Almost Random: Evaluating A Large-Scale Randomized Nutrition Program In The Presence Of Crossover, Sebastian Linnemayr, Harold Alderman Dec 2010

Almost Random: Evaluating A Large-Scale Randomized Nutrition Program In The Presence Of Crossover, Sebastian Linnemayr, Harold Alderman

Sebastian Linnemayr

Large-scale randomized interventions have the potential to uncover the causal effect of programs applying to a large population, thereby improving on the insights gained from currently dominant smaller randomized studies. However, the external validity gained through larger interventions typically risks deviation from the randomization protocol. This paper investigates the impact of the Nutrition Enhancement Program, which aims to improve child nutrition in Senegal. The analysis deals with deviation from the planned treatment and suggests approaches for combining ex-post adjustments such as propensity score matching with the randomized treatment plan. The authors do not detect a strong overall program impact on …

Patients' Experience Post-Lumbar Fusion Regarding Back Problems, Recovery And Expectations In Terms Of The International Classification Of Functioning, Disability And Health, Allan Abbott, Rune Hedland, Raija Tyni-Lenné

Allan D. Abbott

Purpose - To describe within the context of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health ((ICF)), patient's experiences post-lumber fusion regarding back problems, recovery and expectations of rehabilitation and to contrast with the content of outcome measures and the ICF low back pain ((LBP)) core sets.

Methods - The study has a cross-sectional and retrospective design and involves 20 lumbar fusion patients. Using the ICF, qualitative content analysis of semi-structured interviews 3–6 months post-surgery was performed. This was compared with the ICF related content of the Oswestry Disability Index ((ODI)), Medical Outcome Study Short Form 36 ((SF-36)), European Quality …

Surf Tourism, Sport Development And Community Building: Exploring The Nexus In Remote Papua New Guinea., Danny O'Brien Dec 2010

Surf Tourism, Sport Development And Community Building: Exploring The Nexus In Remote Papua New Guinea., Danny O'Brien

Danny O'Brien

This research explores the introduction of a commercial sport tourism venture into a remote community in Papua New Guinea (PNG), and addresses the question, how can sport tourism be used to promote community building in a developing country? The venture specifically focuses on surf tourism, and commenced operation in late 2009 with a mandate to facilitate community development. The surf tourism sector is an integral part of the multibillion dollar global surfing industry (Buckley, 2002), and surf tourists are defined as individuals who travel to destinations for the express purpose of riding surfboards (Dolnicar & Fluker, 2003). Much surf tourism …

Background: Excessive use of antibiotics is worldwide the most important reason for development of antimicrobial resistance. As antibiotic resistance may spread across borders, high prevalence countries may serve as a source of bacterial resistance for countries with a low prevalence. Therefore, bacterial resistance is an important issue with a potential serious impact on all countries. Initiatives have been taken to improve the quality of antibiotic prescribing in primary care, but only few studies have been designed to determine the effectiveness of multifaceted strategies across countries with different practice setting. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of …

Grammatical Morphology In School-Age Children With And Without Language Impairment: A Discriminant Function Analysis, Maura Jones Moyle, Courtney Karasinski, Susan Ellis Weismer, Brenda Gorman

Courtney Karasinski

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test Bedore and Leonard’s (1998) proposal that a verb morpheme composite may hold promise as a clinical marker for specific language impairment (SLI) in English speakers and serve as an accurate basis for the classification of children with and without SLI beyond the preschool level.

Method: The language transcripts of 50 school-age children with SLI (Mage = 7;9 [years;months]) and 50 age-matched typically developing peers (Mage = 7;9) were analyzed. Following the Bedore and Leonard (1998) procedure, 3 variables were measured: a finite verb morpheme composite, a noun morpheme composite, and mean …

Learning From Mistakes: Improving Initial Fingertip Force Scaling By Observing Lifting Errors, Gavin Buckingham, Minnie Tang, Paul Gribble, Melvyn Goodale Dec 2010

Learning From Mistakes: Improving Initial Fingertip Force Scaling By Observing Lifting Errors, Gavin Buckingham, Minnie Tang, Paul Gribble, Melvyn Goodale

Gavin Buckingham

• When lifting objects that are lighter or heaver than we expect them to be, individuals typically misapply forces in a way that reflects their prior expectations of heaviness.

• Because we lift in this predictive way, large and small cubes elicit these characteristic errors even when they are adjusted to have equal mass. Lifters will apply too much force to a large cube and substantially less force to a small cube – errors that are rapidly corrected with repeated lifts (Flanagan & Beltzner, 2000).

• When watching others lift objects, an observer’s motor system automatically reacts in a way …

A Dimensional Analysis Of Caregiver Burden Among Spouses And Adult-Children, Marie Savundranayagam, R. Montgomery, K. Kosloski

Marie Y Savundranayagam

Purpose of the study: Caregiver burden is a multidimensional construct, addressing tension and anxiety (stress burden), changes in dyadic relationships (relationship burden), and time infringements (objective burden) resulting from caregiving. The study aims were to assess (a) whether the dimensions of burden were the same for caregiving spouses and adult children, (b) the role of assisting with problem behaviors (PBs) and activities of daily living (ADLs) on each dimension of burden, and (c) the role of each dimension of burden on self-rated health and intention to institutionalize the care receiver. Design and Methods: This study included 280 spouse/partner and 243 …

A Phase Ii Trial Of Arc-Based Hypofractionated Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy In Localized Prostate Cancer, Michael Lock Dec 2010

A Phase Ii Trial Of Arc-Based Hypofractionated Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy In Localized Prostate Cancer, Michael Lock

Michael Lock

Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate acute and late genitourinary (GU) and gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity and biochemical control of hypofractionated, image-guided (fiducial markers or ultrasound guidance), simplified intensity-modulated arc therapy for localized prostate cancer. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This Phase II prospective clinical trial for T1a-2cNXM0 prostate cancer enrolled 66 patients who received 63.2 Gy in 20 fractions over 4 weeks. Fiducial markers were used for image guidance in 30 patients and daily ultrasound for the remainder. Toxicity was scored according to the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 3.0. RESULTS: Median follow-up was 36 months. Acute Phase Grade …
