Vertical Resistivity Electrode Arrays For Detecting Hydrocarbon Movement And Content In Sands, Kirt Elliott Apr 1998

Vertical Resistivity Electrode Arrays For Detecting Hydrocarbon Movement And Content In Sands, Kirt Elliott

Masters Theses

In many contamination sites where hydrocarbon is involved an accurate thickness of the contaminant can not be achieved through the most commonly used methods. The purpose of this study is to find an alternate method of determining a precise thickness and monitor the contaminant movement in conjunction with the current methods. Vertical resistivity electrode arrays were tested in a lab environment on singular probes and between probes. The arrays tested were the Wenner, dipole dipole, gradient, parallel and down-hole 3-arrays. Electrode pipes were constructed and placed into a sand tank where the hydrocarbon thickness and the water level could be …

Factors Governing The Rate Of Appearance Of Fuels In Monitoring Wells, Bradley A. Green Apr 1998

Factors Governing The Rate Of Appearance Of Fuels In Monitoring Wells, Bradley A. Green

Masters Theses

Delays in the appearance of free product (e.g. fuels) in groundwater monitoring wells often cause costly delays in site evaluation. Little is known about how monitoring well design and installation affect this rate of appearance. This study examined the effects of well screen open area, filter pack grain size and wettability, and well development methods on the rate of appearance and subsequent thickness of free product in wells.

Laboratory and field results indicate that free product appears faster in hydrophilic filter packs than in hydrophobic filter packs. Hydrophobic filter packs with a finer grain size than the "industry standard", seem …

Sm-Nd Systematics As Indicators Of Displaced Plutons: A Test In The Idaho Batholith-Boulder Batholith Region, Christine J. Brand Apr 1998

Sm-Nd Systematics As Indicators Of Displaced Plutons: A Test In The Idaho Batholith-Boulder Batholith Region, Christine J. Brand

Masters Theses

In east-central Idaho and western Montana a 400km-long Cretaceous and Tertiary magmatic corridor extends from the Wallowa-Seven Devils terrane to the Helena Salient. Three basement provinces underlie this area: Archean basement to the east, Permo-Triassic basement to the west, and Proterozoic basement in-between. Ideally, if Cretaceous plutons were decapitated and translated eastward along thrusts over a different basement province, then the Cretaceous pluton and the in-place Tertiary pluton would show different isotopic signatures. Pluton samples from locations evenly spaced throughout the magmatic corridor were analyzed for ε0Nd, εtNd, and 147Sm/143Nd model ages …

Comparison Of Ice-Shelf Creep Flow Simulations With Ice-Front Motion Of Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica, Detected By Sar Interferometry, Christina L. Hulbe, Eric Rignot, D. R. Macayeal Apr 1998

Comparison Of Ice-Shelf Creep Flow Simulations With Ice-Front Motion Of Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica, Detected By Sar Interferometry, Christina L. Hulbe, Eric Rignot, D. R. Macayeal

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Comparison between numerical model ice-shelf flow simulations and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferograms is used to study ice-flow dynamics at the Hemmen Ice Rise (HIR) and Lassiter Coast (LC) corners of the iceberg-calving front of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The interferograms are constructed from SAR images provided by the European Space Agency's remote-sensing satellites (ERS-lj2). Narrow bands of large shear strain rate are observed along the boundaries between fastflowing ice-shelf ice and no-flow boundaries. Large rifts, opened where the ice shelf separates from the coast, appear to be filled with a melange of sea ice, ice-shelf fragments, and snow. …

The Geomorphological History Of An Alluvial Fan Complex In Nelson County, Virginia, Melinda Ann Youngblood Apr 1998

The Geomorphological History Of An Alluvial Fan Complex In Nelson County, Virginia, Melinda Ann Youngblood

OES Theses and Dissertations

An alluvial fan complex blankets a portion of the Rockfish Valley in Nelson County Virginia, located along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The seven-km2 field area contains three mappable relict alluvial surfaces (Qf1, Qf2, and Qf3) and one modern surface (Qa1), each of which is underlain by fluvial deposits dominated by greenstone and charnokite cobbles. The four surfaces were mapped according to topographic position and degree of stream dissection. Alluvial deposits underlying each surface were characterized using a 3-part clast weathering scale based on greenstone clast weathering rinds and using soil development criteria (clay content, Munsell …

A Paleoenvironmental Study Of A Middle Wisconsinan Biota Site, Russell County, Virginia, Thomas C. Wynn

OES Theses and Dissertations

The study area lies in a first-order valley on the northwestern slope of Clinch Mountain that drains into Moccasin Creek. The deposit is 50 m long, 25 m wide and approximately 10 m thick and overlies the Ordovician Moccasin Formation. Preserved within the deposit are mammoth and mastodon bones, logs, and plant macrofossils. Radiocarbon analyses indicate the age of the organic-rich sediments ranges from 29, I 00 BP to >44,000 BP, a time period with no fossil remains reported in this region of the Appalachians. Analyses of field observations, textural data, organic carbon content, and plant macrofossils indicate the organic-rich …

Groundwater Hydraulics And Slope Stability Analysis: Elements For Prediction Of Shoreline Recession, William W. Montgomery Apr 1998

Groundwater Hydraulics And Slope Stability Analysis: Elements For Prediction Of Shoreline Recession, William W. Montgomery

Dissertations

Studies documenting the roles that geologic materials and groundwater play in Great Lakes bluff recession are rare. This study reports findings concerning relationships between bluff lithology, bluff hydrology, and bluff recession along a 10-mile stretch of eastern Lake Michigan shoreline in heterogeneous Pleistocene deposes. According to a newly-developed, field-tested, GIS-based methodology, bluffs in the study area can be characterized lithologically as sand, clay, or mixed sand/clay, and can be characterized hydrologically as exhibiting either high head or low head.

Geotechnical analysis indicates that Atterberg limits, index properties, consolidation state, and drainage conditions affect the shear strength of bluff materials. Silty …

The Keraf Suture, formed during the Neoproterozoic consolidation of Gondwana, is a ~500 km long, ~50 km wide, N-trending suture between the Neoproterozoic Arabian-Nubian Shield in the east and the older Nile Craton to the west. The Keraf Suture is superimposed on E- and NE-trending structures on both sides. The northern part of the suture is dominated by N-trending, upright folds, whereas the southern part is characterized by N- and NNW-trending, sinistral, strike-slip faults. A major antiform defines a structural divide between the northern and southern parts of the suture. 40Ar/39Ar ages on biotite and hornblendes separated …

Morphology, Eruption Rates, And Rheology Of Lava Domes: Insights From Laboratory Models, Jonathan H. Fink, Ross W. Griffiths Jan 1998

Morphology, Eruption Rates, And Rheology Of Lava Domes: Insights From Laboratory Models, Jonathan H. Fink, Ross W. Griffiths

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The growth of lava domes can be either quiescent or violent, with transitions between styles of behavior commonly occurring with little warning. Here we propose that the behavior depends on the eruption rate, the magma rheology, and the thickness ofthe cooling surface. We present a model, based on laboratory simulations, field measurements, and photographic analysis, that relates the morphology and texture of a dome to the thickness of its cooled carapace, and thence to eruption conditions. A sequence of four main types of dome (spiny, lobate, platy, and axisymmetric) is identified in laboratory analog experiments with a Bingham plastic. These …

The Petrography Of The Buck Creek Dunite Body, Clay County, Nc: Implications About Its Origin And Emplacement, Trista L. Thornberry Jan 1998

The Petrography Of The Buck Creek Dunite Body, Clay County, Nc: Implications About Its Origin And Emplacement, Trista L. Thornberry

Honors Papers

The Buck Creek dunite body, which is part of the Chunky Gal mafic and ultramafic complex, is well exposed on Corundum Knob in Clay County, North Carolina. These ultramafic rocks are surrounded here by mafic schists and gneisses. Gradational geochemical / mineralogical contacts between the mafic and ultramafic rocks of the this complex imply the same protolith for both rock types. They may have originated as distinct parts of an ophiolitic suite beneath a mid-ocean spreading ridge. The metamorphic history of these ophiolitic rocks suggest further that they were subdued to depths of -18km before being emplaced along fault zones …

Urban Earthquake Hazards: The Impact Of Culture On Perceived Risk And Response In The Usa And Japan, Risa Palm Jan 1998

Urban Earthquake Hazards: The Impact Of Culture On Perceived Risk And Response In The Usa And Japan, Risa Palm

Geosciences Faculty Publications

This paper reports on a major survey of earthquake hazard response in neighbourhoods in Tokyo-Yokohama and Los Angeles, two metropolitan areas of highly industrialized nations which routinely exchange ideas in order to try to learn from the policies, practices and experiences of the other. Survey findings showed many similarities in hazard response and preferred public policy, but also important contrasts in behaviour, and significant differences in the factors associated with these behaviours. The findings suggest caution in bi-national policy-sharing unless such sharing is preceded by a careful study of local cultural contexts.

Kentucky's Coal Industry: Historical Trends And Future Opportunities, Gerald A. Weisenfluh, James C. Cobb, John C. Ferm, Carol L. Ruthven Jan 1998

Kentucky's Coal Industry: Historical Trends And Future Opportunities, Gerald A. Weisenfluh, James C. Cobb, John C. Ferm, Carol L. Ruthven

Information Circular--KGS

Coal has been produced in Kentucky since the late 18th century. In the early years, all mining was by underground methods, but surface mining became the dominant method during and after World War II. In recent years, surface-mine production in both fields has decreased while underground mining has increased.

In the last half of this century, the traditional steam coal market for locomotives has virtually disappeared, leaving electric power generation and coking coal for the steel industry as the principal markets. More than half of all coal produced in the State has been produced in the last 25 years. Whether …

Impact Of Topographic And Data Resolution On Hydrologic And Nonpoint-Source Pollution Modeling In A Karst Terrane, Alex W. Fogle

Report of Investigations--KGS

To prevent or reduce the contamination of ground water from agricultural sources, Best Management Practices (BMP’s) such as land-use changes, modifications to control surface runoff, various tillage methods, variations in rates and kinds of chemical applications, and handling procedures for chemicals are being employed and analyzed for effectiveness. The effectiveness of a BMP is often estimated before implementation by evaluating the BMP through the use of computer simulation models. The interactions between surface water and ground water that are unique to karst terranes are not incorporated into the frequently used predictive models. The purpose of this study was to document …

Identification Of Past Climate Variability Of The Eastern Pacific Ocean Using Both D13c And D18o Records In Corals From Clipperton Atoll (1994-1906), Lei Ren Jan 1998

Identification Of Past Climate Variability Of The Eastern Pacific Ocean Using Both D13c And D18o Records In Corals From Clipperton Atoll (1994-1906), Lei Ren

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The ENSO (El Nino and the Southern Oscillation) is a fundamental ocean-atmosphere phenomenon that dominates interannual global climate variability. Reconstructing past ENSO events is therefore important for documenting and understanding the past behavior of the global climate system and enabling us to predict future climate change. However, the present understanding of ENSO events has been mainly based on the instrumental record of Pacific climate which provides detailed data only for the past few decades. Recent studies have shown that the stable isotope record in coral skeletons can be used as a valuable indicator of paleoclimatic changes in tropical regions, and …

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

We studied soils of the big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) hybrid zone at two locations in Utah. The elemental composition, depth, and pH of soil in the basin and mountain big sagebrush habitats differed significantly from each other and from the hybrid zone soil. The hybrid zone soil is not just a simple blend of the two parental habitat soils. Rather, it possesses novel characteristics found in neither parental habitat and is more variable than the parental habitat soils. Correspondence analyses show that the sites occupied by each parental taxon are chemically distinct. Moreover, the principal axes from the two study …

Ridgetop Splitting, Spreading, And Shattering Related To Earthquakes In Southern California, James P. Mccalpin Jan 1998

Ridgetop Splitting, Spreading, And Shattering Related To Earthquakes In Southern California, James P. Mccalpin

James P. McCalpin

Our mapping documents that anomalous ridgetop landforms are numerous in the San Gabriel and Santa Susana Mountains, and that many sites (37% of the San Gabriel sites, 16% of the Santa Susana sites) are not associated with any visible signs of landsliding. These sites may represent deep-seated gravitational spreading due to earthquake shaking. However, our factor analysis indicates that the spatial distribution of these suspected spreading landforms, with respect to ridge relief and distance to Late Quaternary faults, is essentially identical to that of landslides. Thus, it seems that if these spreading landforms represent the results of earthquake shaking, than …

Statistics Of Paleoseismic Data, James P. Mccalpin Jan 1998

Statistics Of Paleoseismic Data, James P. Mccalpin

James P. McCalpin

Compiled data from numerous neotectonic-geomorphic and trench studies reveals patterns in the spatial and temporal variation of coseismic fault displacement. Recurrence intervals between successive large earthquakes on faults define a near-symmetrical probability distribution with a coefficient of variance of 0.36. Normal faults have the most regular recurrence, and subduction zones the most variable. Variability in recurrence times at a site is not dependent on the number of recurrence intervals dated at that site. During historic surface-rupturing earthquakes slip has varied widely along strike. Based on 56 ruptures where more than 15 displacement measurements were made, the generic pattern is for …
