Advancements In Characterization Of Ancient Potteries From Southeast Asia: A Review Of Analytical Techniques, Chitnarong Sirisathitkul

Makara Journal of Science

Ancient potteries offer valuable information regarding technological advancements, life dynamics, cultural diversity, and trade routes in the past. Earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain from Southeast Asia have been characterized using several analytical techniques, as reviewed in this article. Fluorescent and diffracted X-rays give rise to elemental and phase compositions, respectively. Examination of molecular bonds requires vibrational spectroscopy, which is useful for the identification of organic materials in ancient potteries. With the advent of portable X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectrometry, on-site analysis of archeological ceramics is now possible. For in-depth analysis, synchrotron light sources can provide new insights into artifacts through X-ray …

Makara Journal of Science

Amino acids and their complexes are organic or semiorganic materials that have attracted considerable attention because they can be easily used in optical storage devices. DL-alanine is one of the rare amino acids that crystallizes in anoncentrosymmetric group. This article demonstrates how DL-alanine potassium dichromate (DAPC) single crystals have shown sufficient growth. DAPC crystals were analyzed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction. Using thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry, this work also examined the melting point, thermal stability, decomposition point, and other thermal parameters of the DAPC crystals. Results show that the decomposition point …

Electro-Optical Effect Of 4-N-Alkyl-Sulfanyl-4' Isothiocyanate-Biphenyl Liquid Crystal Homologous Series Under Terahertz Frequency: A Theoretical Approach, Yogesh Kumar, Narinder Kumar

Makara Journal of Science

This work presented the electro-optical effect of the homologous series 4-n-alkyl-sulfanyl-4'-isothiocyanate-biphenyl (N1SC13H8-SH2n+1Cn) under an electric field with terahertz (THz) frequency. The increase in alkyl sulfanyl chain length reduces the birefringence but increases the order parameter in THz frequency. An inverse relationship exists between the birefringence and order parameter. Meanwhile, the increase in alkyl sulfanyl chain length increases the refractive index with an even–odd effect. Birefringence, refractive index, order parameter, and director angle show an even–odd effect in the THz frequency range. The calculation is performed between 1 and 1,200 THz frequency. The isothiocyanate stretching corresponding to …

Makara Journal of Science

We used photoacoustic imaging (PAI) to visualize and compare acoustic intensity levels in pneumonia-affected and healthy chicken lungs. After histological confirmation of pneumonia, the samples were scanned and subjected to a 532-nm diode laser in a photoacoustic imaging system. The acoustic intensity level of pneumonia-affected tissue was examined and compared with that of healthy lung samples. The optimum laser frequency and duty cycle for imaging the samples were 17 kHz and 30%, respectively. The acoustic intensity levels of pneumonia-affected tissue and healthy lungs were −82.5 ± 1.8 dB and −79.9 ± 1.3 dB, respectively. We found that a simple PAI …

Carbon Dioxide-Induced Corrosion Of Aisi 4140 Steel In Acidified Artificial Geothermal Brine, Anawati Anawati, Rayhan Izzat, Riene Kaelamanda Pragitta, Rafli Ihsan Hernandi

Makara Journal of Science

Carbon dioxide (CO2)-induced corrosion often occurs in the structural materials of geothermal industry. The presence of CO2 influences the formation of various corrosion products. This research investigates the effect of dissolved CO2 in acidic brines on the corrosion behavior of AISI 4140 steel at atmospheric pressure. The brines were the standard brine, Ca-free brine, and high-salinity brine. The corrosion behavior was studied using electrochemical and immersion tests. A cyclic polarization test showed that the corrosion rate was higher in dissolved CO2 brine than in non-CO2 brine, and an immersion test demonstrated a similar result. …

Parton Distribution Functions For Pseudoscalar Mesons In The Confining Effective Chiral Quark Theory, Parada Tobel Paraduan Hutauruk, Seung-Il Nam

Makara Journal of Science

This review paper presents the gluon, sea, and valence quark distributions of the pseudoscalar (PS) mesons. The calculations of the parton structure of PS mesons are performed using the Bethe-Salpeter equation—Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (BSE-NJL) model, which offers a clear description of the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (D SB) of the low-energy non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD), with the help of the Schwinger proper-time regularization scheme that simulates the color QCD confinement. Our results for the dynamical quark mass—which emerged from the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (S SB)—are generated via the chiral condensate in the chiral limit and beyond. Results for the valence parton …

Makara Journal of Science

The present scenario expresses the electro-optical effect of abinary mixture of MBBA and PAA liquid crystal studied under the impact of the electric field in THz frequency. The binary mixture has a negative order parameter, negative birefringence, and a nematic phase stability under such an electric field. The refractive index remains constant at high THz frequency. The director angle is sensitive to THz frequency, contributing to the maximum fluctuation. The atomic contribution of a binary mixture is approximately equal to the molecular contribution. The binary mixture has a remarkably high bandgap. The C-H, O-C, C-N atom stretching, and wagging of …

Makara Journal of Science

Owing to its successful application to complex molecular systems, computational density functional theory (DFT) has been used to study the effect of an electric field on the molecular polarizability and HOMO–LUMO gap of 1-phenyl-4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}benzene (1) and its fluoro-, chloro-, and cyano- derivatives, namely, 1-fluoro-4-(4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}phenyl)benzene (2), 1-chloro-4-(4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}phenyl)benzene (3), and 4-(4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}phenyl)benzonitrile (4). These molecules belong to the family of nematic liquid crystals with three rings: two benzene and one cyclohexane. Furthermore, two DFT approaches, namely, B3LYP and M062X, have been used to examine the results obtained. This study reveals a remarkable feature: the polarizability of these molecules follows nearly a step function …
