Proof-Of-Concept Of Environmental Dna Tools For Atlantic Sturgeon Management, Jameson Hinkle
Proof-Of-Concept Of Environmental Dna Tools For Atlantic Sturgeon Management, Jameson Hinkle
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, Mitchell) is an anadromous species that spawns in tidal freshwater rivers from Canada to Florida. Overfishing, river sedimentation and alteration of the river bottom have decreased Atlantic Sturgeon populations, and NOAA lists the species as endangered. Ecologists sometimes find it difficult to locate individuals of a species that is rare, endangered or invasive. The need for methods less invasive that can create more resolution of cryptic species presence is necessary. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a non-invasive means of detecting rare, endangered, or invasive species by isolating nuclear or mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from the …
Fungicide Resistance Genetics Of Apple Scab Fungus Venturia Inaequalis, Alexis Lt Reddel
Fungicide Resistance Genetics Of Apple Scab Fungus Venturia Inaequalis, Alexis Lt Reddel
Honors Theses and Capstones
Apple scab, caused by the ascomycete fungus Venturia inaequalis, is considered the most devastating disease on domestic apple crops. Apples are the most important cultivated crop in temperate regions and the United States produced about 4.6 million tons of apples in 2010. Traditional methods to control fungal plant diseases like apple scab are based on the use of chemical compounds that may produce serious negative effects, mainly related with environmental pollution and the development of fungicide resistance. Identifying genes and mechanisms of fungicide resistance in V. inaequalis is imperative to developing new and more effective defenses against the spread …
The Role Of Batf2 In Lps/Ifnγ Polarized Macrophages, Marie A. Gehman
The Role Of Batf2 In Lps/Ifnγ Polarized Macrophages, Marie A. Gehman
Theses and Dissertations--Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics
Transcription factors regulate distinct macrophage functions by regulating gene expression in response to micro-environmental cues. This functional plasticity is critical for regulating innate and adaptive immune responses during infection and during chronic disease processes including inflammatory diseases and cancer. Microarray analysis of macrophages polarized to a pro-inflammatory (M1) phenotype with LPS and IFNγ revealed that basic leucine zipper transcription factor ATF-like 2 (Batf2), a member of the AP1 transcription factors, is selectively upregulated in M1 macrophages compared to anti-inflammatory IL-4-polarized (M2) macrophages. The initial hypothesis was that Batf2 is a master regulator of gene expression that orchestrates M1 polarization. To …

The Genetic Ancestry Of African Americans, Latinos, And European Americans Across The United States, Katarzyna Bryc, Eric Y. Durand, J. Michael Macpherson, David Reich, Joanna Mountain
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Over the past 500 years, North America has been the site of ongoing mixing of Native Americans, European settlers, and Africans (brought largely by the trans-Atlantic slave trade), shaping the early history of what became the United States. We studied the genetic ancestry of 5,269 self-described African Americans, 8,663 Latinos, and 148,789 European Americans who are 23andMe customers and show that the legacy of these historical interactions is visible in the genetic ancestry of present-day Americans. We document pervasive mixed ancestry and asymmetrical male and female ancestry contributions in all groups studied. We show that regional ancestry differences reflect historical …

A Penalized Robust Semiparametric Approach For Gene-Environment Interactions, Shuangge Ma
A Penalized Robust Semiparametric Approach For Gene-Environment Interactions, Shuangge Ma
Shuangge Ma
In genetic and genomic studies, gene-environment (G*E) interactions have important implications. Some of the existing G$\times$E interaction methods are limited by analyzing a small number of G factors at a time, by assuming linear effects of E factors, by assuming no data contamination, and by adopting ineffective selection techniques. In this study, we propose a new approach for identifying important G*E interactions. It jointly models the effects of all E and G factors and their interactions. A partially linear varying coefficient model (PLVCM) is adopted to accommodate possible nonlinear effects of E factors. A rank-based loss function is used to …
