Control Of Lice On Poultry, B R. Vale
Control Of Lice On Poultry, B R. Vale
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
DURING February and March of 1965 some particularly heavy body lice infestations were found on fowls in both deep litter and cage units in Western Australia.
In some instances comparatively new laying cage units were involved.
The most seriously affected flocks showed marked unthriftiness and depressed egg production.
Fatique In Caged Layers, P Smetana
Fatique In Caged Layers, P Smetana
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Pullets found immobilised on the floors of their laying cages may only be suffering from the easily-treated "cage layer fatigue" and should be checked for this before being disposed of as affected with the incurable fowl paralysis.

Control Of Lice On Pigs, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Control Of Lice On Pigs, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
LICE are responsible for serious losses in the pig industry, as apart from the reduced growth rates and loss of condition resulting from the constant irritation, the lice are carriers of disease.
Lice And Keds In Sheep, C R. Toop
Lice And Keds In Sheep, C R. Toop
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
BODY LICE and the so called ticks or keds are the most serious of the external parasites which infest sheep in Western Australia.
Unless they are controlled by systematic dipping, these pests can cause considerable financial loss to flock owners.

Index Catalogue To Russian, Central And Eastern European, And Chinese Literature In Medical Entomology, Volume 1: Diptera, George Anastes
United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications
Over the past several years a large number of references from the USSR, Eastern Europe, and China have been collected dealing with arthropods of medical importance. These references were coded on keysort cards which made it possible to index as many as fifteen subject areas on one card. The usefulness of this indexing system was evident by the number of medical entomologists who used it in searching for references in their specialty. In response to requests from workers in the United States and other countries who did not have ready access to the index. it was decided to publish these …

The Effect Of Infection With Polyoma Virus On The Protein, Rna, And Dna Of Mouse Embryo Cell Cultures, Lawrence E. Mcconnehey
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In four separate experiments mouse embryo cell monolayers infected with polyoma virus and uninfected control mouse embryo cells were maintained in Eagle’s Minimum Essential Medium for periods of time ranging from 0 to 168 hours. The cell layers were removed from the glass by trypsinization. Samples of the cells were counted in a Coulter Counter and the remainder of the cells frozen after centrifugation, in a button. Later, the buttons were thawed and protein, RNA, and DNA analyses were performed on each sample. The micrograms per million cells of protein. RNA, and DNA were determined for each sample and plotted …

Control Of Lice On Cattle, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE external parasites, biting and sucking lice (particularly of calves) are the cause of much unthriftiness.
Insecticides For External Parasites Of Sheep And Cattle, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Insecticides For External Parasites Of Sheep And Cattle, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
CHLORINATED hydrocarbon insecticides for the control of external parasites of sheep and cattle are no longer registered under the Veterinary Medicines Act.
The preparations are D.D.T., B.H.C.. dieldrin, aldrin and toxaphene.
Sarcoptic Mange Of Pigs, H D. Seddon, F. C. Wilkinson
Sarcoptic Mange Of Pigs, H D. Seddon, F. C. Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THIS parasitic disease appears to be much more common than is usually recognised; for, while severe cases with chronic skin lesions are readily seen, light infestations, especially on coloured pigs often go unnoticed.
When it is realised that even lightly infested pigs require twice as much feed to make one pound gain in live weight as do uninfested pigs, then early recognition and treatment of the disease becomes an obvious economical necessity.
Plants And Asthma, Robert Dunlop Royce
Plants And Asthma, Robert Dunlop Royce
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ASTHMA is defined in the dictionary as being a disease characterised by recurring attacks of difficulty in breathing, and the causes are stated to include the inhalation of dust, or the odour of plants, flowers or animals.
Hay fever is a similar condition and this too, is caused by plants, usually at the time of flowering, when large quantities of pollen are produced.

Brucellosis Can Cause Contagious Abortion In Cattle And Undulant Fever In Man, F C. Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
WHEN the cow, shown in the accompanying photograph, was purchased it had a small fluid-filled lump on the left knee.
The swelling did not appear to be painful but gradually increased in size until it assumed the proportions shown in the picture.
It was a typical case of "big-knee," one of the less common manifestations of Brucellosis—the disease commonly known as contagious abortion—and a blood test of the animal confirmed the diagnosis.
Pullorum-Tested Poultry Flocks : 1960, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Pullorum-Tested Poultry Flocks : 1960, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
EARLY in 1955, an amendment to the Stock Diseases Act made blood-testing compulsory for all commercial breeding and hatchery flocks of poultry, and it was required that the incidence of infection, as determined by the last test prior to the commencement of hatching, must be less than two per cent.
Ticks Affecting Animals In Australia, J Shilkin
Ticks Affecting Animals In Australia, J Shilkin
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
WHILE there are many external parasites affecting animals in Australia, information in regard to their geographical distribution and incidence is far from complete.
However, there is little doubt that the ticks, and in particular, the cattle tick, are the most important of these parasites in Australia.
We are fortunate that many species are not present in this country, as some of them are carriers of serious diseases of both man and animals.

The External Morphology Of The First Zoeal Stages Of Cancer Magister (Dana), Cancer Antennarius (Stimpson), And Cancer Anthonyi (Rathbun), Robert Dotson Mir
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The literature dealing with the larva of Pacific Coast brachyuran crabs is slight. The prominent papers, those of Aikawa (1927, 1928, 1929, 1933, 1937), deal with a variety of genera and offer information useful in determin- ing family relationships. A single paper by Hart (1935) also deal with a number of brachyuran larvae found in the Pacific Ocean. None of these papers, however, identifies to species any member of the genus Cancer, although one member, C. magister (Dana) is of considerable economic importance on the pacific coast of North America. In the fall of 1958 an investigation was under taken …

Natural History Of Thelazia Californiensis Price, 1930 (Nematoda: Thelaziidae), A Mammalian Eye Worm, Warren E. Parmelee
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Various factors—embryology, host associations, and seasonal changes In eye worn populations—tending to promote the propagation of T. califomlensls were studied.
The early embryology closely parallels that of other nematode species.
The mature embryos remain alive in saline at 35°C as long as 5 days. Dead embryos can be distinguished from living ones by virtue of the rapid staining by methylene blue by the former. Parturient female thelazias release embryos into saline, and embryos are found regularly in tear secretions of infected laboratory rabbits.
Ovic embryos possess an enveloping egg membrane containing chitin. On this account, this eye worm species is …

Natural And Experimental Infections Of Thelazia Californiensis Price (1930, Nematoda: Thelaziidae) With Descriptions Of The Adult And Larval Parasites, Howard S. Burnett
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this work was to determine the extent and effects of infestation of the eye worm of mammals, Thelazia californiensis, and to elucidate through experimentation or observation the mode of transmission.
A survey of literature revealed that thelaziasie (infestation by Thelazia species) may cause serious pathological changes in the eye and its adnexa, sometimes resulting in blindness. It was found that reports of thelaziasis in the United States were (with two exceptions) of cases in California. It was further found that T. californiensis has been reported in a wider variety of host than has any of other …
