaneous household support for multiple generations of kin dependents. Using data from the 1.4 percent 1910 Integrated Public Use Microdata Sample, our comparisons adjust for marital turnover, including widow(er)hood/divorce and remarriage, as rates are known to be historically higher among African Americans in this period. Across subgroups defined by age and sex, we find that …

Fair Trade And Fair Trade Certification Of Food And Agricultural Commodities: Promises, Pitfalls, And Possibilities, Sarasij Majumder Dec 2010

Fair Trade And Fair Trade Certification Of Food And Agricultural Commodities: Promises, Pitfalls, And Possibilities, Sarasij Majumder

Sarasij Majumder

The global circulation of food and agricultural commodities is increasingly influenced by the ethical choices of Western consumers and activists who want to see a socially and environmentally sustainable trade regime in place. These desires have culminated in the formation of an elaborate system of rules, which govern the physical and social conditions of food production and circulation, reflected in transnational ethical regimes such as fair trade. Fair trade operates through certifying producer communities with sustainable production methods and socially just production relationships. By examining interdisciplinary academic engagements with fair trade, we argue that fair trade certification is a transnational …

Assessing Facilitator Performance As An Influence On Student Satisfaction, David May, Scotty Dunlap

David May

Growth in class size within the online environment has resulted in a facilitator model in which an instructor teaches the class with the assistance of facilitators who interact with students in smaller groups. This research sought to determine the effectiveness of a structured performance evaluation for facilitators and the correlation to student satisfaction.
