Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The modification of a new design in orthosis usually has its clinical indication. In this study, a low temperature thermoplastic AFO was designed in anterior leaf type, called MIT (metatarsal into tibial )AFO, basically to meet the need of indoors barefoot walking in Taiwan. It could be easily molded and remolded to fit the foot, as well as to adjust the position of foot and ankle.Sixty-eight patients with acute hemiplegia were fitted with this MIT-AFO during ambulation training, 46had good fitting (67.6%), 15 in fair grade (22.1%), and 7 in poor grade (10.3%). Two patients were observed to have ankle …

Phenol Intramuscular Neurolysis In The Management Of Spasticity, Tsui-Fen Yang, Tao-Chung Hsu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
In patients with upper motor neuron dieases. they usually present with variable degrees of spasticity. Moderate and severe degree of spasticity will interfere with patients' function and cause great difficulty in daily care. The incidence of musculoskeletal deformity which requires surgical correction is also higher in patients with severe spasticity. There were 43 patients with upper motor neuron diseases, which included 34 patients with cerebral palsy. 5 patients with cerebrovascular diseases and 2 patients with head injury. Phenol intramuscular neurolysis were performed in the muscle groups with moderate to severe spasticity that interferes with function and daily care in these …

A Preliminary Study In Post-Stroke Depression, Wang-Lin Su, Baii-Jia Yang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Although post-stroke depression is well recognized as a barrier to recovery after stroke, there remains uncertainty about it's prevalence. etiology and associated factors.Sixty one patients admitted to Mackay Memorial Hospital with the first CVA attack and consulted with rehabilitation were studied. Mood assessment was made 2 weeks after stroke with Zung's depression scale. We sued the ZDS score 55 as a cut-off point for depresion and found the prevalence of post- stroke depression is 37.7%. with 13.1% being severe depression. The functional disability is significantly correlated with post-stroke depression, but age, sex. whether medical insurance or not, weakness side and …

Abbreviated Version Of The Chinese Wisc-R--A Multiple Regression Study, Ling-Yee Cheng, Pai-Fan Wang, Nai-Wen Quo, Tao-Chang Hsu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
While the WISC-R is the most widely adopted measurement of intelligence in various eductaional and clinical settings, administering and scoring the ten-subtest battery could be time-consuming, and thus uneconomical, for certain purposes of patient placement or classification. Hence to construct an abbreviated form of WISC-R with satisfactory reliability and validity would be productive for improving efficiency and cutting expenses. The present study analyzed 98 WISC-R protocols with an stepwise multiple regression analysis to identify, from the whole battery, an minimal pool of subtests for making up an abbreviated test such that scores of which would predict the full scale IQ score …

Evaluation Of Private Long-Term Care Facilities In Kaohsiung, Gwo-Jau Chen, Hsin-Ying Chen, Tseu-Zu Guo, Hsing-Zong Wu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
In recent years, the upgrading of both quality of medical care and standard of living in Taiwan has resulted in the rapid growth of elderly population. The care of such diseases associated with aging as cerebrovascular disease, senile dementia, cardiovascular disease and degenerative neurological changes has thus became major medical and social problems in our country. Those elderly individuals who suffer from the diseases mentioned above, usually require bedrest and consequently lose their selfcare abilities. The demand for caregivers, which is a relatively big burden on society and its economics, will thus increase. In responding to this practical need, several private …

Spinal Epidural Hemorrhage Three Cases Report And Literature Review, Huey-Jen Lay, Chein-Wei Chang, I-Nan Lien
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Spinal epidure hemorrhage is rare. It is often misdiagnosed and mistreated, and may result in severe paraplegia or death. Abort half of the cases reported in the literature had identifiable causes. Among these, trauma and anticoagulant therapy were most frequently encountered. The others were known as spontaneous spinal epidural hemorrhage. We report here 3 cases treated in NTUH. Their symptoms included sudden onset of severe localized back pain and flaccid paralysis of lower extremities which progressed within minutes to days. In case 1, early spinal decompression minimized the possible neurological sequelae. In case 2, hematoma occurred in the lower thoracic …

The Malignant Neoplasm Of Head Complicating With Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction/Disorder: Two Cases Report, Shin-Tsu Chang, Yau-Jen Tseng
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The temporomandibular joint dysfunction/disorder(TMD) is a complexity of facial occulsional abnormality, manifested as symptoms of trismus, opening noisy, limitation of range of motion, painful swelling around periarticular area, and local spasm or tenderness over masticatory musculacture. The TMD is now regarded as being multifactorial in its aetiology. The tumor invasion is a rare cause and is often neglected. Two cases of malignant neoplasm of head complicating with TMD which masking the original lesion are reported. The one is cancer of maxillary sinus and the other nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The two cases could not be detected earlier, ensuing with bony metastasis after …

Poxvirus Infection In A Tucuman Amazon Parrtot (Amazona Tucumata) : A Case Report, Jiroj Sasipreeyajan
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies or Bollinger bodies were visualized histologically in hypertrophied epithelial cells of epidermis of an eyelid of a tucuman Amazon parrot (Amazona tucumata). Material prepared from an eyelid was inoculated onto the chorio-allantoic membrance (CAM) of ten-day-old embryonated hen eggs. Bollinger bodies were visualized histologically from pock-like lesions on the CAM. Electron microscopy revealed typical poxvirus in the inclusions.
