Balance Of Adults With Chronic Ankle Instability Following A 6-Week Core Stability Program, Natalie Dickol Apr 2020

Balance Of Adults With Chronic Ankle Instability Following A 6-Week Core Stability Program, Natalie Dickol

Theses and Dissertations

Ankle injuries are one of the most common injuries in the athletic population because of the anatomy of the ankle in conjunction with dynamic activity. During injury, mechanoreceptors are damaged, effecting neuromuscular control. Lack of neuromuscular control puts patients at risk for re-injury. Chronic ankle instability (CAI) has been defined as a condition associated with recurrent sprains and persistent symptoms, including feelings of "giving way," loss of function and limited movement and continuous ankle pain. Patients with CAI are commonly shown to have functional deficits in postural control, such as overcompensating on the uninvolved limb or unable to maintain proper …

High-school athletes are of particular interest because of the heightened risks of long-term consequences and of particular note second impact syndrome, which is a catastrophic injury primarily reported in the adolescent aged athlete. Appropriate concussion assessment and management is necessary for reducing the possibility of these long- term effects of concussions. Properly trained …

Clinical And Neurophysiological Effects Of Dry Needling On Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability, Jennifer Mullins Jan 2020

Clinical And Neurophysiological Effects Of Dry Needling On Individuals With Chronic Ankle Instability, Jennifer Mullins

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Ankle sprains are generally considered innocuous injuries; however, as many as 74% of patients will develop chronic symptoms. 1-3 Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is defined by a history of ankle sprain accompanied by ongoing bouts of giving way, residual ankle sprain symptoms, and a decrease in patient-perceived function. As understanding of sensorimotor deficits in individuals with CAI have advanced, treatment strategies have evolved to include a robust focus on balance training to mitigate dynamic and static postural control impairments exhibited in individuals with CAI. A problem arises as these improvements have not been conclusively linked to a decrease in CAI. …

Efficacy Of Pain Scales In Athletic Populations And Paired With Aglometric Measurements, Elisabeth Anne Ohrnberger Jan 2020

Efficacy Of Pain Scales In Athletic Populations And Paired With Aglometric Measurements, Elisabeth Anne Ohrnberger

Online Theses and Dissertations

Objective: Pain is the most common symptom and reason for why affected individuals seek out medical attention for injuries. The most common pain scales are: the numerical rating scale (NRS), 5-point verbal rating scale (VRS-5), and visual analog scale (VAS) but there is no gold standard established to measure unidimensional pain intensity. Algometry is an objective technique to measure pain pressure threshold and tolerances. However, there is little research on which scale is best suited to assess pain intensity in different demographics; including athletic populations and other types of groups; as well as, whether subjective pain scale measurements can be …

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury-Induced Alterations In Inflammation And Muscle Physiology, Emily R. Hunt Jan 2020

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury-Induced Alterations In Inflammation And Muscle Physiology, Emily R. Hunt

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Long term weakness and atrophy of the quadriceps muscle are a direct result of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and persist for up to 10 years post injury. Muscle atrophy ensues regardless of ligamentous reconstruction surgery, indicating that muscle atrophy following injury is a function of the ligament rupture and not reconstruction surgery. Elucidating the mechanisms underlying quadriceps atrophy following ACL rupture is crucial for developing interventions to restore proper quadriceps size and mitigate weakness thereby allowing for improved patient function. In addition to understanding the specific mechanisms that contribute to quadriceps atrophy following ACL rupture, the timing of atrophic …

Jump squats can be used when other forms of power training are not available or are not allowed. In order to most efficiently train power, the intensity must balance force and velocity. The purpose of this study was to find the intensity that yields the peak power output of a jump squat. 12 participants (9 males, 3 female) participated in the study. Each participant completed a …

Bilateral And Unilateral Resistance Training And Athletic Performance, Brendyn B. Appleby Jul 2019

Bilateral And Unilateral Resistance Training And Athletic Performance, Brendyn B. Appleby

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Specificity is a key programming principle for optimal transfer of physiological adaptation of training to improved athletic performance. In resistance training, it has long been identified that the closer the mechanical specificity between the training exercise and outcome performance, the greater the transfer of improved capacity. Bilateral resistance exercises are predominately prescribed for the development of maximum strength and are well demonstrated to enhance athletic performance. However, unilateral exercises appear to demonstrate greater specificity to movements such as running and change of direction as these movements are predominantly single leg actions. Nonetheless, the unstable nature and comparatively lower magnitude of …
