The Great Lakes Entomologist

The Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera formosae (Brenske) (syn. M. castanea [Arrow]), is an annual white grub species that was unintentionally introduced from east Asia to North America in 1921 in New Jersey, and has since spread to at least 25 states and two Canadian provinces. Grub populations in the Great Lakes region have recently emerged as significant early-season pests of field crops, particularly field corn, grown in sandy soils. Asiatic garden beetle has also recently become established in other regions including Alabama. Prior research on this species was conducted mainly in the 1930s in horticultural and turfgrass systems of New …

Complementary Of Blacklight Trap And Flight Interception Trap In A Multi-Year Study Of Flying Coleoptera Near A Farm Pond In Southern Québec (Canada), Claire Levesque, Gilles-Yvon Levesque

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Abstract

A blacklight trap (LT) and a flight interception trap (FIT) were installed throughout the May-September period during four years (2014-2017), near a farm pond within an orchard at Compton, in southern Québec (Canada). We collected by LT 162,001 adults representing 560 beetle species and morphospecies belonging to 49 families, and using a FIT 10,159 individuals for 468 Coleoptera species belonging to 48 families. We observed a similarity of 9.8% between these two assemblages including 214 common species (26.3% of total of 814 caught taxa). We caught mainly nocturnal Carabidae, Hydrophilidae, Staphylinidae and Dryopidae in the LT, and primarily diurnal …

Seasonal Changes Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Functional Feeding Group Biomass Within Forest And Meadow Habitats Of A First-Order Michigan (Usa) Stream, David C. Houghton, Erin Flaherty, Danae Sollie, Ryan Lardner

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Little is known about seasonal changes in stream benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages. We determined the ash-free dry mass of macroinvertebrates within a forested and a meadow reach of Fairbanks Creek in northern Lower Michigan throughout all seasons of 2018 and 2019. The macroinvertebrate assemblage of the forested reach was dominated by invertebrates in the shredder functional feeding group (FFG), whereas the meadow reach was composed primarily of scrapers and filtering collectors. Regardless of reach, the biomass of all FFGs was low during the winter and early spring, peaked in May or June, and gradually declined throughout the summer and fall. General …

Insect Floral Visitors Of Red Maple And Tree-Of-Heaven At Potential Risk Of Neonicotinoid Residue Exposure From Spotted Lanternfly Control, Jonathan Elmquist, Kelli Hoover, David Biddinger

The Great Lakes Entomologist

To manage spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula (White)), an invasive planthopper recently introduced to the United States, governmental agencies, homeowners, and landscape professionals may treat its host plants with systemic neonicotinoid insecticides. Neonicotinoids can be harmful to non-target insect floral visitors collecting pollen or nectar. The insect floral visitors of red maple (Acer rubrum L.) or tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima (Mill.), which are two of the preferred hosts of L. delicatula in Pennsylvania, are often targeted with neonicotinoid applications for control of this pest. To identify the floral visitors of these tree species, we conducted observations and collections of …

Quick Sex-Determination Of The Asiatic Garden Beetle, Maladera Castanea (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Adrian J. Pekarcik, C. Scott Clem, Kyle J. Akred, Kelley J. Tilmon

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The orientation of the posterior abdominal sternite and pygidium allows for quick sex-determination of Maladera castanea (Arrow) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) adults with a dissecting microscope or hand lens. Maladera castanea (the Asiatic garden beetle) is an emerging pest of field crops and this information will help researchers to conduct studies more easily on its biology and ecology.

Observations Of The Mating Habits And Attack Pattern Of Trypodendron Retusum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) On Populus Grandidentata In Central Michigan, Richard Roeper, Daniel Dickerson, Paul Kurtzhals, Mark Bunce, Steven Brewer

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Trypodendron retusum Leconte attack pattern on Populus grandidentata Michx. (Big Tooth Aspen) was studied. Mating habits of males and females involved copulation at the entrance hole bored by the female. Attack (entrance )holes averaged 15.9 cm. apart and were found to be uniformly spaced on the bark surface. Attack density was greater on standing trees than wind-thrown trees. On standing trees attack density appeared to be a function of the height rather than the diameter of the tree.

Examining Resistance Of Asian, European, And North American Ash And Elm Species To The Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus Planipennis) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), Fredric Miller, Erin Mcmahan Nov 2022

Examining Resistance Of Asian, European, And North American Ash And Elm Species To The Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus Planipennis) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), Fredric Miller, Erin Mcmahan

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The emerald ash borer (EAB) (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), native to East Asia and discovered in Michigan in 2002, has been a devastating pest of North American ash trees (Fraxinus spp.). Along with native ecosystems in Eastern North America, a large percentage of urban canopies in many North American cities consist of ash trees, and many of these areas have lost or risk losing these valuable trees. As part of a multi-faceted management strategy, it is important to develop and plant cultivars of ash with resistance to this damaging insect. Given that EAB is not considered a …

Documenting Bombus Nevadensis In Minnesota, With Some Notes On Discerning It From B. Auricomus (Hymenoptera: Apidae), Zachary M. Portman, Chan Dolan

The Great Lakes Entomologist

In the face of well-documented declines in multiple bumblebee species, it is important to accurately identify species and properly delineate species ranges. Here, we document the range of Bombus auricomus (Robertson) and B. nevadensis Cresson in Minnesota, with particular reference to the unexpected discovery of B. nevadensis in St. Paul. We clarify the relative ranges of these two species and provide additional information on how to reliably identify them in Minnesota using color patterns and morphology, including differences in male genitalia. Our results support the consensus that B. auricomus and B. nevadensis are distinct species. Community science records were integral …

Western Bean Cutworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Feeding And Development On Industrial Hemp In The Laboratory And Field, Christina D. Difonzo

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The western bean cutworm (Striacosta albicosta (Smith)) is a key pest of corn (Zea mays L.) and dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). This observational study demonstrates that in addition to these hosts, western bean cutworm readily feeds on industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) and completes development on it under controlled laboratory conditions. In the laboratory, individual larvae were reared on a diet exclusively of hemp inflorescences; 57% survived to form prepupae and 15% emerged as moths. In the field, first instars were caged on hemp plants to investigate larval development in situ. After seven days, 82% …

Rediscovery Of Gnoriste Macra Johannsen In Wisconsin (Diptera: Mycetophilidae: Gnoristinae), Daniel K. Young

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Gnoriste macra Johannsen was described from Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin in 1912. The type locality is now a highly residential region a few miles north of the center of Milwaukee. Herein, collection events are reported for G. macra from Sauk County in southcentral Wisconsin. These new records, nearly a century after the only other literature record, indicate the species still thrives in Wisconsin though likely extirpated from the type locality. The specimens were recovered from unbaited Townes Malaise traps during mid- to late May, 2006 and 2020. Cranial anatomy and functional morphology of the head suggests G. macra may be a …

An Updated Checklist To The Non-Biting Midges (Chironomidae) Of Illinois, Daniel R. Swanson, Erika E. Bilger

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The Chironomidae, or non-biting midges, of Illinois have been untreated since the early 20th century, and the high level of taxonomic flux in the family necessitates an update, particularly for a group with importance as bio-indicators of freshwater ecosystem health. Herein, 181 species of Chironomidae in 76 genera are recorded from the state of Illinois. Each species entry is annotated with the first Illinoisan record of the species. Two genera, Brillia Kieffer, 1913 and Prodiamesa Kieffer, 1906, are recorded for the first time from Illinois, as are three species: Xenochironomus xenolabis (Kieffer in Thienemann and Kieffer, 1916) (Chironominae); Brillia …

Management Of Wireworms In Sweet Potatoes With Persistent Ny Entomopathogenic Nematodes, Elson Shields, Antonio Testa, Teresa Rusinek, Charles Bornt Apr 2022

Management Of Wireworms In Sweet Potatoes With Persistent Ny Entomopathogenic Nematodes, Elson Shields, Antonio Testa, Teresa Rusinek, Charles Bornt

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Wireworms are the larval stages of click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) and common polyphagous soil dwelling pests feeding on different plant parts including seeds, roots, stems, and tubers inhibiting plant growth eventually leading to plant death. With the ban of persistent synthetic insecticides such as lindane in 2009 due to negative effects on the environment, no effective control tactics (chemical or biological) are available for wireworms. Some entomopathogenic nematode species/strains have been reported to attack wireworms in the soil, causing death. Non-native EPN species have the advantage of being easily available commercial products for insect pest control. However, these strains do …
