Measurement Of Low Temperature Thermal Properties Of Microcalorimeters Using Johnson Noise Thermometry, Dain Bassett Mar 2014

Measurement Of Low Temperature Thermal Properties Of Microcalorimeters Using Johnson Noise Thermometry, Dain Bassett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Calorimetric measurments and thermal transport measurments through a-SixNy suspended membranes have been performed to further the understanding of low temperature thin film thermal transport, and understand the interesting physics present within an amorphous dielectric material. The thermal properties of several calorimeters have been measured to understand the geometric dependence on transport phenomenon. We analyze and compare our results with observations of previous measurements, and with those indicating quantum limited thermal transport. We see strong indications of changes to the physical mechanism transporting heat through these materials as temperature changes from 50 mK to 2 K. We have …

Nanoscale Thermoelectrics: A Study Of The Absolute Seebeck Coefficient Of Thin Films, Sarah J. Mason Jan 2014

Nanoscale Thermoelectrics: A Study Of The Absolute Seebeck Coefficient Of Thin Films, Sarah J. Mason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The worlds demand for energy is ever increasing. Likewise, the environmental impact of climate change due generating that energy through combustion of fossil fuels is increasingly alarming. Due to these factors new sources of renewable energies are constantly being sought out. Thermoelectric devices have the ability to generate clean, renewable, energy out of waste heat. However promising that is, their inefficiency severely inhibits applicability and practical use. The usefulness of a thermoelectric material increases with the dimensionless quantity, ZT, where, Z = S2σ/κ, and S, σ, and κ are the Seebeck coefficient and electrical and thermal …

Defects And Dark Current In Organic Photovoltaics And Impacts On Device Physics, Xin Jiang Nov 2013

Defects And Dark Current In Organic Photovoltaics And Impacts On Device Physics, Xin Jiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we discussed the shape, energy level and density of defects in Organic Photovoltaic (OPV) devices by both theoretical and experimental methods. The energy band structure and intrinsic junctions of general standard and inverted OPV devices are investigated in detail. Transportation of separated holes and electrons in both structures are well analyzed. In chapter II, we developed a Monte-Carlo model to simulate charge transport process in organic materials. Marcus theory is applied to calculate the carrier transfer rate to build up hopping process in ideal lattices. Results of this model showed several properties of carriers regarding mobility, reorganization …

Lamination Of Inverted Organic Photovoltaics And Associated Physical Properties, Brian A. Bailey Nov 2012

Lamination Of Inverted Organic Photovoltaics And Associated Physical Properties, Brian A. Bailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is the result of a series of studies involving hot press lamination of inverted organic photovoltaics. It first gives background and develops a lamination process for fabrication. Then, the process is used to answer fundamental questions about organic photovoltaics and to fabricate previously impossible or overly complicated devices. Finally, the author examines the scientific theory which describes the process and aligns that theory with related measurements.

The field of organic photovoltaics is introduced and the lamination process is developed and optimized. In the lamination process, part of the solar cell is deposited onto a rigid substrate, and the …

Interferometric, Astrometric, And Photometric Studies Of Epsilon Aurigae: Seeing The Disk Around A Distant Star, Brian Keith Kloppenborg Jan 2012

Interferometric, Astrometric, And Photometric Studies Of Epsilon Aurigae: Seeing The Disk Around A Distant Star, Brian Keith Kloppenborg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Epsilon (ε) Aurigae is a binary star system that has baffled astronomers for 170 years. In 1821 it was first noticed that the star system had dimmed by nearly 50%. After many decades of photometric monitoring, the 27.1 year period was finally established in 1903. A few years later, in 1912, Henry Norris Russell published the first analytic methods for binary star analysis. Later application of these formulae came to an interesting conclusion; the system was composed of two stars: the visible F-type supergiant, and an equally massive, but yet photometrically and spectroscopically invisible, companion.

Several theories were advanced to …

Modeling Of Growth Kinetics And Characterization Of Membrane Mechanics, Antonio Nava Jan 2012

Modeling Of Growth Kinetics And Characterization Of Membrane Mechanics, Antonio Nava

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One growing field in alternative energy is biofuel production through microorganisms. These fields of research include hydrogen and biofuel production through the cultivation of algae. We've selected 2 different algae, Anabaena sp. cpcc 387 and Tetraselmis to study. Through mathematical modeling of Anabaena we investigate the complex multicellular relationships and colony stability when noise is introduced. In conjunction with researchers at NREL, we've set out to characterize Tetraselmis cells' membrane elasticity.

Analysis Of Interphase Chromatin Motion In Hela Cells, Matthew Joel Westacott Jan 2012

Analysis Of Interphase Chromatin Motion In Hela Cells, Matthew Joel Westacott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Motion of particles under influencing forces may be observed under light microscopy techniques. Variations in mobility of particles may give relevant biophysical information. Automated high resolution single particle tracking techniques were used to characterize interphase chromatin mobility in the cell nucleus. Interphase chromatin undergo replication prior to cell division with the assistance of replication proteins (machinery) which modify chromatin mobility. Using dual color imaging of flourescently tagged chromatin and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were followed through interphase. Chromatin motion was modelled as a two dimensional random walk. Reduction in chromatin mobility was observed during S phase was dependent on …

Measurement Of Thermoelectric Properties Of Amorphous Silicon Based Thin Films, Rubina Sultan Jan 2010

Measurement Of Thermoelectric Properties Of Amorphous Silicon Based Thin Films, Rubina Sultan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is important to understand thermal transport behavior in materials for technological and fundamental physics applications. Many efforts have been made in the past for explaining thermal conduction in solids. It has been observed that thermal transport properties may change with reducing size of the sample, especially as sample size approaches the nanoscale regime. The deviation in these properties, mainly in thermal conductivity, may change the choice of the material for different applications such as thermoelectricity. Thermoelectric materials are a possible source of sustainable energy and can play an important role in the fight against the present energy crisis. Recently, …
