Effects Of Urea Or Urea Plus Molasses Supplementation To Silages With Different Sorghum Varieties Harvested At The Milk Stage On The Quality And In Vitro Dry Matter Digestibility Of Silages, Bi̇lal Keski̇n, İ. Hakki Yilmaz, M. Aki̇f Karsli, Hüseyi̇n Nursoy

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of 0.5% urea and 0.5% urea plus 4% molasses (on weight basis) addition to sorghum silages ensiled using 4 sorghum varieties (Grass II, Grazer, Gözde, and P-988) harvested at the milk stage. Plant materials were ensiled in 1-kg jars and the chemical composition, pH, organic acids, in vitro digestibility (IVDMD) and digestible dry matter yield (DDMY) of the silages were determined. Addition of urea and urea plus molasses to silages increased the crude protein ratio significantly (P < 0.01). However, the addition of urea plus molasses significantly decreased the neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber contents of the silages. Additives significantly increased the pH values of the silages. The addition of urea and urea plus molasses to silages generally did not affect acetic or propionic acid content; however, the butyric acid content of the urea and urea plus molasses groups was higher than that of the control groups. IVDMD of all sorghum varieties decreased with the addition of urea and urea plus molasses. Additives did not affect DDMY. In conclusion, the addition of 0.5% urea and 0.5% urea plus 4% molasses to sorghum silages, harvested at the milk stage, improved the CP content of the silages, but they had no positive effect on silage quality, IVDMD or DDMY.

Concentrations Of Some Minerals In Cows With Retained Placenta And Abortion, Yaşar Akar, Hami̇t Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between blood levels of Ca, Zn, Mg, K, and Na and the occurrence of retained placenta and abortion in cows. Serum samples from 34 cows were analyzed (18 with retained placenta, 10 without retained placenta (control), and 6 that had aborted). Ca and Zn levels in cows with retained placenta were significantly lower than those in the control group. The serum Zn levels of aborted cows were higher (P < 0.001) than those of cows with retained placenta. Cows in the control group and those with retained placenta were divided into subgroups based on age (3, 4-6, 7-9 years old), type of parturition (normal, dystocia), and sex of calves (male, female). The serum Ca concentration of 3-year-old cows with retained placenta was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of those 7-9 years old. It is concluded that lower serum Ca and Zn levels in cows may induce placenta retention.

Fractal Dimensions In Red Blood Cells, Alina Rapa, Servilia Oancea, Dorina Creanga

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

We studied the erythrocyte aggregability for different animals using fractal analysis. Red blood cell aggregation is an important component of whole blood viscosity and is the major cause of the non-Newtonian flow properties of blood. To understand the aggregation process many models have been proposed in the literature. Since aggregates formed by aggregation have a fractal structure, mathematical descriptions of their irregular structure can be obtained using fractal geometry. For this purpose, blood samples were prepared from cows, sheep, rabbits, roosters, horses and humans by diluting 1:200 and mixing for 3 min in adequate reactives. A Turk room, microscope system …

Efficacy Of Tribasic Copper Chloride (Tbcc) To Reduce The Harmful Effects Of Aflatoxin In Broilers, Sefa Çeli̇k, Zeynep Erdoğan, Suat Erdoğan, Ramazan Bal

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of copper as tribasic copper chloride on serum biochemical values and growth performance of broilers intoxicated with aflatoxins. Aflatoxins significantly decreased the level of albumin (P < 0.001), total protein (P < 0.001) and total cholesterol (P < 0.01), and increased the activities of alanine amino transferase, L-lactic dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase (P £ 0.001) in serum. These AF-induced changes were significantly improved by adding tribasic copper chloride to the diet. The decrease in serum copper concentration induced by aflatoxin was reversed by tribasic copper chloride. Serum zinc concentrations were not affected in tribasic copper chloride and tribasic copper chloride plus aflatoxin groups. Serum iron levels decreased in all the treatment groups significantly (P < 0.05). Aflatoxins caused significant decrease in the body weight gain and significant increase in the feed conversion ratio. Adverse effects of aflatoxins on feed conversion ratio were reversed by tribasic copper chloride supplementation to the diet. It is suggested that tribasic copper chloride might be used for reducing the adverse effects of aflatoxins in broiler production.
