Resonant Vibrations Of The Irish Folk Harp, Patrick Healy Jan 1993

Resonant Vibrations Of The Irish Folk Harp, Patrick Healy

Other Resources

An analysis of the resonant vibration of an O’Meachair cedar and mahogany Irish folk harp is reported. A report is also made of a small number of measurements carried out on an O’Meachair spruce and maple Irish folk harp. The structure and operation of the harp is described.

The theory of small vibrations of plates and wooden boards is set out.

The system devised to measure input admittance at driving points on the harp body over a frequency range O-2 kHz is described. Tests of its linearity and out of its frequency flatness are reported.

Resonant vibrations of an isolated …

Hysteresis And Anchoring Energy In Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals, Yuri Panarin Jan 1993

Hysteresis And Anchoring Energy In Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals, Yuri Panarin

Articles

The frequency dispersion of the coercive force of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals (FLC) cells has been detected and examined in the range of infralow (lower than 0.1 Hz) frequencies. To clarify the low-frequency dispersion, the model has been suggested, based on the arrangement of free charges and well describing the experimental curves. The method for determination of the energy of FLC anchoring at the surface, developed on the basis of the static hysteresis loop, has been proposed. The dependence of bistability and the anchoring energy upon the orientant layer thickness has experimentally been investigated.

Applying Metrics To Rule-Based Systems, Paul Doyle, Renaat Verbruggen Jan 1992

Applying Metrics To Rule-Based Systems, Paul Doyle, Renaat Verbruggen

Other

Since the introduction of software measurement theory in the early seventies it has been accepted that in order to control software it must first be measured. Unambiguous and reproducible measurements are considered to be the most useful in controlling software productivity, costs and quality, and diverse sets of measurements are required to cover all aspects of software. This paper focuses on measures for rule-based language systems and also describes a process for developing measures for other non-standard 3GL development tools. This paper uses KEL as an example and the method allows the re-use of existing measures and indicates if and …

Degnerate Four-Wave Mixing In Rhodamine Doped Epoxy Waveguides, B. Rossi, Hugh Byrne, W. Blau

Articles

Self-diffraction from laser-induced gratings is observed in a 13 pm-thick film of rhodamine I3 doped epoxy. The decay of the grating is measured to be 2.05 ns. Degenerate forward four-wave mixing in a guided geometry is observed by coupling out all beams after nronagation over 1 mm. At 595 nm the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of the film is measured to be 1.5~10-‘~ m2Ve2.

Shadow Casting Phenomena At Newgrange, Frank Prendergast Jan 1991

Shadow Casting Phenomena At Newgrange, Frank Prendergast

Articles

A digital model of the Newgrange passage tomb and surrounding ring of monoliths known as the Great Circle is used to investigate sunrise shadow casting phenomena at the monument. Diurnal variation in shadow directions and lengths are analysed for their potential use in the Bronze Age to indicate the passage of seasonal time. Computer-aided simulations are developed from a photogrammetric survey to accurately show how three of the largest monoliths, located closest to the tomb entrance and archaeologically coded GC1, GC-1 and GC-2, cast their shadows onto the vertical face of the entrance kerbstone, coded K1. The phenomena occur at …

On Separable Torsion- Free Modules Of Countable Density Character, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1991

On Separable Torsion- Free Modules Of Countable Density Character, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

The endomorphism algebras of modules of large cardinalities have been extensively studied in recent years using the combinatorial set-theoretic techniques of Shelah-the so-called black-box methods (see, e.g., [4, 5, 151). Despite the spectacular success of these methods, they are not suitable for realization theorems at small carinalities. Of course at the level of countability (or rather more generally for cardinals ~2’~) there are in some cases the original dramatic results of A. L. S. Corner [ 1, 2, 31 and the more recent generalizations of Gobel and May [ 111. Very recently the study of realization problems at cardinalities

Mixed Modules In L, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

By assuming the set-theoretic hypothesis V = L we show that, for a large class of rings R, there exist, for any regular not weekly compact cardinals K, strongly k-cyclic mixed R-modules having endomorphism algebra isomorphic to the split extension of the R-algebra A by the ideal of bounded endomorphism provided A is free qua R-module and K./Az/

Reactions Of Hydroxyl Radicals And Chlorine Atoms With Compounds Of Group Iv Elements., Denis J. O'Farrell Jan 1989

Reactions Of Hydroxyl Radicals And Chlorine Atoms With Compounds Of Group Iv Elements., Denis J. O'Farrell

Doctoral

Rate data are reported for the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with a series of substituted silanes. The data presented suggest the presence of polar effects in the transition state. Good agreement is reported between a relative rate study and an absolute rate study, Table (i). The corresponding reaction of chlorine atoms with the series of substituted silanes support the suggestion of polar effects in the transition state, Table (ii). Rate data are also reported for the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with a series of tetramethyl and tetraethyl compounds of the Group IV elements. The data presented show an enhanced reactivity …

A Note On Coslender Groups, R. Dimitric, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1988

A Note On Coslender Groups, R. Dimitric, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

The notion of a coslender group has been introduced previously by the first author. This work continues the investigation of such groups, defines coslender part of a group, proves embeddability results, gives a characterization of finite rank coslender grops, and proves a result on smooth ascending chains of coslender groups with a conjecture that every countable coslender torsion free group is a smooth ascending union of finite rank coslender pure subgroups.

On Endomorphism And Automorphisms Of Some Torsion-Free Modules, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1987

On Endomorphism And Automorphisms Of Some Torsion-Free Modules, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

The relationship between the endomorphism ring and the automorphism group of an abelian p-group has been extensively investigated. It is known that theautomorphism group need not generate the full endomorphism ring. In this paper we investigate the analagous problem for torsion free modules over a complete discrete valuation ring obtaining similar results.

A Note On Products Of Infinite Cyclic Groups, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1981

A Note On Products Of Infinite Cyclic Groups, Brendan Goldsmith

In his book [2], Fuchs introduces the notion of a subgroup X of a Specker group P being a product and goes on to establish a Lemma [2, Lemma 95.1] which yields a useful characterization of the quotient and enables an easy derivation of Nunke’s characterization of epimorphic images of the Specker group [4]. Unfortunately this Lemma is incorrect as we show in section 1. In section 2 by suitably strengthening the hypothesis we regain a characterization of the quotient. Throughout, all groups are additively written Abelian groups and our notation follows the standard works of Fuchs [1], [2].

Algorithms For The Solution Of Systems Of Coupled Second-Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Brendan O'Shea

Articles

Several step-by-step methods for the computer solution systems of coupled second-order ordinary differential equations, are examined from the point of view of efficiency “time-wise” and “storage-wise”. Particular reference is made to a system arising in the close-coupling approximation of the Schroedinger equation. The stability of the solution is also considered.

Wearable Electrochemical Sensors For Monitoring Performance Athletes, Kevin J. Fraser, Vincenzo F. Curtin, Shirley Coyle, Benjamin Schazmann, Robert Byrne, Fernando Benito-Lopez, Roisin M. Owens, George C. Malliaras, Dermot Diamond

Conference Papers

Nowadays, wearable sensors such as heart rate monitors and pedometers are in common use. The use of wearable systems such as these for personalized exercise regimes for health and rehabilitation is particularly interesting. In particular, the true potential of wearable chemical sensors, which for the real-time ambulatory monitoring of bodily fluids such as tears, sweat, urine and blood has not been realized. Here we present a brief introduction into the fields of ionogels and organic electrochemical transistors, and in particular, the concept of an OECT transistor incorporated into a sticking-plaster, along with a printable “ionogel” to provide a wearable biosensor …
