As new developments in medical education move inexorably forward, medical schools are being encouraged to revisit their curricula to ensure quality graduates and match their outcomes against defined standards. These standards may eventually be transferred into global accreditation standards, which allow ‘safe passage’ of graduates from one country to another [Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) 2010. Requiring medical school accreditation for ECFMG certification—moving accreditation forward. Available from: http://www.ecfmg.org/accreditation/rationale.pdf. Gaining much attention is the important standard of social accountability – ensuring that graduates’ competencies are shaped by the health and social needs of the local, national and even international …

The Role Of Research In Art Therapy Master's Degree Programs, Cecile Brennan
Cecile Brennan
Art therapy master's degree programs are required to provide instruction in research theory and methodology, in accordance with art therapy and professional counseling education standards. Although the art therapy standards outline broad, general principles regarding the study of research, the professional counseling standards are more comprehensive and focused on educating graduate students to be adept evaluators and consumers of research. This viewpoint discusses the role of research in the master's degree curriculum and whether it is pedagogically appropriate to require graduate students, who are in the early stages of mastering clinical skills, to conduct independent research. Recommendations are offered based …

Bucindolol: A Pharmacogenomic Perspective On Its Use In Chronic Heart Failure, Neil Smart
Bucindolol: A Pharmacogenomic Perspective On Its Use In Chronic Heart Failure, Neil Smart
Neil Smart
Bucindolol is a non-selective ß-adrenergic receptor blocker with a-1 blocker properties and mild intrinsic sympatholytic activity. The Beta-Blocker Evaluation of Survival Trial (BEST), which is the largest clinical trial of bucindolol in patients with heart failure, was terminated prematurely and failed to show an overall mortality benefit. However, benefits on cardiac mortality and re-hospitalization rates were observed in the BEST trial. Bucindolol has not shown benefits in African Americans, those with significantly low ejection fraction and those in NYHA class IV heart failure. These observations could be due to the exaggerated sympatholytic response to bucindolol in these sub-groups that may …

The 411 On Epileptic Drugs, Bridget Roberts
Bridget R. Roberts
Epilepsy is a neurologic disorder that causes hyperexcitability of the neurons and subsequent seizure activity that ranges from mild alterations in consciousness and muscle twitching to severe tonic-clonic muscle activity, respiratory symptoms, and even death. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, approximately 2 million people in the United States have experienced a seizure or been diagnosed with epilepsy. Fortunately, approximately 70% of those affected by epilepsy experience a significant improvement of or even complete cessation of seizures when appropriate therapy with anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) is maintained.

Specific, Sensitive And Rapid Detection Of Human Plasmodium Knowlesi Infection By Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (Lamp) In Blood Samples, Lau Ling
lau yee ling
Background: The emergence of Plasmodium knowlesi in humans, which is in many cases misdiagnosed by microscopy as Plasmodium malariae due to the morphological similarity has contributed to the needs of detection and differentiation of malaria parasites. At present, nested PCR targeted on Plasmodium ssrRNA genes has been described as the most sensitive and specific method for Plasmodium detection. However, this method is costly and requires trained personnel for its implementation. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), a novel nucleic acid amplification method was developed for the clinical detection of P. knowlesi. The sensitivity and specificity of LAMP was evaluated in comparison to …

Myelopoiesis Related To Perinatal Spleen, Rebecca Hinton, Sawang Petvises, Helen O'Neill

Adult murine spleen is known to have a major role in the development of dendritic cell (DC) subsets, including conventional DC and plasmacytoid DC. In this lab, long-term cultures (LTCs) established from murine spleen support continuous production of novel dendritic-like cells, termed LTC-DC. An in vivo equivalent subset also exists in spleen, namely L-DC. As co-cultures using LTC-derived splenic stroma support the outgrowth of L-DC from spleen and bone marrow sources, it is likely that spleen represents an important niche for DC development. To investigate the appearance of L-DC during ontogeny, spleen was isolated from embryonic and neonatal mice of …

Concentration Of Folate In Colorectal Tissue Biopsies Predicts Prevalence Of Adenomatous Polyps, Andrew Flood, Joel Mason, Zhenhua Liu, Brooks Cash, Arthur Schatzkin, Philip Schoenfeld, Amanda Cross
Zhenhua Liu
Background and aims—Folate has been implicated as a potential etiologic factor for colorectal cancer. Prior research has not adequately exploited concentrations of folate in normal colonic mucosal biopsies to examine the issue. Methods—We used logistic regression models to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of adenoma according to tissue concentration of folate using asymptomatic average-risk women (40–70 years) in a colorectal cancer screening study. Of the 1,593 eligible women who were offered enrollment, 1,483 (93%) participated. Colonoscopy was complete to the cecum in 98.7% (1,463/1,483) of the subjects and normal colonic tissue biopsies were obtained from 813 …

Economic Status And Coping Mechanisms Of Individuals Seeking Hiv Care In Uganda, Sebastian Linnemayr, Brooke Stearns Lawson, Peter Glick, Glenn Wagner
Sebastian Linnemayr
This study uses novel data to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the demographic and economic circumstances facing HIV-positive individuals who have just entered HIV care in Uganda. While the provision of HIV care and ART may improve physical health, to achieve the broader goal of improving the quality of life and socioeconomic viability of people living with HIV/AIDS, appropriate social and economic programs may need to complement treatment. We report results from baseline data of a longitudinal, prospective cohort study with a 12-month follow-up period in two Ugandan HIV clinics. We use t-tests to examine differences across sample subpopulations and …

Transferable Skills Of Incoming Medical Students And Their Development Over The First Academic Year: The United Arab Emirates Experience, Michelle Mclean, Sami Shaban, Deborah Murdoch-Eaton
Michelle McLean
Increasingly, it is being recognised in higher and medical education that learners should be adequately prepared for the unpredictable nature of professional practice. Several generic or transferable skills or capabilities (e.g., communication, information handling) that will enable graduates to function in an ever-changing professional world have been identified. Using a validated inventory comprising six categories of transferable skills, three cohorts of incoming male and female medical students at a Gulf university documented their level of practice and confidence for 31 skills. The exercise was repeated a year later. New medical students identified computer and organisational skills and the ability to …
Caregiving Styles: A Cognitive And Behavioral Typology Associated With Dementia Family Caregiving, Mary Corcoran
Caregiving Styles: A Cognitive And Behavioral Typology Associated With Dementia Family Caregiving, Mary Corcoran
Mary A Corcoran
Purpose: An increasing number of elderly individuals
are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and
related disorders (ADRD), many of whom receive
daily caregiving from spouse or adult child. Caregiving
is a “cultural activity,” and as such it is strongly
influenced by sociocultural beliefs about caregiving
and how it should be enacted. Understanding this
thinking–action process has important implications
for future research and service. Reasoned action theory
provides empirical evidence that attitudes and
beliefs, as they are influenced by the social environment,
predict intentions to act. In turn, behavioral
intentions can reliably predict behaviors. This
grounded theory study describes a typology of …

BACKGROUND:
Suicide bombs in Iraq are a major public health problem. We aimed to describe documented casualties from suicide bombs in Iraq during 2003-10 in Iraqi civilians and coalition soldiers.
METHODS:
In this descriptive study, we analysed and compared suicide bomb casualties in Iraq that were documented in two datasets covering March 20, 2003, to Dec 31, 2010--one reporting coalition-soldier deaths from suicide bombs, the other reporting deaths and injuries of Iraqi civilians from armed violence. We analysed deaths and injuries over time, by bomb subtype and victim demographics.
FINDINGS:
In 2003-10, 1003 documented suicide bomb events caused 19% (42,928 …
