Alfalfa has a wide range of adaptability as a forage plant, but the areas in which it will produce seed successfully are extremely limited. These sections are confined almost exclusively to the arid or semi-arid regions of the world. In all other areas it is primarily a question of seasonal fitness. The extreme localization may be further emphasized by the fact that within the highest producing counties there are appreciable areas of land not suitable for seed production.

Due to the cumulative effect of certain economic factors, the farmers of western Millard County, known as the Delta area, are in unfavorable economic conditions. Many of the farms are heavily mortgaged, taxes and interest in many cases are in arrears for several years, and in general, lack of prosperity in quite evident. Stockmen in the West have always had confidence in the adequacy of the native forage crop to provide pasturage for their livestock. Indeed, under normal climatic conditions this enormous natural resource has not failed the grazier, except where it has been called upon to meet unreasonable demands. The productivity of the range has declined sharply, however, wherever the requirements of plant growth have been disregarded for many years in succession. Considerable work has been done by plant breeders and investigators in the study of individual plant characters, but only a few have attempted to work out correlations between characters in crop plants. One reason for this seems to be, that many investigators have felt that correlation studies were of very little practical value. This attitude was due perhaps to the interpretation given correlation data, especially the nature of the casual agency or agencies to which the correlation was attributed. Due to considerable loss through root-rot of mother beets while in storage during the winter of 1918-1919 the Amalgamated Sugar Company asked advice in regard to planting beets which had decay lesions on them. Would the beets yield seed if planted? How much seed would these beets yield as compared with healthy beets? Would the seed produced be injured by having been grown on decayed beets? It was felt that an experiment carried out with the above questions in view would bring out many facts upon which to base conclusions in answering the questions of the Sugar Company.

The relation of climate to the growth and development of vegetation is of profound importance in both practical and experimental agriculture. It is extremely useful to know the cause of successful growth and establishment, or of partial success or failure, of various species in different plant associations and under widely contrasted climatic conditions.
