G94-1208 Managing The Alfalfa Weevil, Stephen D. Danielson, Thomas E. Hunt, Keith J. Jarvi Jan 1994

G94-1208 Managing The Alfalfa Weevil, Stephen D. Danielson, Thomas E. Hunt, Keith J. Jarvi

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The identification and life cycle of the alfalfa weevil are discussed along with scouting techniques, economic thresholds, and other integrated pest management tactics.

The alfalfa weevil is the primary insect pest of alfalfa in Nebraska. Management is essential to reduce crop losses, particularly during years when weevil infestation is high. Because there also are years when weevil damage is economically unimportant, it is necessary for growers to become familiar with sampling procedures, management guidelines, and control recommendations so control techniques are not used unnecessarily.

G94-1210 Borers Of Shade Trees And Ornamental Plants, Frederick P. Baxendale, David L. Keith, J. Ackland Jones

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication describes the important shade tree and ornamental borers in Nebraska and discusses their management.

Nearly all shade trees are subject to borer attack. If damage is severe, young trees are likely to decline or die.

G94-1220 Controlling Ticks, John B. Campbell, Gustave D. Thomas Jan 1994

G94-1220 Controlling Ticks, John B. Campbell, Gustave D. Thomas

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Identification and control of ticks common to Nebraska.

Ticks are members of the same phylum (Arthropoda) of the animal kingdom as insects, but are in a different class (Arachnida). The main difference is the body of a tick is composed of only two sections while insect bodies have three sections.

There are over 800 species of ticks, 100 of which are important to man and animals because of economic losses or disease transmission. Fortunately in the United States, only about 12 species are economically important because they transmit disease organisms (viral, bacterial, protozoan, and rickettsial) or cause economic losses to …

Ec94-738 Using Agricultural Anhydrous Ammonia Safely, Robert D. Grisso, David Morgan, Rollin D. Schnieder Jan 1994

Ec94-738 Using Agricultural Anhydrous Ammonia Safely, Robert D. Grisso, David Morgan, Rollin D. Schnieder

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Anhydrous ammonia is one of the most efficient and widely used sources of nitrogen for row-crop production. Because it is a cheap source of nitrogen and readily available, large quantities of anhydrous ammonia are used as nitrogen fertilizer.

Anhydrous ammonia has disadvantages, especially in handling. It must be stored and handled under high pressure, which requires specially designed and well-maintained equipment. In addition, to ensure operator safety, workers must be trained to handle this product and to follow strict work procedures.

I made the following observations in south central Burke County, northwestern North Dakota.

Two-Dimensional Transport Model For Variably Saturated Porous Meda With Major Ion Chemistry, Jiří Šimůnek, Donald L. Suarez Jan 1994

Two-Dimensional Transport Model For Variably Saturated Porous Meda With Major Ion Chemistry, Jiří Šimůnek, Donald L. Suarez

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We present the development and demonstrate the use of the two-dimensional finite element code UNSATCHEM-2D for modeling major ion equilibrium and kinetic nonequilibrium chemistry in variably saturated porous media. The model is intended for prediction of major ion chemistry and water and solute fluxes for soils under transient conditions. Since the solution chemistry in the unsaturated zone is significantly influenced by variations in water content, temperature, and CO2 concentrations in the soil gas, all these variables are also calculated by the model. The major variables of the chemical system are Ca, Mg, Na, K, SO4, Cl, NO …

Characteristics Of Modified Leghemoglobins Lsolated From Soybean (Glycine Max Merr.) Root Nodules, Hyung-Kyun Jun, Gautam Sarath, Jose F. Moran, Manuel Becana, Robert V. Klucas, Fred W. Wagner

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Hemoprotein derivatives of an abundant soybean (Glycine max Merr.) root nodule leghemoglobin, Lba, were studied for their modified spectral characteristics and physical properties. Three modified hemoprotein derivatives of Lba (Lbam1, Lbam2, and Lbam3) were purified by preparative isoelectric focusing. The ferric forms of these pigments were green and exhibited anomalous spedra in the visible region as compared to the Lba3+ forms. These modified pigments showed a hypochromic shift of 10 nm for the charge transfer absorption maximum; however, differences were not apparent in the Sdret region. Upon binding with nicotinate, the α …

Identification And Characterization Of The Ecdysteroid Udpglucosyltransferase Gene Of The Lymantria Dispar Multinucleocapsid Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus, Christopher I. Riegel, Carita Lanner-Herrera, James M. Slavicek Jan 1994

Identification And Characterization Of The Ecdysteroid Udpglucosyltransferase Gene Of The Lymantria Dispar Multinucleocapsid Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus, Christopher I. Riegel, Carita Lanner-Herrera, James M. Slavicek

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

We have located, cloned, sequenced and characterized the ecdysteroid UDP-glucosyltransferase gene (egt) gene from the baculovirus Lymantria dispar multinucleocapsid nuclear polyhedrosis virus,(LdMNPV), which is specific for the gypsy moth (L. dispar). The egt gene from the related baculovirus Autographa californica multinucleocapsid nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) disrupts the hormonal balance of the host larva by galactosylating ecdysone, which prevents moulting. The location of the LdMNPV egt gene, determined by hybridization analysis using a cloned coding segment of the AcMNPV egt gene, was mapped to between 79.1 and 80.2 map units on the viral genome. This region contains an open …

Identification And Characterization Of A Protein Kinase Gene In The Lymantria Dispar Multinucleocapsid Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus, David S. Bischoff, James M. Slavicek Jan 1994

Identification And Characterization Of A Protein Kinase Gene In The Lymantria Dispar Multinucleocapsid Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus, David S. Bischoff, James M. Slavicek

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

The Lymantria dispar multinucleocapsid nuclear polyhedrosis virus (LdMNPV) gene encoding vPK has been cloned and sequenced. LdMNPV vPK shows a 24% amino acid identity to the catalytic domains of the eucaryotic protein kinases nPKC from rabbits, HSPKCE from humans, APLPKCB from Aplysia californica, and dPKC98F from Drosophila melanogaster, and homology to several other protein kinases from yeasts, mice, and bovines. The homology suggests that vPK is a serine/threonine protein kinase as defined by Hanks et al. (S. K. Hanks, A. M. Quinn, and T. Hunter, Science 241:42-52, 1988). Temporal expression studies indicate that vPK is expressed throughout the …

Heritability Estimates Of Turf-Type Characteristics In Buffalograss, S.J. Browning, Terrance P. Riordan, Rodger K. Johnson, Julie Johnson-Cicalese Jan 1994

Heritability Estimates Of Turf-Type Characteristics In Buffalograss, S.J. Browning, Terrance P. Riordan, Rodger K. Johnson, Julie Johnson-Cicalese

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Buffalograss [Buchloë dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm] is a drought-resistant, dioecious species, native to the Central Great Plains, which shows excellent potential as a low maintenance turfgrass. Although buffalograss can be propagated vegetatively, there is a need for seeded turf-type cultivars. To assist in developing seeded cultivars, heritabilities of turf characteristics were estimated. Heritabilities from maternal half-sib analyses ranged from h2 = 0.04 ± 0.03 for the 1988 uniformity rating to h2 = 0.62 ± 0.26 for the 1989 spring color rating. Heritability estimates calculated from offspring-parent regression were also variable and generally lower than maternal half-sib analysis. The …

'Chase' Pinto Dry Bean, Dermot P. Coyne, D.S. Nuland, Dale T. Lindgren, James R. Steadman Jan 1994

'Chase' Pinto Dry Bean, Dermot P. Coyne, D.S. Nuland, Dale T. Lindgren, James R. Steadman

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The release of ‘Chase’ fulfills a need in southwestern Nebraska for a Pinto dry bean cultivar (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with resistance to rust [Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.) Unger] and several bacterial diseases. Rust, common bacterial blight [Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli (Smith) Dye], and bacterial brown spot (Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae van Hall) diseases have recently reduced bean yields and seed quality of Pinto dry beans in that region and northeastern Colorado. ‘Chase’ is the first Pinto cultivar that combines resistance to rust(races of rust prevalent in recent years in Nebraska and Colorado), bacterial brown spot, halo blight …

Cdna Sequence For The Ribulose 1,5 Bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase Complex Protein A Protein That Accumulates In Soybean Leaves In Response To Fruit Removal, Paul E. Staswick, Steven J. Crafts-Brandner Jan 1994

Cdna Sequence For The Ribulose 1,5 Bisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase Complex Protein A Protein That Accumulates In Soybean Leaves In Response To Fruit Removal, Paul E. Staswick, Steven J. Crafts-Brandner

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Soybean (Glycine max L.) transiently accumulates two abundant vegetative storage proteins, VSP A and VSP B, in vacuoles of above-ground vegetative tissues (Wittenbach, 1983; Staswick, 1990). As older leaves and stems become a source of exported metabolites for developing sinks, the VSPs are preferentially degraded and the resulting metabolites are presumably mobilized in the xylem and phloem stream. A striking feature of these proteins is that VSP gene expression is dramatically increased in mature leaves following the remova1 of reproductive sinks (seed pods) and the amount of these proteins increases accordingly (for review, see Staswick, 1994). Other changes …

Purification Of The Major Soybean Leaf Acid Phosphatase That 1s Increased By Seed-Pod Removal, Paul E. Staswick, Chuck Papa, Jing-Feng Huang, Yoon Rhee Jan 1994

Purification Of The Major Soybean Leaf Acid Phosphatase That 1s Increased By Seed-Pod Removal, Paul E. Staswick, Chuck Papa, Jing-Feng Huang, Yoon Rhee

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Fruit removal for 5 weeks after flowering increased acid phosphatase activity 10-fold in soybean (Glycine max 1. Merr. vai Hobbit) leaves compared with normal seed-pod-bearing plants. The major acid phosphatase activity in leaves was purified over 2700-fold, yielding a single polypeptide of 51 kD with a specific activity of 1353 units/mg protein using p-nitrophenylphosphate as the substrate. lsoelectric focusing demonstrated that the purified protein co-migrated with a majority of the activity that increased in leaves following seed-pod removal. lmmunoblot analysis demonstrated that at least part of the increased activity was dueto an increased abundance of the phosphatase protein. In situ …

Rotation And Nitrogen Fertilization Effects On Changes In Soil Carbon And Nitrogen, Gary E. Varvel Jan 1994

Rotation And Nitrogen Fertilization Effects On Changes In Soil Carbon And Nitrogen, Gary E. Varvel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Long-term effects of cropping systems on soil properties, such as organic soil C and N levels, is necessary so more accurate projections can be made regarding the sequester and emission of CO2 by agricultural soils. This information can then be used to predict the effects of cropping systems on both soil degradation, maintenance, or improvement and global climate changes. My objective was to evaluate the effects of crop rotation and N fertilizer management on changes in total soil C and N concentrations that have occurred during an 8-yr period in a long-term study in the Western Corn Belt. Seven …

Liight Reflectance Compared With Other Nitrogen Stress Measurements In Corn Leaves, Tracy M. Blackmer, James S. Schepers, Gary E. Varvel Jan 1994

Liight Reflectance Compared With Other Nitrogen Stress Measurements In Corn Leaves, Tracy M. Blackmer, James S. Schepers, Gary E. Varvel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

New tools that can rapidly quantify the N status of corn could be valuable in N fertilizer management practices. This study was conducted to compare light reflectance from corn leaves with other parameters used to detect N deficiencies. Light reflectance (400-700 nm) as measured from corn leaves in the laboratory with a Hunter tristimulus colorimeter was compared with Minolta SPAD 502 chlorophyll meter readings (light transmittance at 650 and 940 nm), leaf N concentrations, and specific leaf N (h' content per unit area). Measurements were made on individual ear leaves collected from an irrigated corn N response trial with four …

1994 Beef Cattle Report, Darrell W. Nelson Jan 1994

1994 Beef Cattle Report, Darrell W. Nelson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Two grazing trials were conducted to determine i/protein or energy was first limiting in the spring-and fall-born nursing calf grazing native sandhills range. Spring-born calves supplemented with escape protein gained more rapidly than calves supplemented with energy or nonsupplemented controls. Fall-born calves supplemented with escape protein gained more rapidly than those supplemented with rumen degradable protein or energy and nonsupplemented controls early in the trial, but gained at a similar rate to the energy controls by the end of the trial. Milk intake was similar across treatments for both trials. Escape protein is more limiting in the young nursing calf …

Nectar-Seeking Visits By Butterflies In A Tallgrass Prairie Remnant In Eastern Nebraska, Tanya Bray Jan 1994

Nectar-Seeking Visits By Butterflies In A Tallgrass Prairie Remnant In Eastern Nebraska, Tanya Bray

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Stolley Prairie, a tallgrass virgin prairie remnant in eastern Nebraska, was visited 20 times between May 25 and August 14, 1988. Fifty-two species of forbs were observed in bloom during this period. Twenty-seven species of butterflies were observed and 21 species made 262 nectar-seeking visits to 21 plant species. While numbers of forbs in bloom did not strongly correlate with numbers of butterflies present, peaks of butterfly occurrence appeared to follow peaks of blossom abundance. The number of plant species utilized by a species of butterfly ranged from one to nine. Plants with an abundance of nectar such as common …

Genetic Variation And Differentiation Of North American Waterfowl (Anatidae), David W. Oates, Joann D. Principato Jan 1994

Genetic Variation And Differentiation Of North American Waterfowl (Anatidae), David W. Oates, Joann D. Principato

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

This study examines the genetic variation in 45 taxa of all tribes and most species of North American waterfowl (Anatidae) with a starch-gel electrophoretic survey of protein variation at 25 loci. Relationships were estimated using the resulting data from the patterns of allozyme variation and summarized in both phenetic and cladistic branching diagrams. The branching diagrams (phylogenetic trees) are employed to help compare and contrast phylogenetic relationships relative to other hypothesis. Although results of this study generally concur with classic phylogenetic trees and the taxonomic designations of the current American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) Check-list, exceptions are noted. …

The Status Of Nebraska Fishes In The Missouri River, 3. Channel Catfish (Ictaluridae: Ictalurus Punctatus), Larry W. Hesse Jan 1994

The Status Of Nebraska Fishes In The Missouri River, 3. Channel Catfish (Ictaluridae: Ictalurus Punctatus), Larry W. Hesse

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The average size of Missouri River channel catfish has declined. The percentage 10 years old or older is 4.8% compared with an unexploited population in which 32% are 10 years and older. From 1944 through 1988 commercial harvest declined as much as 64%. Total mortality was 37% at age 4 and 79% at age 5. The increased mortality occurred as they reached 13 inches and became fully recruited to the commercial fishery. Harvest statistics are not wholly reliable because reports are not verifiable and commercial fishers do not return fish tags. Harvest exceeded a reasonable limit for maximum sustained yield. …

A Survey And Analysis Of The Unionid Mollusks Of The Elkhorn River Basin, Nebraska, Ellet Hoke Jan 1994

A Survey And Analysis Of The Unionid Mollusks Of The Elkhorn River Basin, Nebraska, Ellet Hoke

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Surveys in the Elkhorn River Basin between 1972 and 1994 documented a unionid fauna of 28 taxa. Two additional taxa were documented by museum records, bringing the total to 30 confirmed for the region. In recent collections only eleven species were found as live specimens or fresh shells, suggesting the possible loss of as much as 63% of the documented fauna of the Basin. Biological diversity was once greatest in the eastern portion of the Basin, reflecting the greater variety of habitats in this region. At present, the greatest diversity appears to be found in the western portion. This reversal …
