Monitoring Training Load In Indian Male Swimmers., Pralay Majumdar Dr., Sri Vidhya Jr.

The present study was taken up to monitor the training load and the impact of training load to the hormone concentrations such as testosterone, cortisol and T/C (Testosterone/Cortisol) ratio during the three phases of training viz preparatory phase, pre-competitive phase and competitive phase in Indian male swimmers. Blood samples were collected at the completion of each phase and the hormone concentrations were quantified. Our results reveal that the testosterone and T/C ratio significantly decreases whereas cortisol increases in the subsequent periodised cycle and concludes that the hormone concentration changes with the intensity and duration of exercise i.e. when the intensity …

Int J Exerc Sci 3(2) : 68-77, 2010. The purpose of this study was to investigate the asymmetry of force fluctuation in the leg muscles during isometric knee extension and flexion. Twenty healthy males (21±2 years) performed the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) in knee extensor and flexor. On the basis of MVC measurement, the subjects performed sustained isometric knee extension and flexion for 15s at levels corresponding to 10%, 20% and 30% MVC. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the E3 Fitness Grips (BioGrip, Inc., Rancho Cordova, CA) on running economy, as measured by oxygen uptake (VO2), and heart rate (HR) during submaximal treadmill running. Background: Optimal relationships between speed, agility, power and body mass are essential in American football. An increase in body mass, theoretically, reduces acceleration (Newton’s 2nd Law). The main aim of the present investigation was to verify if the aerobic capacity (AC) measured in tethered swimming corresponds to the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) and its correlation with 30 min and 400m free style swimming. Twenty-five swimmers were submitted to an incremental tethered swimming test (ITS) with an initial load of 20N and increments of 10N each 3min. Purposes were to (a) to examine the validity and precision of a hand-to-hand bioelectrical impedance analyzer (HBIA) and (b) to determine the effect of an acute sub-maximal aerobic exercise bout on HBIA percent body fat (%BF) measures. Forty-one young adults (21 women; 20 men) visited the laboratory for body composition assessment on two separate occasions. The power plate (PP) is designed to reduce training time while providing a muscle stimulus that leads to positive changes in muscle mass. This study investigated the effect that training on the PP has compared to a free-weight (FW) program, on upper body endurance, defined as the number of push-ups completed at one time prior to failure. Following IRB approval a pre-test was used to assess push-up endurance in PP and FW cohorts. Determination Of Blood Lactate Concentration: Reliability And Validity Of A Lactate Oxidase-Based Method, Rachel White*, Daniel Yaeger*, Stasinos Stavrianeas‡

The measurement of blood lactate has long been used as marker of exercise intensity and training status. We compared a commercially available lactate oxidase spectrophotometric method (LO) to determine blood lactate levels to two previously validated methods, the lactate dehydrogenase spectrophotometric method (LDH), and the YSI 1500L Sport lactate analyzer (YSI). First we established a series of calibration curves over physiological range of lactate values (1-15 mM∙l-1 for the spectrophotometric assays and 1-30 mM∙l-1 for the YSI) with high correlations (0.986 < r < 0.999). Aerobically trained participants (n = 11) performed repeated exercise bouts of varying intensities on a cycle ergometer. Capillary blood samples (n = 189) were collected from the earlobe and the blood lactate concentration was determined using each of the three methods. An ANOVA (alpha=0.05) revealed no differences in blood lactate concentrations between the three methods. The three experimental protocols yielded similarly-shaped lactate curves, although the actual values for the LDH method was somewhat lower than the LO and the YSI at every intensity level. Bland-Altman plots revealed a slight bias towards lower lactate values with the LDH method, perhaps indicative of a more conservative measure of blood lactate. We conclude that the LO method is a reliable and valid method to determine blood lactate concentrations spectrophotometrically. All three methods can provide useful within-subject lactate curves, although we caution against interchangeable use of the three methods.

The Actiheart monitor uniquely allows simultaneous measurement of heart rate and movement counts. The purpose of this study was to establish validity evidence for the Actiheart monitor under laboratory and free-living conditions. A total of 34 college students (17 males and 17 females, age = 21.8 ± 3.6 years) participated in the study. In the laboratory environment, the participants completed three, 5 min bouts of treadmill walking and/or running at speeds of 3.2, 6.4, and 9.6 km/h. The use of regression equations to predict oxygen uptake in relation to speed, grade, power output, and anthropometric characteristics is common in cardiac rehabilitation and athlete fitness testing. This study examined the effects of cycling posture on subsequent running performance similar to the transition phase of a triathlon. Experienced, non-elite triathletes completed two trials of a cycle-run transition. Firefighters and police have different physical job requirements and selection processes. Firefighters have on-duty exercise time and police do not. This could affect body composition and strength. The purpose of this investigation was to compare body composition and bench press strength between firefighters and police officers in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg departments. The principle of specificity would indicate that being aerobically trained would not necessarily enhance performance in events relying principally on oxygen-independent metabolic pathways (i.e. “anaerobic” exercise). Body fatness may be associated with aerobic and anaerobic performance. VO2 Peak was determined with a graded cycle ergometry and, in a separate session 4 consecutive Wingate power tests (3 min recovery) in 31 males. Seventeen men (n=9) and women (n=8) who were active recreationally participated in this investigation.
