Global Comparison Of Warring Groups In 2002-2007: Fatalities From Targeting Civilians Vs. Fighting Battles., M Hicks, U Lee, R Sundberg, M Spagat

Madelyn Hsiao-Rei Hicks

BACKGROUND:

Warring groups that compete to dominate a civilian population confront contending behavioral options: target civilians or battle the enemy. We aimed to describe degrees to which combatant groups concentrated lethal behavior into intentionally targeting civilians as opposed to engaging in battle with opponents in contemporary armed conflict.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:

We identified all 226 formally organized state and non-state groups (i.e. actors) that engaged in lethal armed conflict during 2002-2007: 43 state and 183 non-state. We summed civilians killed by an actor's intentional targeting with civilians and combatants killed in battles in which the actor was involved for total fatalities …

Serotonin Transporter (5-Httlpr) Genotype And Childhood Trauma Are Associated With Individual Differences In Decision Making, Scott Stoltenberg Dec 2010

Serotonin Transporter (5-Httlpr) Genotype And Childhood Trauma Are Associated With Individual Differences In Decision Making, Scott Stoltenberg

Scott F. Stoltenberg

The factors that influence individual differences in decision making are not yet fully characterized, but convergent evidence is accumulating that implicates serotonin (5-HT) system function. Therefore, both genes and environments that influence serotonin function are good candidates for association with risky decision making. In the present study we examined associations between common polymorphisms in the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4; 5-HTTLPR and rs25531), the experience of childhood trauma and decision making on the Iowa gambling task (IGT) in 391 (64.5% female) healthy Caucasian adults. Homozygosity for the 5-HTTLPR L allele was associated with riskier decision making in the first block of …

Body Adiposity In Later Life And The Incidence Of Dementia: The Health In Men Study, Brian Power, Helman Alfonso, Leon Flicker, Graeme Hankey, Bu Yeap, Osvaldo Almeida

Brian Power

Objective
To determine if adiposity in later life increases dementia hazard.
Methods
Cohort
study of 12,047 men aged 65–84 years living in Perth, Australia.
Adiposity exposures were baseline body mass index (BMI), waist
circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). We used the Western
Australian Data Linkage System (WADLS) to establish the presence of new
cases of dementia between 1996 and 2009 according to the International
Classification of Diseases (ICD). Crude and adjusted hazard ratio (HR,
95% confidence interval, 95%CI) of dementia for each adiposity marker
was calculated using Cox regression models. Other measured factors
included age, marital status, education, alcohol …

Genome-Wide Association Study Using Extreme Truncate Selection Identifies Novel Genes Affecting Bone Mineral Density And Fracture Risk, Emma Duncan, Patrick Danoy, John Kemp, Paul Leo, Eugene Mcclosky, Geoffrey Nicholson, Richard Eastell, Richard Prince, John Eisman, Graeme Jones

John Eisman

Oteoporotic fracture is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Low bone mineral density
(BMD) is a major predisposing factor to fracture and is known to be highly heritable. Site-, gender-,
and age-specific genetic effects on BMD are thought to be significant, but have largely not been
considered in the design of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of BMD to date. We report here a
GWAS using a novel study design focusing on women of a specific age (postmenopausal women, age
55–85 years), with either extreme high or low hip BMD (age- and gender-adjusted BMD z-scores of
+1.5 to +4.0, …

John Eisman

Ojectives: Previous fracture prediction models have
been based on the assumption of a stable risk of
subsequent fractures over time. The aim of the present
work was to develop a nomogram for prediction of 5-year
and 10-year individualised absolute fracture risks for
postmenopausal women taking into account the time
relation between fractures.
Methods A population-based prospective study was
performed in 23 general practice centres located in the
southern part of The Netherlands. At baseline
(1992–1994), 4203 postmenopausal women between
50 and 80 years participated and 2372 of them also
participated 10 years later. Baseline measurements
included lumbar spine bone mineral …

Risk Factors For In-Hospital Post-Hip Fracture Mortality, Steven Frost, Nguyen Nguyen, Deborah Black, John Eisman Ao, Tuan Nguyen

John Eisman

Introduction: Approximately 10% of hip fracture patients die during hospitalization; however, it is not clear
what risk factors contribute to the excess mortality. This study sought to examine risk factors of, and todevelop prognostic model for, predicting in-hospital mortality among hip fracture patients.
Methods: We studied outcomes among 410 men and 1094 women with a hip fracture who were admitted to a
major-teaching-hospital in Sydney (Australia) between 1997 and 2007. Clinical data, including concomitantillnesses, were obtained from inpatient data. The primary outcome of the study was in-hospital mortalityregardless of length of stay. A Log-binomial regression model was used to identify …

In October 2006 the CNC Service was implemented as a key element of the WA Cancer
and Palliative Care Network to ensure an integrated approach to cancer care and
delivery in Western Australia (WA). The CNC’s involvement in the patient process was
proposed to: ensure a one-on-one relationship between patient and CNC; facilitate
navigation of the cancer care system; provide a central point for information and
support; provide a direct link into the Cancer and Palliative Care Network’s Tumour
Collaboratives; and all of the benefits that can be achieved through
a multidisciplinary care model. To date there has been modest …

a range of positive outcomes for both consumers and staff. In Australia, the added value
associated with establishing mental health nurse practitioner (MHNP) positions based on this model is
emerging. This paper presents qualitative findings from a study using a mixed-method design to
evaluate an ED-based MHNP outpatient service in Sydney, Australia. In evaluating this new service,
semistructured interviews were conducted with a random selection of study participants and a
stratified sample of ED staff. This is the first of a two-part paper that presents an analysis …

Extract:
Just as history records that military personnel have been carrying heavy loads for over two millennia (Orr, 2010), so too does it show their impact on military force sustainment and combat effectiveness. Around 800BC, the heavy loads carried by Assyrian soldiers reduced their mobility and led them to experiment continually with their shields in order to lighten their loads (Gabriel, 2002). Around 400BC, the long marches of Cyrus’ ‘infamous 10,000’, an army of Greek mercenaries accompanied by Xenophon, would have resulted in numerous stress fractures, torn ligaments, muscle damage, blisters and abrasions. While some of these injuries can be …

Public And Private Justice: Redressing Health Care Harm In Japan, Robert B. Leflar Dec 2010

Public And Private Justice: Redressing Health Care Harm In Japan, Robert B. Leflar

Robert B Leflar

Japanese legal structures addressing health care-related deaths and injuries rely more on public law institutions and rules than do the common-law North American jurisdictions, where private law adjudication is predominant. This article explores four developments in 21st-century Japanese health care law. The first two are in the public law sphere: criminal prosecutions of health care personnel accused of medical errors, and a health ministry-sponsored “Model Project” to analyze medical-practice-associated deaths. The article addresses a private law innovation: health care divisions of trial courts in several metropolitan areas. Finally, the article introduces Japan’s new no-fault program for compensating birth-related obstetrical injuries. …

Extracting Information From Functional Connectivity Maps Via Function-On-Scalar Regression, Philip T. Reiss, Maarten Mennes, Eva Petkova, Lei Huang, Matthew J. Hoptman, Bharat B. Biswal, Stanley J. Colcombe, Xi-Nian Zuo, Michael P. Milham

Lei Huang

Functional connectivity of an individual human brain is often studied by acquiring a resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan, and mapping the correlation of each voxel's BOLD time series with that of a seed region. As large collections of such maps become available, including multisite data sets, there is an increasing need for ways to distill the information in these maps in a readily visualized form. Here we propose a two-step analytic strategy. First, we construct connectivity-distance profiles, which summarize the connectivity of each voxel in the brain as a function of distance from the seed, a functional relationship …

An Analysis Of Applicants Presenting To A Medical Marijuana Specialty Practice In California, Helen Nunberg, Beau Kilmer, Rosalie Liccardo Pacula, James Burgdorf

Rosalie Liccardo Pacula

While 15 states and the District of Columbia provide allowances for medical marijuana, little is known about the individuals who seek a physician’s recommendation to use marijuana. This study provides descriptive information about 1,655 applicants in California who sought a physician’s recommendation for medical marijuana, the conditions for which they sought treatment, and the diagnoses made by the physicians. It presents a systematic analysis of physician records and questionnaires obtained from consecutive applicants seen during a three-month period at nine medical marijuana specialty practices operating throughout the state. The analysis yields insights that may be useful for future research on …

Associations Of Plasma Selenium With Arsenic And Genomic Methylation Of Leukocyte Dna In Bangladesh, Richard J. Pilsner, Megan N. Hall, Xinhua Liu, Habibul Ahsan, Vesna Ilievski, Vesna Slavkovich, Diane Levy, Pam Factor-Litvak, Joseph H. Graziano, Mary V. Gamble

J. Richard Pilsner

Background

Global hypomethylation of DNA is thought to constitute an early event in some cancers and occurs in response to arsenic (As) exposure and/or selenium (Se) deficiency in both in vitro and animal models. In addition, antagonism between As and Se, whereby each reduces toxicity of the other, has been well documented in animal models. Se status may therefore modify the health effects of As in As-exposed populations.

Objective

The primary objectives of our study were to test the hypothesis that Se deficiency is associated with genomic hypomethylation of lymphocyte DNA and to determine whether Se levels are associated with …

The Final Cut: End-Of-Life Empowerment Through Video Documentary, Broderick Fox Dec 2010

The Final Cut: End-Of-Life Empowerment Through Video Documentary, Broderick Fox

Broderick Fox

This article examines assisted video autobiographies that seek to break taboos around visualizing natural death and dying. Turning the camera onto death in one sense posits limit-cases to photographic representation and documentary ethics. The videos in question, however, each propose routes to active, shared authorship in their production that parallel the possibilities for active, agented, and communally-experienced dying and death that have become all-too-rare in Western society. The chapter closes with a meditation on the potentials for and limitations on such independent video discourse around dying and death in the digital age.
