Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
The Wabash River Enhancement Corporation (WREC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving both the health of the Wabash River and the surrounding terrestrial areas. In an effort to improve water quality, their urban cost-share program focuses on supporting green projects within a critical region surrounding the Great Bend of the Wabash River. In this essay, a Purdue student describes his experience as leader of a six-member group who worked with WREC to locate a suitable site within this critical area and implement a green project. They selected the Lighthouse Baptist Church, located in Lafayette, Indiana, since it was experiencing …

Dodrant-Homomorphic Encryption For Cloud Databases Using Table Lookup, Thomas Schwarz
Dodrant-Homomorphic Encryption For Cloud Databases Using Table Lookup, Thomas Schwarz
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Users of large commercial databases increasingly want to outsource their database operations to a cloud service providers, but guaranteeing the privacy of data in an outsourced database has become the major obstacle to this move. Encrypting all data solves the privacy issue, but makes many operations on the data impossible in the cloud, unless the service provider has the capacity to decrypt data temporarily. Homomorphic encryption would solve this issue, but despite great and on-going progress, it is still far from being operationally feasible. In 2015, we presented what we now call dodrant-homomorphic encryption, a method that encrypts numeric values …

Improving Hpc Communication Library Performance On Modern Architectures, Matthew G. F. Dosanjh
Improving Hpc Communication Library Performance On Modern Architectures, Matthew G. F. Dosanjh
Computer Science ETDs
As high-performance computing (HPC) systems advance towards exascale (10^18 operations per second), they must leverage increasing levels of parallelism to achieve their performance goals. In addition to increased parallelism, machines of that scale will have strict power limitations placed on them. One direction currently being explored to alleviate those issues are many-core processors such as Intel’s Xeon Phi line. Many-core processors sacrifice clock speed and core complexity, such as out of order pipelining, to increase the number of cores on a die. While this increases floating point throughput, it can reduce the performance of serialized, synchronized, and latency sensitive code …
Stable Isotopes In The Eye Lenses Of Doryteuthis Plei: Exploring Natal Origins And Migratory Patterns In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Brenna A. Meath
Stable Isotopes In The Eye Lenses Of Doryteuthis Plei: Exploring Natal Origins And Migratory Patterns In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Brenna A. Meath
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stable isotope analysis is an emerging tool to examine trophic pathways and migratory patterns of marine organisms. Squid are widely distributed in coastal and deep water regions of the Gulf of Mexico. Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen found within cephalopod tissues can provide information on both trophic level and habitat of their food sources. More recently, ontogenetic changes in stable isotope ratios within squid eye lenses have been documented. Concentric layers of crystallin proteins are added to the lens as the squid ages; the center of the lens contains the oldest layer and the youngest layers are on …

Morphodynamics Of Atolls, Reef Flats, And The Islands Atop Them, Andrew Ashton
Morphodynamics Of Atolls, Reef Flats, And The Islands Atop Them, Andrew Ashton
Sustainability Seminar Series
The atolls that dot the tropical oceans of (primarily) the Pacific and Indian Oceans contain shallow and emergent coastal environments that often comprise the only subaerial, inhabitable land of many island chains and island nations. Created foremost by calcifying organisms, and composed of both biogenic rocky substrate and detrital sediment, these shallow environments are shaped by waves, currents, and tides. The low-lying, geomorphically active reef islands sitting atop of atolls face considerable hazards from climate change. I will present a series of recent and ongoing research projects addressing the formation mechanisms and potential climate change response of coastal atoll environments, …

Grading Complex Tasks Through Crowdsourcing, Lingyu Lyu
Commonwealth Computational Summit
Crowdsourcing provides huge opportunities and scalability solutions for grading large scale tasks, such as MOOCs.
Reliability and quality of graders and crowdsourced data are challenging issues.
Workers might give random grades, which are spam; or provide biased grades, which need to be corrected.
The budget for hiring graders is limited, in many cases.

Parallelization Of A Three-Dimensional Full Multigrid Algorithm To Simulate Tumor Growth, Dylan Goodin, Chin F. Ng, Hermann B. Frieboes
Commonwealth Computational Summit
We present the performance gains of an openMP implementation of a fully adaptive nonlinear full multigrid (FMG) algorithm to simulate three-dimensional multispecies desmoplastic tumor growth on computer systems of varying processing capabilities. The FMG algorithm is applied to solve a recently published thermodynamic mixture model that uses a diffuse interface approach with fourth-order reaction-advection-diffusion PDEs (Cahn-Hilliard-type equations) that are coupled, nonlinear, and numerically stiff. The model includes multiple cell species and extracellular matrix (ECM), with adhesive and elastic energy contributions in chemical potential terms, as well as including blood and lymphatic vessels represented as continuous vasculatures. Advection-reaction-diffusion PDEs are employed …

A Network Tomography Approach For Traffic Monitoring In Smart Cities, Ruoxi Zhang, Sara Newman, Marco Ortolani, Simone Silvestri
Commonwealth Computational Summit
Various urban planning and managing activities required by a Smart City are feasible because of traffic monitoring. As such, this project proposes a network tomography-based approach that can be applied to road networks to achieve a cost-efficient, flexible, and scalable monitor deployment. Due to the algebraic approach of network tomography, the selection of monitoring intersections can be solved through the use of matrices, with its rows representing paths between two intersections, and its columns representing links in the road network. Because the goal of the algorithm is to provide an inexpensive monitor set, this problem can be translated into a …

Formation Of Supermassive Black Holes In The Early Universe: High-Resolution Numerical Simulations Of Radiation Transfer Inside Collapsing Gas, Yang Luo, Kazem Ardaneh, Isaac Shlosman, Kentaro Nagamine, John Wise, Mitchell C. Begelman
Commonwealth Computational Summit
Observations of high-redshift quasars reveal that super massive black holes (SMBHs) with masses exceeding 109 M⊙ formed as early as redshift z ~ 7 [1,3,6]. This means that SMBHs have already formed ~700 million years after the Big Bang. How did such SMBHs could grow so quickly?
In this work, we use a modified and improved version of the blockstructured adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) code ENZO [2] to provide high spatial and temporal resolution for modeling the formation of SMBHs via direct collapse within dark matter (DM) halos at high redshifts. The radiation hydrodynamics equations are solved in …
