In patients with upper motor neuron dieases. they usually present with variable degrees of spasticity. Moderate and severe degree of spasticity will interfere with patients' function and cause great difficulty in daily care. The incidence of musculoskeletal deformity which requires surgical correction is also higher in patients with severe spasticity. There were 43 patients with upper motor neuron diseases, which included 34 patients with cerebral palsy. 5 patients with cerebrovascular diseases and 2 patients with head injury. In-toeing and Out-toeing are common prblems in children, but the treatment is contraversy. From 1st May 1987 to Jan 1990.243 childrens with problems of in-toeing have been treated in ourrehabilitation department with reversla splint. Only 95 cases of in-toeing and 11 cases of out-toeing (age from 2 y 1m to 5y 4m) were included in this series with completely folow up. The foot progression angle(FPA)of in-toeing cases is a range of -24°~-38°. The FPA of toeing out cases ia a range of +24°~+40° . After reversal splint wearing in traction-in method. This study was aimed to find the difference of sensory and motor never conduction velosity (NCV) of median nerve before, and after the irradiation by Helium-Neon (HeNe) and Gallium arsenide (GaAs) laser upto 24 hours and the difference of effects induced by two different lasers- Twenty five healthy volunteers. 17 males and 8 females, with average age 25.2 years old. average body height 167.4 cm. were assigned randomly into two groups. Effect Of The Armband On Wrist And Grip Strength And Pain In Subjects With Tennis Elbow, Chen-Liang Chou, Chin-Chuan Kao, Tcho-Jen Liu, Tao-Chang Hsu

This study investigated the effect of the armband on wrist and grip strength and pain of 31 subjects with tennis elbow. There were 15subjects using manufactured armband and the other 16subjects using Velcro. We use BTE machine and visual pain analogue scale to assess wrist & grip strength and level of pain, respectively.There were statistically significant increase in wrist extension & grip strength and decrease in pain sensation in both groups. There were no different effects between these two groups except in wrist flexion strength. The using of armband is indicated in subjects with tennis elbow.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of lumbar traction on the management of grade I L-spine spondylolisthesis. 45 patients diagnosed as grade I L-spine spondylolisthesis by x-ray were studied and divided into two groups. 19 patients as control group, received short wave diathermy and William's flexion exercise, five times per week for 2 months' period. 26 patients as experimental group, in addition to receive the same programs as the control group, the intermittent lumbar traction with 1/3-5/12 body weight was prescribed.The assessments were taken at initial (before treatment), 2 weeks and 2 months after treatment. 8 …

Low back pain is the most common clinical complaint next to upper respiratory tract infection in aged people. Previous episodes of low back pain in young adults predispose to exacerbation and chronic problems in the elderly. This study was carried out on 478 cases aged above 65 who took computerized tomography of lumbar spine at Taichung Veterans General Hospital from Sep. 1988 to Sep. 1990. These cases consisted of 391 males and 81 females. While the WISC-R is the most widely adopted measurement of intelligence in various eductaional and clinical settings, administering and scoring the ten-subtest battery could be time-consuming, and thus uneconomical, for certain purposes of patient placement or classification. ศึกษาภาพถ่ายเอ็กซเรย์ช่องอกและลักษณะคลื่นไฟฟ้าหัวใจ (ECG) ของสุนัข 35 ตัวที่มีตัวอ่อนของพยาธิหัวใจ (microfilaria) ในกระแสโลหิต เปรียบเทียบกับสุนัข 15 ตัวที่ตรวจไม่พบ microfilaria และไม่มีอาการของโรคพยาธิหัวใจ พบว่าสุนัขที่มี microfilaria 27 ตัว มีอายุไม่น้อยกว่า 4 ปี สุนัขทุกตัวที่ตรวจพบ microfilaria จะมีความผิดปกติของหัวใจ ทั้งที่วินิจฉัยจากภาพเอ็กซเรย์ และจาก ECG สุนัขที่มี ECG ผิดปกติมีจำนวนแตกต่างจากกลุ่มที่ตรวจไม่พบ microfilaria อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ ในขณะที่จำนวนสุนัขที่มีลักษณะของหัวใจผิดปกติในภาพ เอ็กซเรย์ไม่แตกต่างกัน ภาพเอ็กซเรย์ของสุนัขที่มีพยาธิหัวใจส่วนใหญ่แสดง right heart enlargement, lung edema, pulmonary knob, และ whole heart enlargement พบว่า ECG สามารถวินิจฉัยพยาธิสภาพของหัวใจได้ละเอียดกว่าภาพถ่ายเอ็กซเรย์ สุนัขส่วนใหญ่มี cardiac rhythm ผิดปกติคือ bundle branch block หรือ ventricular premature beat และพบ right atrial hypertrophy, right ventricular hypertrophy a myocardial stress

Sympathetic skin response (SSR) test is a newly introduced technique to assess sympatetic function in measuring sudomotor activity of the skin. This test is applicable in the detection of autonomic dysfunction which is a usual complaint of diabetic patients. Forty-four diabetic patients with age ranging from 38to 79 years (mean, 60 years ) and 20age-matched normal controls attended this study. Long-distance cycling may result in ulnar neuropaty due to ulnar nerve compression adjacent to the ulnar tunnel (of Guyon). The purpose of this study is to determine the type. incidence, and severity of ulnar neuropathy in cyclists. Forteen Asian Games cyclists completed a questionnaire and underwent hand grip strength test and electrodiagnostic studies of the ulnar nerves. According to the results of the electrodiagnostic studies there were 9 cyclists have mild ulnar neuropathy which included ulnar neuropathy adjacent to the ulnar tunnel (5 cases) and the cubital tunnel syndrome (5 cases). Cervical F wave dispersion was studied in 40 cerebral stroke patients with spastic hemiparesis (Lt hemi 13. Rt hemi 27. onset duration average 10.7 months ). Twenty consecutive supramaximal electrical stimulations on median nerve and recorded the F wave simultaneously from anterior deltoid (C5), biceps brachii (C6),flexor carpi radialis (C7), and abductor pollicis brevis (C) muscles.These muscles were performed at lesion and sound sides in each patient. A preliminary study was designed to assess the health maintenance and care needs of the elderly attending the Government Employee Combined Clinic in Tainan City. Interviews using structured questionnaire were conducted on persons aged 65 years and over from April 9 to April 21 1990.There were 483 persons included. Two hundred and ninety three subjects (60.7%) were men. The mean age of the studied population was 72 years, ranging from 65 to 87 years. The mean duration of education was 9.0 years. Spinal epidure hemorrhage is rare. It is often misdiagnosed and mistreated, and may result in severe paraplegia or death. Abort half of the cases reported in the literature had identifiable causes. Among these, trauma and anticoagulant therapy were most frequently encountered. The others were known as spontaneous spinal epidural hemorrhage. We report here 3 cases treated in NTUH. Their symptoms included sudden onset of severe localized back pain and flaccid paralysis of lower extremities which progressed within minutes to days. Eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies or Bollinger bodies were visualized histologically in hypertrophied epithelial cells of epidermis of an eyelid of a tucuman Amazon parrot (Amazona tucumata). Material prepared from an eyelid was inoculated onto the chorio-allantoic membrance (CAM) of ten-day-old embryonated hen eggs. Bollinger bodies were visualized histologically from pock-like lesions on the CAM. Electron microscopy revealed typical poxvirus in the inclusions.

An instrument for clinical measurement of bone mineral content in the axial skeleton was contructed, components including a modified dual probe scanner, a PC/AT type computer system, a 153 Gd source, and a detector. Bone mineral density of the femoral neck bilateral was measured using Dual Photon Absorptiometry (DPA) in 50 male cerebral vascular accident (CVA) patients. The femoral neck bone density was expressed as grams mineral per unit skeletal area (g/cm2). The modification of a new design in orthosis usually has its clinical indication. In this study, a low temperature thermoplastic AFO was designed in anterior leaf type, called MIT (metatarsal into tibial )AFO, basically to meet the need of indoors barefoot walking in Taiwan. It could be easily molded and remolded to fit the foot, as well as to adjust the position of foot and ankle.Sixty-eight patients with acute hemiplegia were fitted with this MIT-AFO during ambulation training, 46had good fitting (67.6%), 15 in fair grade (22.1%), and 7 in poor grade (10.3%).
