The Correlation Between Bilingual Children’S Self-Reported Language Proficiency And Their Scores On Dual-Language Standardized Assessments, Andrea Elise Vargas
The Correlation Between Bilingual Children’S Self-Reported Language Proficiency And Their Scores On Dual-Language Standardized Assessments, Andrea Elise Vargas
Theses and Dissertations
This study aimed to evaluate the relation between bilingual Spanish-English speaking children’s self-reported language proficiencies and bilingual experiences and their scores on norm-referenced standardized dual-language assessments. Additionally, the relation between bilingual children’s self-reported language proficiencies and bilingual experiences and parent reports of children’s Spanish and English input and output was examined. The Houston Questionnaire, a novel tool designed to provide insight into bilingual children’s self-perceptions of language proficiencies and experiences, was administered to gather such information for this study. A sample of bilingual children local to Columbia, South Carolina completed a battery of dual-language standardized assessments in kindergarten, and then …

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Speech-language pathology graduate programs do not reflect equity across racial and ethnic groups. Training programs must adopt an anti-racist stance and intentionally and strategically plan for equity and inclusion of students and professionals who are Black, Indigenous and Persons of Color (BIPOC). Retention of minoritized students must be supported by inclusion efforts. The authors review systems of support essential to the recruitment and retention of BIPOC students in graduate programs. Through funding support from a grant, the authors developed a model of training bilingual SLP students to work with dual language learners through an inclusive model of interprofessional education. Finally, …

Serving Culturally And Linguistic Students Identified With A Communication Disability In The K-12 Educational Environments, Lashell Dauterman
Theses and Dissertations
As more and more students enter public schools with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds that require services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, facilitators must be more sensitive to the needs, especially in the area of communication. Augmentative and alternative communication devices and other assistive technology are required by law to be utilized with individuals identified as disabled. However, due to the challenges that exist in properly identifying and implementing intervention plans for children who require services as English language learners and special education, communication needs are often misidentified or not provided. Another issue that exists is the lack …

The Examination Of Morpho-Syntactic Production In Bahamian Children Exposed To Bahamian Creole English And English, Danielle Moss
Dissertations, 2020-current
Purpose. Information on the morpho-syntax development of children who speak varieties of Bahamian English, such as Bahamian Creole English (BCE), remains understudied. Therefore, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) assessing the expressive language of children who speak BCE encounter challenges in making clinical judgments of language difference, developmental errors, and language disorder because they are unable to judge the morpho-syntactic features of this creole to the rules of another variety of Bahamian English, standard English (SE1), as both varieties, BCE and SE, are independently rule-governed. This dissertation study investigated the morpho-syntax of typically developing four and six-year-old Bahamian children who speak …

Bilingualism And The American Family, Caitlin M. Nickerson
Bilingualism And The American Family, Caitlin M. Nickerson
Senior Honors Projects
Bilingualism is the ability to speak more than one language fluently. People of all ages may aspire to learn a second or third language in order to fulfill both personal goals and communicate with a variety of people in different contexts. Irrespective of one’s walk of life or socioeconomic status, being bilingual is a valuable skill. Although English is the language of power in the United States, there are hundreds of other languages spoken in this country.
There are a number of different ways in which children can become bilingual. For example, they may enter the school system speaking the …
Code Mixing In Narratives Of Spanish-English Dual Language Learners, Janine Peca
Code Mixing In Narratives Of Spanish-English Dual Language Learners, Janine Peca
Undergraduate Research
As the U.S. diversifies, the number of Spanish-English dual language learners (DLLs) has grown significantly and is projected to continue to do so through 2060 (Colby & Ortman, 2015). Although research has shown that DLLs implement strategies, like code mixing, to compensate for varying language proficiencies (Vu, Bailey, & Howes, 2010), what elements of code mixing are typical has not been widely researched. This study aims to add to the body of work on typical development of DLL children by examining code mixing in narratives of 212 Spanish-English dual language learners at the beginning of preschool, to determine if differences …

Validating The Accuracy Of A Language Screening Instrument In Identifying Preschool Children In El Paso, Texas, Roxana Stubbemann
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Background: Effective screeners are time and cost effective and may be an efficient indicator of whether a child needs further in-depth assessment. Surveyed Speech-Language Pathologists in the El Paso, TX region report using informal screening tools such as observational measures and checklists due to the lack of adequate standardized tools that suit the needs of bilingual children, which occupy a majority of their caseloads (Curtis, Summers, Smith, & Stubbemann, 2016). Many language-screening instruments are not psychometrically sound for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) populations and limited research exists on the accuracy of these tools.
Purpose: The purpose of this study …
The Use Of Code-Switching In Bilingual Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Monica Yolanda Ponce-Lawler
The Use Of Code-Switching In Bilingual Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Monica Yolanda Ponce-Lawler
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Abstract
Background: Code-switching may be seen as a weakness in the eyes of many who do not truly
understand bilingualism. Several professionals consider code-switching to be a compensatory
strategy, however other professionals perceive code-switching as a functionally motivating behavior
(Chung, 2006). Whether is it consciously or subconsciously that a child code-switches, there is
limited research on when bilingual children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are likely to
code-switch as well as what patterns they utilize when they code-switch.
Purpose: To grow the limited research on the use of code-switching in bilingual children with ASD.

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study was conducted to address language of intervention for the rapidly-growing bilingual population of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a monolingual English or bilingual Spanish/English condition would yield a greater number of request types in a 3-year-old bilingual participant with autism. A single-subject, rapid alternating treatments design with baseline and a final maintenance phase was used to alternate between monolingual English and bilingual Spanish/English interventions. Results did not meet the criteria set for continuation of treatment in either condition; therefore, both monolingual and bilingual interventions …
Language-Mixing In Discourse In Bilingual Individuals With Non-Fluent Aphasia, Avanthi Paplikar
Language-Mixing In Discourse In Bilingual Individuals With Non-Fluent Aphasia, Avanthi Paplikar
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Language-mixing (LM) as defined by Chengappa (2009, p. 417) is an “intra-sentential phenomenon referred to as the mixing of various linguistic units (morphemes, words, modifiers, phrases, etc.), primarily from two participating grammatical systems”. LM is influenced by grammatical, environmental, and social constraints (e.g., Milroy & Wei, 1995; Bhat & Chengappa, 2005). Researchers have suggested that LM in patients with aphasia is a communicative strategy used to achieve successful exchanges between speakers; the effectiveness of this mixing, however, had yet to be demonstrated quantitatively.
In the current study we investigated whether LM is present in bilingual speakers with aphasia, and if …

The Spanish-English Bilingual: A Cross-Classfication Comparison Of Maze Use In Children, Jessica Valles
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
With the continual increase of bilingual individuals in the United States, there is a critical need for research that can appropriately identify unique characteristics of language production for these individuals. In particular, maze use, or errors in production have been identified as a characteristic of language that typically occurs more in bilinguals' speech production than in monolingual productions. Research comparing bilingual maze use in individuals who are typically developing with bilingual maze use individuals who are language impaired is limited. To compare these bilingual children with language impairment with to their typically developing peers, children were paired by age, grade, …
