Cytokines And Ovulation In The Mouse Ovary, Jong G. Kim
Cytokines And Ovulation In The Mouse Ovary, Jong G. Kim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ovulation has been hypothesized as an inflammatory process. Interleukin(IL)-1$\alpha$, IL-1$\beta$ and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-$\alpha$ are potent cytokines produced from macrophages and various other cell types, and are pivotal components of inflammation. Although previous studies have investigated cytokine activities in the reproductive system, there is little information on their precise localization and activities during the periovulatory period. To investigate the role of cytokines in ovulation, experiments were designed to determine the immunohistochemical localization and time specific production of cytokines IL-1 and TNF-$\alpha$ using a mouse model at 36h, 12h, 6h, 2h before ovulation, and at 6h and 18h after ovulation in …

The Utility Of Magnetic Stimulation In Peripheral Nerve Study, Wang-Lin Su, Baii-Jia Yang
The Utility Of Magnetic Stimulation In Peripheral Nerve Study, Wang-Lin Su, Baii-Jia Yang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Clinically, we were occasionally asked to evaluate peripheral nerve injuries in patients whose local cutaneous conditions, such as burn wound, crushing wound, skin graft, and gauze overlying limb, were not suitable for percutaneous electrical stimulation or needle EMG. Could the magnetic stimulation be used in these conditions? How much potential deviation could be produced with this technique when the limbs were covered by gauze? Its our purpose to solve these questions.Thirteen young volunteers participated in this tudy. First, we performed the motor and sensory NCV with percutaneous electrical stimulation. Then, the magnetic stimulation was performed with Cadwell MES-10, 9cm pointed …

The dysfunction or pathomechanics of sacroiliac joint is a common cause of low back pain. The sacroiliac joints are nonweight bearing joints that function to absorb forces from various directions. Pyogenic infection of the sacroiliac joint resulted in limited hip mobility and pain when the peivis was compressed. The first case was diagnosed as septic arthritis and reported.Infectious processes in the retroperitoneal space often involve the iliopsoas muscle. The infection usually is secondary to other intra-abdominal or intra-pelvic inflammatory processes However they rarely arise primarily within the retroperitoneum. These primary infections occur most often in younger patients and usually will …

A female of age 30 years developed a muscular weakness in proximal extremities during 2 years and responded poorly to steroid treatment. Creatine kinase in isoenzymic MM form was markedly elevated according to a serum muscle enzyme test. Electromyography examination showed a myopathic feature. Histopathological tests in muscle biopsy specimens revealed prominent cytoplasmic vacuoles rimmed by basophilic granules under space optical microscopy, and abundant intranuclear filamentous inclusions in electron microscopy. These clinical features and athological especially electron microscopic findings are considered to be of paramount importance for the diagnosis of inclusion body myositis.

Sexual dysfunction Wth erectile disability is a common complication in spinal cord injured males. Usually their erectile dysfunction are neurogenic in originn. We have begun to apply intra-cavernous injection of prostaglandin E1(PGE1) for management of erectile dysfunction in spinal cord injuries since 1991 and encouraging results have been achieved. We report here a case of chronic spinal cord injury with vasogenic erectile dysfunction who does not respond to intracaver-nous PGE1 injection. We want to clarify that the use of intracavernous PGE1 injection in application to cavernosography and penile blood flow study is of great value in differential diagnosis of erectile …

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a life-threatening disease with variable manifestations and thus early diagnosis is difficult among the spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. There are still no clinical reports or statistical data about the PE in SCI patients in Taiwan. However, the incidence of PE in SCI patients was higher than that in general population according to the reports in western countries, and early prevention, diagnosis and treatment were documented to reduce the morbidity and mortality. So the doctor should keep alert to the possible PE in the SCI patients especially when there are new-onset symptoms or signs. Here we …

Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Low back pain is the nation's leading cause of disability. Differential diagnosis of a low back injwy can be complicated and uncommon disorders can be overlooked. Many of the signs and symptoms related to low back pain may in fact be caused by sacroiliac dysfunction. Reliability of the current clinical tests for detection of sacroiliac involvement has been of concern. Recently more focus has been given to the use of pelvic tilt measurement as a source of clinical information on the sacroiliac joint. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation of unilateral sacroiliac dysfunction with asymmetrical changes …
