Destructive Hostility: The Jeffrey Dahmer Case: A Psychiatric And Forensic Study Of A Serial Killer, Jeffrey Jentzen, George Palermo, L. Thomas Johnson, Khang-Cheng Ho, K. Alan Stormo, John Teggatz

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

We were involved as forensic experts in the case of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. We discuss the scene and victim autopsy findings, with a brief consideration of the basic emotion of hostility. These findings support the thesis that at the basis of this serial killer's behavior were primary unconscious feelings of hate that he had channeled into a sadistic programmed destruction of 17 young men. The interview of the serial killer, the photographic scene documentation, and the autopsy findings stress the ambivalent homosexuality of the killer, his sexual sadism, his obsessive fetishism, and his possible cannibalism and necrophilia.

Progressive Cross-Linking Of Fibrin Gamma Chains Increases Resistance To Fibrinolysis, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson Nov 1994

Progressive Cross-Linking Of Fibrin Gamma Chains Increases Resistance To Fibrinolysis, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

In the presence of plasma transglutaminase (factor XIIIa) fibrin first undergoes intermolecular covalent cross-linking between its gamma chains to create gamma dimers followed by slower cross-linking among its alpha chains to form alpha polymers. Progressive cross-linking of gamma chain dimers occurs at the slowest rate, resulting in gamma trimers and gamma tetramers (“gamma multimers”). Most studies indicate that cross-linked fibrin clots become resistant to fibrinolysis, but the basis for this event is not clear. In this study, we explored the role of gamma chain multimerization compared with alpha polymerization as causal factors in time-dependent development of resistance to fibrinolysis. Fibrin …

Developing Consistency In Enamel Etching By Co2 Laser, Cesar Gonzalez, Kenneth L. Zakariasen Sep 1994

Developing Consistency In Enamel Etching By Co2 Laser, Cesar Gonzalez, Kenneth L. Zakariasen

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

It has been reported that CO2 laser energy can be utilized to etch enamel. However, consistency of etching has been a significant problem. This research was designed to ascertain which exposure parameters result in consistent etching of enamel. Fourteen non.carious teeth were selected and a 2x4 gridwork was cut into the buccal surfaces creating eight discrete windows for laser exposures. Four teeth served for the initial pilot project. Two windows were lased at each combination of exposure parameters. Laser exposures were at .01, .02, .05, or .10 sec. at 2, 5, 10, or 15 Watts (W) with a model …

Spiritual Well-Being, Self-Esteem And Intimacy Among Couples Using Natural Family Planning, Richard Fehring, Donna M. Lawrence

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Making decisions about achieving and avoiding pregnancy and the methods used to attain those ends are some of the most central decisions during a couple's reproductive life. Health professionals (especially professional nurses) are often consulted to aid couples in their reproductive decisions and provide couples with choices of reproductive control. Information provided on family planning choices, however, is often limited and usually involves issues of effectiveness to avoid pregnancy, convenience, health risks, and life-style preferences.1,2 Little information is provided on how family planning methods compare on psychological, spiritual, and social well-being variables. One method of family planning that needs further …

Antibacterial Effects Of A Silver Electrode Carrying Microamperage Direct Current In Vitro, Poh Chye Young, Luther C. Kloth, Linda Jean Laatsch-Lybeck

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

Currently, electrical stimulation is an accepted method used clinically to promote chronic wound healing. A literature review revealed that similar therapeutic current has been shown to suppress growth of common wound pathogens in vitro and in vivo. To date, little has been reported on the factors contributing to the antibacterial effects of microamperage direct current (μADC) stimulation. The purpose of this project was to investigate the role of electric field strength, current density, pH, and type of electrode used in vitro, to gain a better understanding of how these factors contribute to inhibiting growth of select wound pathogens. …

Use Effectiveness Of The Creighton Model Ovulation Method Of Natural Family Planning, Richard Fehring, Donna M. Lawrence, Connie Philpot May 1994

Use Effectiveness Of The Creighton Model Ovulation Method Of Natural Family Planning, Richard Fehring, Donna M. Lawrence, Connie Philpot

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

OBJECTIVE: To determine the use effectiveness of the Creighton model ovulation method in avoiding and achieving pregnancy. DESIGN: Prospective, descriptive. SETTING: A natural family planning clinic at a university nursing center. PARTICIPANTS: Records and charts from 242 couples who were taught the Creighton model. The sample represented 1,793 months of use of the model. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Creighton model demographic forms and logbook. RESULTS: At 12 months of use, the Creighton model was 98.8% method effective and 98.0% use effective in avoiding pregnancy. It was 24.4% use effective in achieving pregnancy. The continuation rate for the sample at 12 months …

Information Needs Prior To Breast Biopsy, Christine Shaw, Sarah A. Wilson, Maureen O'Brien May 1994

Information Needs Prior To Breast Biopsy, Christine Shaw, Sarah A. Wilson, Maureen O'Brien

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Biopsy is the definitive diagnostic procedure for breast cancer. The fear of cancer may make the breast biopsy itself a distressing experience for women and their significant others. Information seeking is believed to be a primary mode of coping with distressful events. The purpose of this study was to describe the information needs of women and their significant others prior to a breast biopsy and to explore the influence of information on the breast biopsy experience. Semistructured, audiotape-recorded interviews with 11 women and 8 significant others were conducted prior to breast biopsy, and categories arising from the data were developed …
