The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The Laguna Madre in Mexico is a nursery, growth, and refuge area for shrimp and other wildlife species. These organisms support an important fishery for local industry (third place in Mexico), which may suffer diseases that are few studied. Wild shrimp were randomly collected from two sampling stations (Carrizal and Carbonera) once a month for one year (September 2007 to September 2008) to screen for virus and bacteria. The shrimp were taxonomically identified, organized in pools of three organisms per species and analyzed for the presence of WSSV, IHHNV, NHP and HPV by a commercial multiplex PCR kit DiagXotics Inc. …

Comparison Of The Efficacy Of Enrofloxacin Against Escherichia Coli Or Pasteurella Multocida Infection In Chickens, Visut Rawiwet, Piyarat Chansiripornchai, Niwat Chansiripornchai

This study compared the efficacy of enrofloxacin, given immediately or 6 hrs after infection against Escherichia coli or Pasteurella multocida. In the first experiment, thirty, 12-week-old male layer chickens were divided into 3 groups of 10 each. Chickens in group 1, 2 and 3 were infected with E. coli serotype O78 by left thoracic air sac injection. Group 1 was given enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg), dissolved in drinking water immediately receiving E. coli. Group 2 was given enrofloxacin 6 hrs after receiving E. coli. The Contribution Of Active Efflux In Reduced Susceptibilities To Copper Sulfate And Zinc Chloride In Escherichia Coli Isolates From Swine, Chailai Koowatananukul, Nisit Chansong, Rungtip Chuanchuen

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A hundred-eighty Escherichia coli isolates from swine were tested for minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 9 antimicrobials and two heavy metals copper sulfate and zinc chloride. All the E. coli isolates were resistant to at least one antibiotic and 175 (97.2%) isolates were multi-drug resistant. Forty antibiotic resistance patterns were identified, of which the most common pattern was AMP-CHP-CIP-ERY-GEN-STR-SUL-TET-TRI (13.3%). All the isolates formed one large population of susceptibility to copper sulfate and zinc chloride at the concentrations of 6.4-12.8 mM and 3.2-6.4 mM, respectively. Exposure to copper sulfate and zinc chloride at sublethal concentration did not change the susceptibility. …

The association between severity of heart disease and serum N-terminal prohormone B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) was determined in dogs presented with respiratory distress. Four groups of dogs were divided into healthy control (n=11), heart failure (n=58), heart disease without heart failure (n=17) and respiratory disease (n=20). Serum NT-proBNP concentrations were measured with an ELISA designed for using in dogs. Dirofilaria antigen tests were detected in dogs with heart disease or heart failure. Myxomatous degenerative mitral valve disease (MVD) is the most common cardiac disease in dogs.Pathological changes of MVD include thickened redundant leaflets causing improper coaptation of leaflets, resultingin mitral valve regurgitation. The etiology of this disease is currently unknown. Thus, no drugs or treatments areavailable to slow down the disease progression. Comparison of analgesic efficacy of 3 non-steroidal analgesic drugs (carprofen, vedaprofen and tepoxalin) were performed in 40 dogs after ovariohysterectomy. Oral administration of placebo (sugar pill), carprofen (4.4 mg/kg/day), vedaprofen (0.5 mg/kg/day), or tepoxalin (20 mg/kg/day) for 3 days were performed in dogs recovering from ovariohysterectomy. Numerical pain scores (descriptive and composite pain scores) were measured in blinded fashion by three investigators at 0, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 hrs following the recovery. The average descriptive and composite pain scores of dogs treated with carprofen or tepoxalin were significantly lower than that of the control group (p<0.05), however, no significance difference was found between the vedaprofen-treated and control groups (p>0.05). Lateral Patellar Luxation In Three Pomeranian Dogs: A Case Report, Chalika Wangdee, Pinrath Torwattanachai

Three Pomeranians with bilateral lateral patellar luxation (LPL) were present at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. Trochlear block recession was performed on all the dogs. The additional procedures including lateral retinacular desmotomy, tibial derotation, imbrication of medial retinaculum, and/or proximal tube realignment. Medial transposition of the tibial tuberosity was additionally done in one dog. Recurrent right LPL was found and corrected in one leg of the second dog. Following at least 3 months, all three dogs walked, jumped, and put weight normally on the operated legs after the operation.

The present study was performed to investigate the in vivo fertility of frozen-thawed (FT) boar semen after intra-uterine (IUI) and deep intra-uterine insemination (DIUI) in spontaneously-ovulating sows. A total of 48 weaned sows were included. The sows were divided into three groups, i.e. natural mating (NM) (n=30), IUI (n=9) and DIUI (n=9). In the IUI and DIUI groups, the sows were inseminated twice, at 24 and 36 h after the detection of oestrous by IUI with 2x109 spermatozoa/dose or DIUI with 1x109 spermatozoa/dose. The aim of this report is to describe the clinical, radiographic and pathological appearances of a persistent gastroesophageal intussusception in associated with idiopathic egaesophagus in an adult dog. A 6-years old, male Golden Retriever was referred for evaluation of chronic regurgitation and vomiting. Radiographic diagnosis of persistent gastroesophageal intussusception (GEI) with megaesophagus was made. Water temperature was set up at 2 levels; high (Ht, 29.5±0.5oC) and low temperature (Lt, 19.5±0.5oC). Experimental catfish body weight and total length were 12.07±1.41 g and 11.57±0.62 cm respectively. Catfish were divided into 4 groups: high temperature with 0.1% sodium chloride (NaCl) (HtWs), high temperature without 0.1% NaCl (HtW/s), low temperature with 0.1% NaCl (LtWs), and low temperature without 0.1% NaCl (LtW/s). Canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection in stray dogs was studied by using parasitological (fresh blood smear, thin blood smear, thick blood smear, and modified Knott’s test) and serological methods. Blood samples were collected from stray dogs in Bangkok metropolitan area during 2006 and 2008. There were 10% (50/500) of stray dogs infected with D. immitis, which was indicated by using parasitological methods. Microfilaria levels were evaluated from 36 infected dogs and the range of microfilarial levels were between 17 and 78,417 microfilariae per milliliter of blood. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the damage of DNA of the frozen-thawed (FT) boar spermatozoa and to investigate the effect of various concentrations of L-cysteine supplementation on the sperm DNA damage. A total of 104 cryopreserved semen samples from twenty-six ejaculates of 16 proven boars were analyzed. Of these samples, each semen sample contained a different concentration of L-cysteine i.e., 0 (n=41), 5 (n=41), 10 (n=11) and 15 (n=11) mM. In order to isolate local strain of spore-forming bacteria having probiotic properties, 164 isolates of the sporeforming bacteria were isolated from 152 samples including duodenum, jejunum, ileum and cecum collected from 38 local backyard chickens raised in the northern part of Thailand. These isolates were preliminarily screened for antibiotic susceptibility and antimicrobial acitivity. Only antibiotic-susceptible isolates with antimicrobial activity were further characterized for the ability to resist certain harsh environments. Identification of the potential isolates was carried out by morphological and biochemical studies, followed by analysis of 16S rDNA sequence. The present study aims to study the localization of steroid receptor, oestrogen receptor alpha and progesterone receptor by immunohistochemical technique in the reproductive organs of prepubertal culling gilts with reproductive disturbance. The genital organs from 20 culled gilts before puberty were collected. Historical data, reasons of culling and the macroscopic lesions of the reproductive tracts were recorded. The results of immunohistochemistry revealed that the expression of ER and PR was lower in prepubertal gilts with reproductive lesion compared to normal gilts. Unilateral Polydactylism In A German Holstein-Friesian Calf - A Case Report, Bianca Carstanjen, Juliane Pennecke, Sara Boehart, Kerstin E. Müller

This case report describes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of unilateral polydactylism of unknown origin in a calf. A six-week-old female German Holstein-Friesian calf was referred to the clinic with a hyperflexion of the fetlock and carpal joints of the right forelimb, associated with two surplus digits in the same leg, which was confirmed by radiographic examination. Surgery consisted of an osteotomy of the second metacarpal bone, a disarticulation in the antebrachiocarpal joint of the additional limb combined with an amputation of both odd digits. The follow-up of 12 months revealed a functionally sound heifer showing a good cosmetic outcome.

Computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) was initiated to reduce subjective bias on the motility assessment and to discriminate a series of motility patterns of boar semen. The objectives of this present study were to evaluate the motility pattern of frozen-thawed boar semen at 0 and 60 min after thawing using CASA. Forty one ejaculates from Landrace (n=14), Yorkshire (n=12) and Duroc (n=15) boars were cryopreserved and included in the experiment. The semen was thawed at 37°C for 30 sec. Avian influenza virus (AIV) subtype H5N1 is known as a highly pathogenic agent for man and various kinds of animals, especially avian species. Herein, AIV H5N1 was inactivated by binary ethylenimine (BEI), an aziridine compound, produced from 2-bromoethylamine hydrobromide. BEI was used at concentrations of 0.001 and 0.01 M for AIV inactivation. At the lower concentration (0.001 M), AIV could be inactivated within 24 hr. At the higher concentration (0.01 M), AIV could be inactivated within 6 hr. After inactivation, no hemagglutination activity had been found meaning that AIV had been completely inactivated.
