This article discusses the work of the American Library Association (ALA) Special Task Force on Sustainability, which identified 52 recommendations, including the adoption of sustainability as a core value of librarianship. The group aims to promote libraries as catalysts, connectors, and conveners to promote sustainability, resilience, and regeneration. The Task Force is guided by the concept of the triple bottom line, which states that an organization's practices must be not only economically feasible but also socially equitable and environmentally sound. The article also provides examples of how libraries engage in sustainable practices to support the cities and towns they serve.

In this introduction, the coeditors of this issue introduce, discuss, and provide a relevant framework for the work found herein. Special attention is given to the language of disability and the preferences of those both within and outside of the disability community. A brief explanation is given for each of the theoretical frameworks used to model disability in the existing literature to help provide important context for this issue. Lastly, we include an introduction to each of the articles and highlight some of the common themes they reveal.

Outreach Librarian, Monika Antonelli and University Archivist Librarian, Daardi Sizemore will show an excerpt of their 50 minute documentary film, Two Weeks in May, which documents student anti-Vietnam War protests on the Minnesota State University, Mankato campus in May 1972. The presenters will share their experiences creating the film including: timeline, funding, personnel, film production, use of archival material, and acquisition of new archival material. The film highlights historical events at the University and in the city of Mankato, and demonstrates the importance of student engagement with social and political issues.

My goal in writing this chapter is to use critical disability theory grounded in my lived experience to offer some possibilities for improving the working conditions of library employees with disabilities. I begin by providing an overview of some mainstream and critical perspectives on disability. The achievement gap “refers to a difference between the academic achievement of linguistic and ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students from low socioeconomic status backgrounds, and female students, and either the mainstream student population in general or the white student population more specifically” (Odekon, 2015, p. 7). Libraries entrust negotiating authority to consortia upon the assumption that consortia can exercise greater “buying power” than individual institutions when dealing with vendors, because of greater scale. The prevailing mythology is that consortial deals simply must be better deals than libraries could secure on their own. In this presentation, the author questions the presumption that scale necessarily leads to better deals for libraries. Rather, library agency, as exercised in direct negotiations, can be more effective than scale for the purpose of securing the best possible deals. Librarians in many types of libraries frequently find themselves positioned as instructors in formal and informal educational settings. Librarians can help ensure that learner needs are better defined and addressed by gaining basic competency in instructional design (ID), an intentional process used to create effective, efficient educational and training programs. Additionally, instructional design skills have the potential to benefit librarians in nonteaching roles. This paper examines existing library literature to determine how librarians can benefit from ID skills and to identify core ID competencies for the profession, and suggests opportunities to investigate how librarians might best acquire these skills.

Based on a study of the students' own voices, outlined are responsive actions academic libraries can take to make Hispanic students feel more welcomed and comfortable. Since use of libraries is positively related to student retention, it is important that we understand our own students' experiences and recommendations.

In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the Minnesota Vikings Training Camp at Mankato, University Archives staff conducted an oral history project to document Vikings Training Camp at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Over 130 fans, community partners, Minnesota State University employees, and alumni Viking players agreed to share their Vikings Training Camp stories. We blitzed Training Camp at Mankato with an iPad on a stick and snapped up quick three-question interviews.
