Historical Floods In New England, M. T. Thomson, William B. Gannon, M. P. Thomas, G. S. Hayes
Historical Floods In New England, M. T. Thomson, William B. Gannon, M. P. Thomas, G. S. Hayes
Maine History Documents
One or more of the great recent New England floods of 1927, 1936, 1938, and 1955 exceeded the greatest known historical floods on most of the major rivers. Locally, on tributary streams, the great floods of recent years probably exceeded historical floods, but the certainty diminishes for the floods that occurred prior to the observance of living witnesses.
This report presents, by year, a condensation of the data on unusual historical floods (floods that occurred before establishment of gaging stations) and the sources of this evidence. This information will be helpful in the determination of the frequency of the highest …
Early History Of Malad Valley, Glade F. Howell
Early History Of Malad Valley, Glade F. Howell
Theses and Dissertations
The Malad Valley is geographically located in a unique position in the Pacific Northwest. The Bear River and its main affluent, the Malad River, are the only rivers in the Pacific Northwest that drain into the Great Basin, whereas the other streams and rivers of the states of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon empty eventually into the Pacific Ocean. It is also characterized for being the northern end of prehistoric Lake Bonneville, and eventually it was through this valley that an outlet opened to drain the lake. The soil deposits from this lake left a fertile valley, capable of producing most …
Factors That Influenced Homesteading And Land Abandonment In San Juan County, Utah, Melvin J. Frost
Factors That Influenced Homesteading And Land Abandonment In San Juan County, Utah, Melvin J. Frost
Theses and Dissertations
Homesteading in San Juan County, Utah is for the most part, located on Sage Plain at elevations between 6,000 to 7,200 feet. Sage Plain is an undulating surface deeply dissected with canyons. The soil is relatively shallow and the predominant vegetation is pinyon, juniper, sage brush and blue-stem grass.
The 52 year mean precipitation is 15.47 inches. Since the beginning of weather records there has been a noticeable decrease in the annual precipitation. There is generally sufficient moisture to mature winter wheat. Pinto beans are also grown in the more favorable locations.
Principle factors that have influenced homesteading and land …
Early History Of Millard County And Its Latter-Day Saint Settlers, 1851-1912, Ladd R. Cropper
Early History Of Millard County And Its Latter-Day Saint Settlers, 1851-1912, Ladd R. Cropper
Theses and Dissertations
Millard County, Utah is located one hundred and fifty miles south of Salt Lake City in the west central part of the state. The county is bounded on the north by Juab County, on the west by Nevada, on the south by Beaver County, and on the east by Sevie, Sanpete, and Juab Counties.
There are interesting formations of extinct volcanoes. Fossils can be found and well marked evidences of an ancient lake named Bonneville.
A short account of the early explorer, Father Escalante, is given in the thesis. This tells of his travels in Millard County in the year …
The Pleistocene Geology Of The Middle ·Portion Of The Elkhorn River Valley, W. D. Frankforter
The Pleistocene Geology Of The Middle ·Portion Of The Elkhorn River Valley, W. D. Frankforter
Papers from the University Studies series (University of Nebraska)
The present report is a physiographic and paleontologic approach to the Pleistocene history of a portion of the Elkhorn River Valley in parts of Dodge, Cuming and Stanton counties in northeastern Nebraska. The area is important for correlation of deposits between the glacial and periglacial regions. Some of the critical stratigraphic units used for correlation in the Pleistocene of these regions are present in close association with the tills and contain fossils which make possible reliable statements on contemporaneity of deposits. The subsequent geologic history and present physiographic expression of this area have been greatly controlled and influenced by the …
The Post-Kansan Geologic History Of The Lower Platte Valley Area, Gilbert Carl Lueninghoener
The Post-Kansan Geologic History Of The Lower Platte Valley Area, Gilbert Carl Lueninghoener
Papers from the University Studies series (University of Nebraska)
This investigation is essentially a geomorphological study of the lower Platte River Valley area in eastern Nebraska. The area comprises Saunders, Dodge, Washington, Douglas, Sarpy, and Cass counties. The area defined above is one of the most critically located of any for the study of the post-Kansan history of the lower Platte River Valley. It lies between the older till (Nebraskan and Kansan) borders to the west and the younger till (Illinoian, Iowan, and Wisconsin) borders to the east. Physiographic changes have therefore transpired in a strictly post-Kansan periglacial region. The Kansan till is the youngest in the area. The …
A Review Of The Daimonelix Problem, C. Bertrand Schultz
A Review Of The Daimonelix Problem, C. Bertrand Schultz
Papers from the University Studies series (University of Nebraska)
THE first paleontological expedition of the University of Nebraska State Museum was organized in the summer of 1891 and was led by Erwin H. Barbour, now Director Emeritus of the Museum. The most important and interesting discoveries made during the season were some very peculiar spiral fossils called by the field party "Devil's Corkscrews," or Daimonelix,l which were found in the Miocene deposits near Harrison in Sioux County, Nebraska. During the fifty years that have intervened scientists have tried to determine the origin of these strange forms. Several controversies arose, and although various theories have been proposed, none as yet …
