A Dimensional Analysis Of Caregiver Burden Among Spouses And Adult-Children, Marie Savundranayagam, R. Montgomery, K. Kosloski

Marie Y Savundranayagam

Purpose of the study: Caregiver burden is a multidimensional construct, addressing tension and anxiety (stress burden), changes in dyadic relationships (relationship burden), and time infringements (objective burden) resulting from caregiving. The study aims were to assess (a) whether the dimensions of burden were the same for caregiving spouses and adult children, (b) the role of assisting with problem behaviors (PBs) and activities of daily living (ADLs) on each dimension of burden, and (c) the role of each dimension of burden on self-rated health and intention to institutionalize the care receiver. Design and Methods: This study included 280 spouse/partner and 243 …

Tobacco Companies Influence On Youth Smoking Prevalence In Spain (La Influencia De Las Tabaqueras En La Prevalencia De Tabaquismo Entre Los Jóvenes Españoles), Francisco Soto Mas

Francisco Soto Mas

Background: Tobacco companies’ strategies to promote tobacco use and undermine tobacco control policy are key in tobacco use among young people. The analysis of tobacco companies’ internal documents can be instrumental in identifying those strategies, improving social support for tobacco control policy, and planning public health interventions. The goal of this study was to identify and analyze internal documents related to the activities of tobacco companies during the 1980s and 90s aimed at promoting smoking in young Spaniards. Methods: Electronic search by key word of tobacco industry documents held at the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library. Results: More than 1,000 documents …

Radiation Recall Dermatitis Due To Gemcitabine Does Not Suggest The Need To Discontinue Chemotherapy., Michael Lock Dec 2010

Radiation Recall Dermatitis Due To Gemcitabine Does Not Suggest The Need To Discontinue Chemotherapy., Michael Lock

Michael Lock

Lock M, Sinclair K, Welch S, Younus J, Salim M. Source Division of Radiation Oncology, London Regional Cancer Program, London, Ontario N6A 4L6, Canada. Abstract Radiation recall is common following treatment with certain chemotherapy drugs and presents frequently as a skin reaction. With gemcitabine, such a recall phenomenon may affect internal tissues and presents itself as myositis. Although such reactions have previously been reported in the literature, whether or not to continue chemotherapy during such reactions remains controversial. We reported a case of radiation recall in a patient treated with gemcitabine and radiation therapy that presented as myositis. We were …

The Material-Weight Illusion Induced By Expectations Alone, Gavin Buckingham, Nathalie Ranger, Melvyn Goodale Dec 2010

The Material-Weight Illusion Induced By Expectations Alone, Gavin Buckingham, Nathalie Ranger, Melvyn Goodale

Gavin Buckingham

In the material-weight illusion (MWI), equally weighted objects that appear to be made from different materials are incorrectly perceived as having different weights when they are lifted one after the other. Here, we show that continuous visual experience of the lift is not a prerequisite for this compelling misperception of weight; merely priming the lifters' expectations of heaviness is sufficient for them to experience a robust MWI. Furthermore, these expectations continued to influence the load force used to lift MWI-inducing stimuli trial after trial, supporting the notion that vision plays an important role in the skillful lifting of objects.

Michael A. Rogawski

Infantile spasms is an epileptic encephalopathy of early infancy with specific clinical and electroencephalographic (EEG) features, limited treatment options, and a poor prognosis. Efforts to develop improved treatment options have been hindered by the lack of experimental models in which to test prospective therapies. The neuropeptide adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is effective in many cases of infantile spasms, although its mechanism(s) of action is unknown. This review describes the emerging candidate mechanisms that can underlie the therapeutic effects of ACTH in infantile spasms. These mechanisms can ultimately help to improve understanding and treatment of the disease. An overview of current treatments …

Examining Motivation For Charity Sport Event Participation: A Comparison Of Recreation-Based And Charity-Based Motives, Kevin Filo, Daniel Funk, Danny O'Brien

Danny O'Brien

This paper examines the role of recreation motives and motives for charitable giving in the development of participants’ attachment to a charity sport event across two different events. Online questionnaires were administered within a pilot study, and then given to participants in the 2007 Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) LIVESTRONG Challenge (N=568) and the 2007 3M Half Marathon and Relay (N=689). Regression analysis revealed both recreation-based and charity-based motives contribute to attachment to the events. The findings also demonstrate that the charity-based motives make a stronger contribution for the 2007 LAF LIVESTRONG Challenge, while recreation-based motives make a stronger contribution for …

Developing A Global Health Practitioner: Time To Act?, Judy Mckimm, Michelle Mclean Dec 2010

Developing A Global Health Practitioner: Time To Act?, Judy Mckimm, Michelle Mclean

Michelle McLean

Although many health issues transcend national boundaries and require international co-operation, global health is rarely an integral part of the medical curriculum. While medical schools have a social responsibility to train healthcare professionals to serve local communities, the internationalisation of medical education (e.g. international medical students, export of medical curricula or medical schools) makes it increasingly difficult to define it as ‘local’. It is therefore necessary to produce practitioners who can practice medicine in an ever-changing and unpredictable world. These practitioners must be clinically and culturally competent as well as able to use their global knowledge and experience to improve …

Impact Of A Psychoeducational Program On Three Types Of Caregiver Burden Among Spouses, Marie Savundranayagam, R. Montgomery, K. Kosloski, T. Little Dec 2010

Impact Of A Psychoeducational Program On Three Types Of Caregiver Burden Among Spouses, Marie Savundranayagam, R. Montgomery, K. Kosloski, T. Little

Marie Y Savundranayagam

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which a psychoeducational intervention called “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” (PTC) influences burden of spouse caregivers. Specifically, this study examined whether spouse caregivers who attended PTC exhibited reductions in stress burden, relationship burden, and objective burden compared to a comparison group.

Design and Methods The 6 week intervention used a self-efficacy framework to train caregivers to focus on self-care, communicate effectively, and manage emotions. This quasi-experimental study included 115 participants from the PTC group and 95 participants from a comparison group. Assessments were completed before and after the …

Health Development Experiences In Haiti: What Can Be Learned From The Past To Find A Way Forward?, Richard Wamai, Colleen Larkin Dec 2010

Health Development Experiences In Haiti: What Can Be Learned From The Past To Find A Way Forward?, Richard Wamai, Colleen Larkin

Richard G. Wamai

Haiti’s history is marred by neo colonialism, structural violence, dictatorial politics, and severe natural disasters. These social political and geo-ecological factors have played a strong role in shaping the country’s past and current experiences in health and development. This paper overviews Haiti’s recent developments in health in light of the country’s tragic and complex history and comments on the health impact of the 2010 earthquake. In light of this information we draw some general conclusions and recommendations for going forward.

The Role Of Problem Orientation Cognitive Distortions In Depression And Anxiety Intervention For Young Adults., Coralie Wilson Dec 2010

The Role Of Problem Orientation Cognitive Distortions In Depression And Anxiety Intervention For Young Adults., Coralie Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

Interventions that aim to improve social problem-solving skills can significantly reduce the severity of anxiety and depression symptoms in young people. Anxious and depressed individuals often have a negative orientation to problem solution which acts as a barrier to implementing problem-solving skills. Research with older adults suggests that symptoms impair problem-solving abilities through cognitive processes associated with the development of anxiety and depression. In this study we extend previous investigations by assessing the extent to which specific cognitive distortions and symptoms of anxiety and depression are associated with negative problem orientation in a sample of 285 young adults aged 18 …

Rural Adolescents’ Help Seeking Intentions For Emotional Problems: The Influence Of Perceived Benefits And Stoicism., Coralie Wilson Dec 2010

Rural Adolescents’ Help Seeking Intentions For Emotional Problems: The Influence Of Perceived Benefits And Stoicism., Coralie Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

This paper is the second from a larger multi-cite study developed and led by the third author which explores factors that influence adolescents' help-seeking intentions. Specifically, this paper investigates the extent to which perceived benefits of help seeking, stoicism, gender and symptoms of psychological distress are associated with intentions to seek professional help for emotional problems. A cross sectional self-report questionnaire was administered to adolescents recruited from seven high schools in rural towns in the Riverina region of New South Wales. A total of 778 adolescents were recruited. The sample included 373 male and 404 female participants between 13 and …
